ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS Baptisms: On any available Sunday during the 11:00 AM (Italian), 9:30 AM or 12:30 PM (English) & 7:00 PM (Portuguese) Masses. Please, contact the rectory at least one month prior to desired date. Confessions: Saturdays 4:00 to 4:45 PM, or during the week by appointment. Marriages: Please contact the rectory at least six months prior to desired wedding date. Sacrament of the Sick: If you are hospitalized or unable to come to Church for health reasons and would like to be visited by a priest for Confession, Communion, or Anointing of the Sick, please call the rectory. Religious Education Program (CCD): For children 1 st to 8 th grades who are not attending Catholic School. Classes are held on Sundays from September to May at 11:30 AM, with attendance to the 12:30 PM Family Mass. Confirmation: Teens will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on 8 th grade. They will attend classes at 11:30 AM from September to December; and from January to April classes will start at 11:00 AM in the church hall, with attendance to the 12:30 PM Family Mass. Before we begin the new appeal, let s look at how we did in 2018: Parish Goal for 2018: $11, Total Given in 2018: $ 8, (71.99% of our goal) Parish Goal for 2019: $12, Please come prepared to make a generous pledge as you can. May God bless your open heart. BLESSED SACRAMENT ADORATION will be this first Friday, February 1 from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM. Parishioners are encouraged to schedule a moment to visit and adore Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. A moment that may last 15 or 20 minutes will change your entire day. HOLY ROSARY SOCIETY will meet this Tuesday, January 29 at 7:30 PM in the Blessed Mother s room. FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT scheduled for next Saturday has been canceled. CONFIRMATION Our 8 th grade teenagers will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, April 27 at the 5:00 PM Vigil Mass by Bishop John W. Flesey. Save the date: DEACON THOMAS WILL BE ORDAINED A PRIEST on Saturday, June 22 at the 5:00 PM Vigil Mass, followed by reception in church hall. All are invited. VALENTINE S DINNER DANCE has been canceled due to ongoing construction in church hall. All tickets sold will be reimbursed accordingly. We apologize for the inconvenience. Holy Hour for Vocations Holy hours of Adoration are the Roman Catholic devotional tradition of spending an hour in Eucharistic Adoration in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. We focus our prayer to Jesus Christ on peace, life, vocations, and other topics that are at the heart of the life of the Church and the world. Every week on Thursday from 6:15 to 7:15 PM in church (Except on eve of first Fridays) Do you shop for groceries at SHOPRITE? Our church sells Shoprite Cards ($50 and $20 dollars) When you use these cards to pay for your groceries, instead of cash, St. Nicholas gets 5% of what you spend at no cost to you It s a great way to support our parish! Reservations deadline is April rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today s Gospel, it will be a year acceptable to the Lord. And Jesus surely didn t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the arrival of God s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, Today is holy... do not be sad, and do not weep. The year acceptable to the Lord is this year. The day that is holy is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God s word. Copyright J. The Legion of Mary meets every Tuesday at 9:00 AM in the Blessed Mother s room in the rectory. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Saturday s feast of the Presentation is a day for the blessing of candles. Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. Perpetual Candles We have candles available at the St. Anthony s candle stand for those parishioners who are interested on lighting a PERPETUAL CANDLE in memory of their beloved ones.
