Sometimes, when a task or mission is set upon our shoulders, we know we must meet our responsibilities and we are ready. These are heady and invigorating times. The first reading and the Gospel proclamation today are intimate glimpses of a commencement, an inauguration of a challenging future. In both readings, a sense of gravity prevails. The first reading is from the mysterious Servant Songs from the book of Isaiah. The person is steadfast and brave. His courage and bravery are not located in his stout heart, but in God. We are reminded, The Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear (Isaiah 50:4), so the servant understands the mission. And twice, The Lord GOD is my help (50:7, 9), so that the servant can endure the coming struggle. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 6 TO: Priests and Deacons FROM: Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Reno DATE: September 3, 2015 The Holy Father has recently announced a Year of Mercy for the church. Along with the announcement, Pope Francis has granted priests throughout the world the faculty, or ability, to forgive the sin of abortion. The lack of explanation of this special ability granted by the Holy Father and an often misinformed media has been a source of confusion. Some women have expressed their concern, wondering if their parish priest had the ability to forgive them in the past. By this brief statement, I hope to bring some clarity and peace. Firstly, please rest assured if you have confessed the sin of abortion and the priest granted you forgiveness that he had the ability to do so granted to him by his bishop. Secondly, here in the Diocese of Reno, the bishop has always granted this same ability to his priests. While this is true for most of the bishops of the United States, it is not true throughout the world. So, basically, the Holy Father is doing for the whole world what the bishop of Reno has always done for the Diocese of Reno. He has made it easier than ever for those who wish to confess the sin of abortion to receive the forgiveness they seek without delay. Welcome Pope Francis to the U.S. ACTIONN ~ Acting in Community Together in Organizing Northern Nevada ~ is holding a Public Assembly on Tuesday, September 22, from 7 to 8:15 pm at Little Flower Catholic Church, 875 East Plumb Lane, Reno, to welcome Pope Francis to the U.S. This local multi-media presentation will feature messages from Pope Francis calling for people to act for social justice especially as it impacts economics, racial justice and immigration reform. Testimonies from local people who are experiencing the pain of economic, racial and immigration injustice will be shared. This free event in both English and Spanish is open to people of all faiths. Pre-registration is requested to Aria@actionn.org or Arrival of 6:30 is suggested to allow time to park, check in and find a seat as the program will begin promptly at 7pm. Free parking will be available at Little Flower Church and School, 875 East Plumb Lane, Reno (at the corner of Kietzke Ln.) Pope Francis has a vision of the church as an institution that acts for, and on behalf of the dispossessed, a vision that owes a lot to St. Francis of Assisi, the 13 th century Italian who renounced his inheritance to tend to the poor. In his Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis offers this wisdom and call to action, It is not the task of the Pope to offer a detailed and complete analysis of contemporary reality, but I do exhort all the communities to an ever watchful scrutiny of the signs of the time. This is in fact a grave responsibility, since certain present realities, unless effectively dealt with, are capable of setting off processes of dehumanization which would be hard to reverse. Pope Francis is expected to visit New York to address the United Nations, Washington D.C to meet with President Obama and Congress and Philadelphia to address the World Congress of Families the following week. ACTIONN is composed of 42 faith communities representing over 35,000 families in Northern Nevada and is working on creating social justice in Nevada through the engagement of everyday people in creating solutions to their pain. For more information, the public is invited to visit: or to follow ACTIONN on Facebook.
