The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15 Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken;

2 struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And he said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well." Please send any announcements to her at Articles should be submitted in text (*.txt) or Microsoft Word (*.docx) formats and pictures in JPEG (*.jpg *.jpeg *.jpe) format for inclusion in the bulletin. The deadline for submissions is on Friday 5:00 PM anything submitted after that time will not be included in the bulletin for the upcoming Sunday. Bible Study Bible Study will resume in January. 9 STEWARDSHIP CORNER Stewardship 2019 WHY IS THE CHURCH ALWAYS ASKING FOR MONEY? Most parish priests will say that this is what they like least about their calling. No priests wants to continue to ask people to give to the needs of the parish, but the asking must continue because the daily operation of the parish requires financial assistance for everything from the utilities, to salaries, to outreach and to mortgage payments. In addition, it is a duty of the Church to ask for offerings, not only for the work of the parish but also for the work that is done by charitable organizations in the community. The Church sees so much suffering and so many needs and had a responsibility to address that suffering and those needs. On a number of occasions, St. Paul urges the early Church to give funds to help those in need. He even had very specific instructions in taking the collection for Jerusalem in his second letter to the Corinthians. Today the focus of the Church is much more on stewardship than on talking about money. Christian Stewardship is based on the individual s need to give thanks, not on the Church s need to receive. It is based on the premise that all that we have and all that we are comes from God and as a way to thank God for all His blessings, we return to Him a portion of the Time, Talent and Treasure allowed to us. We must desire to need to give to become good Christian Stewards. As your understanding of Christian Stewardship grows you will begin to discover this need to give and move away from the feeling that you are just giving to the needs of our Church. And when that happens, the need for the Church to ask for funds will diminish, not because the expenses cease, but because the gifts are given without asking. Have you made your commitment to the church by making your pledge for 2018? We need everyone to help support the Church of St. Nicholas. As we continue to grow in our ministries of the parish we need your support. Part of Stewardship is not only the financial commitment, but we are called upon to help the church in her mission to evangelize and bring people to Christ and His Church? 11 What God Has Done in Your Life I actually have countless stories of what God has done in my life, but the one I want to share happened only a few weeks ago My grandfather - my papou - was a big part of my life; he was my role model. Last February, at the age of 95, he passed away. Although I was devastated, I was able to focus on all of the fond memories I had of him, and I felt his presence all around me - in the pictures around my house, in the countless candies and pens he gave me that I found in the bottom of my purse, in the cross shining from the dome of Sts. Constantine and Helen (the church he designed and built), in the icons and crosses hanging on my walls, and in the pages of his memoir, which I helped him write about 8 years before his death. I also found him in places I did not expect - in the diploma from Columbia University at the dentist s office a few days after his death (he had been a professor at Columbia for many years), on a license plate bearing the numbers of his birthday, in the dahlia (his favorite flower) in the bouquet I held at my sister s wedding, and many other places. Most recently, he came to me in a dream. I was sitting in the pews of Sts. Constantine and Helen for a memorial service, and he was in the pew with me. When I woke up, I smiled to myself, got out of bed, and got myself and my family ready for church, as it was a Sunday - December 9th, After lunch, when we were back home from church, I was going through papers that I needed to shred, and I came across his handwriting. He would always send me letters with newspaper clippings and other things that he thought I would like to read. When I saw his distinctive scrawl, I teared up a little. I knew that it was not a coincidence that I had the dream of him that morning and came upon his letters that same afternoon. Later that day, my family and I were out running errands. As it was already late afternoon, we decided to pick up food to take home for dinner. My husband, Jake, ran into the restaurant while I waited in the car with our boys. The food took a little longer than we anticipated, so while he was waiting, Jake texted me a picture that he took at our house earlier that day. As soon as I saw the picture, tears began streaming down my face. It was a cross of light shining on our wall, but even more amazing was that it looked as though it were reflected from the cross my grandfather made me from some spare square gold tiles from the dome of Sts. Constantine and Helen, although I knew this was not the case. The cross of light appeared in a place where it was impossible to be a reflection from the actual cross. Instead, it simply appeared on its own accord, and Jake, despite searching around a bit, was unable to determine where the light was coming from. He said it appeared after I left for church with the boys and a few minutes before he left for work, which would put it right around 10:20 or so on that Sunday morning. I immediately sent the picture to my mother and siblings, and they were equally amazed that it was not a reflection because it looked so exactly like the cross made of those gold tiles with shining squares of light. My mother then told me something even more amazing - that morning, there was a memorial service at Sts. Constantine and Helen, remembering all the parishioners who had passed away that year, including my grandfather. She said his name was read during the service. Well, that

cross appeared on our wall right around the same time the Gospel was read that morning. Sometimes, God works in mysterious ways, and sometimes, his signs are written on the wall for all to see.

12 explains my dream, I replied. Then I thought more about the timing. Anyone who is familiar with the timing of the Greek Orthodox liturgy knows that the Gospel is usually read somewhere between 10:15 and 10:30, depending on the speed of the service, which means the cross appeared on our wall right around the same time the Gospel was read that morning. Sometimes, God works in mysterious ways, and sometimes, his signs are written on the wall for all to see. I think I m supposed to help you with the book for church.
