Happy Birthday Fr. Isaac Hecker, CSP, Happy Birthday to you! You walk by his bust every week when you come in for Mass, a little to the right of the main church doors, the bust of Fr. Isaac Thomas Hecker - founder of the Paulist Fathers. This Tuesday would be his 199th birthday, and for us, it's the launch date leading up to his 200th birthday next year. If you don't already know about him here are some quick notes. Fr. Hecker grew up in a German Methodist home, where his mom was very devout. His father was the owner of the Hecker Flour Mill, a very successful business in its day in New York City. [In NYC you can still find Hecker Flour.] Hecker was a dreamer and a seeker. He only eventually came to the Catholic Church through it's mystical tradition. Prior to that, he was a contemporary of, and friends with, a group known as the transcendentalists that included people like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott and others. Finding his way to the Catholic Church, he quickly joined the Redemptorist Order, and became a Missionary. Along with four other Redemptorists, he encouraged a particular mission to the United States. When his idea was rejected, Hecker and his four companions were suspended from priesthood in the Order. Eventually, Fr. Hecker appealed to Pope Pius IX, who did not reinstate them but saw the need for a missionary group to serve in the United States. Fr. Hecker and his companions, were the founders for the first Religious Order founded in the United States of America - Hallelujah! As one of the "sons of Fr. Hecker," I invite you to join with me and all the Paulists as we salute Fr. Hecker on his 199th Birthday, and kick off our bicentennial year leading to his 200th Birthday next December.
