2 Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church Monaca, PA FROM FATHER MICHAEL S DESK Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This week we celebrate a feast that is near and dear to my heart. On July 26th, the Church remembers Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, the grandparents of Jesus and the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since my time in seminary, I have had a devotion to Saint Anne, whom I credit in assisting me throughout my formation to the priesthood. I have never forgotten the great graces and blessings that I received and continue to receive from Good Saint Anne. After my ordination to the priesthood, I decided to properly thank Saint Anne by journeying to her shrine located outside of Quebec, Canada. Although it was a thirteen-hour drive, I was filled with a level of excitement that I had not experienced before. I likened it to a child who was visiting their grandmother s house. For five days, I spent my Canonical Retreat at the shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. I celebrated Mass each day at the great basilica, preached at the principle Mass for the English-speaking pilgrims, joined in the evening devotions, climbed a replica of the Holy Stairs on my knees and prayed the Stations of the Cross. I have to admit it was a cathartic experience. All those years praying to Saint Anne, relying on her help, inspiration and love was brought to completion as I made this pilgrimage to her shrine as a newly ordained priest of Jesus Christ, her very own grandson. After that first retreat, I returned many more times. I plan to continue visiting this shrine throughout my life and avail myself to forging a deeper and greater relationship with Good Saint Anne, who has been so good to me. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend you make this journey for yourselves. It may seem like a far drive, but many of us travel just as far to find a good beach in the summer. The shrine is located only twenty minutes from downtown Quebec, which has the air of a European city. The churches are breathtaking, the food is wonderful and the atmosphere is peaceful. As we celebrate once again the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, may it be known their great love for us because by adoption we are sons and daughters of God. In Jesus Christ, our Brother, Mary has become our spiritual mother and by extension, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne have become our spiritual grandparents. Fr. In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples to Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. Vincent de Paul, a great man of action was also a contemplative. His contemplation of God s love overflowed into practical love for the poor. Please say a special prayer for the poor and forgotten, as you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box. This week, we are requesting assistance for a 17 year old young lady. Just as a shepherd guides the flock, so Jesus leads us, his flock, keeping us safe, encouraging us, placing us on his shoulders when we have strayed as he draws us back into the fold. The Lord s work as shepherd of our hearts is not limited to a time of trial or need in our lives. Jesus is always, actively leading us and it is the responsibility of each of us as Christians to listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow him on the path of life. Not only does Jesus lead us individually as his sisters and brothers, but also wholly as the Church. The shepherd keeps the flock moving together as one and goes in search of the lost in order that they may be one with the Church again. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we trust in the guidance of Christ the Good Shepherd to lead us and the Church through this time of change.
