3 I was part of a very productive Parish Finance Committee meeting last week. As a result of this meeting we made changes to how we report our finances in the bulletin. I hope you will find this more helpful. I would like to thank all of the Finance Committee members for their councel. As you come to church you are able to see the progress we are making with our Mary Grotto. Once this project is completed we will gather by Mary to bless the newly redesigned Grotto. Two families made a donation of $5, each for this project. We used these funds for the materials and for labor. We have volunteers working on this project to keep our costs low. We had a very successful fund raiser for our Youth /Young Adult Program. We have raised $4,634.00! We are looking forward not only to the World Youth Day but also to our regular program for youth and young adults starting in the fall. Thank you for your support. We have received the first check from To Teach Who Christ Is for $2, to cover the costs of our first Women s Christ Renews His Parish Retreat. Once we receive the final bill for our sound system upgrade we will be able to submit a check request for that as well. The next main project will be our roof. I have been meeting with my maintenance committee that will advise me on the extent of the work that needs to be done. Thank you very much for your support of our To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. If you did not have a chance to participate and would like to make a pledge please contact our parish office. This week I wanted to update you on our finances but to finish on a greener side: there will be a garden meeting on Sunday, June 26th after the 10:00 Mass. Fr. Karol A message from our Parish Finance Committee: As St. John s Parish continues to grow and make improvements to our church, Fr. Karol and the Parish Finance Committee thought this would be a great time to provide you with a breakdown of our weekly collections and a refresher on how Memorial donations benefit our parish. The Sunday collection, which is considered our ordinary income (the white envelopes) is assessed 10% by the Archdiocese. All parishes within the archdiocese are assessed the same to help offset the operating costs of the pastoral center in downtown Chicago. However, some parishioners submit their white envelope with the word Memorial written on the envelope. These funds are not assessed by the archdiocese. Even though Memorial envelopes helps our parish directly, the archdiocese also provides needed services to the parish. Please prayerfully consider this issue before submitting your envelope. The remaining envelopes in your packet (Building Maintenance, Air Conditioning, 50/50, etc.) are considered extraordinary income and are also not taxed by the Archdiocese. 100% of this money also remains at the parish but it can only be used for the purpose stated on the envelope. Going forward you will begin to see a different breakdown of the weekly parish finances in the bulletin. The breakdown will include a weekly collection goal that will be established by the Parish Finance Committee and approved by Fr. Karol. This goal is established by taking the parish s total Sunday collection budget number for the year and dividing it by the number of Sundays in the year, not including holidays. For example, the goal for the 2016/2017 year will be determined by 50 Sundays due to Easter Sunday and Christmas, which falls on a Sunday. The goal reflects our fiscal year which runs from July 1st through June 30th. The weekly financial breakdown will include: Our Weekly Goal, Total Sunday Collection including memorials, Total Number of Envelopes Collected, Total Amount for E-Giving, Total Number of E-Giving Transactions, Combined Total of Regular Envelopes, E-Giving & Memorials. On a monthly basis we will include a breakdown of all extraordinary income (Building Maintenance, Air Conditioning, etc.) We hope that this new way of reporting our collections will give you a clearer picture of our parish finances. Fr. Karol and members of our Finance Committee are always happy to answer questions.

BIKING WITH FATHER On Monday evenings at 6 PM meet here at church with your bike and helmet for Biking with Fr.. It will be a lot of fun and great exercise at the same time!! Everyone is welcome. HOPE AND LIFE Today s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. - KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS WHITE SOX OUTING The K of C will sponsor an outing to a White Sox game for Special Olympics on June 29th. A prayer text from a dusty library may yield, for example, an understanding of what presbyters actually did. We have such a prayer from the early third century from the hand of Hippolytus of Rome. While our modern prayers derive a great deal from his, some of the practices of the ancient church have fallen away. In his day, bishops were chosen by the people, and the other bishops merely consented. Presbyters, by contrast, seem to have been chosen by the bishops. This makes sense, since it allowed the bishops to hand-pick their most trusted advisers. It seems that bishops were at first reluctant to share their presiding at the Eucharist with presbyters. In fact, by the time of the fourth-century church s growth spurt in Rome, the bishop sent deacons out with fragments of the host from his Eucharist to drop into the chalices of the presbyters at the outlying eucharistic celebrations. We still have a vestige of this fermentum in the Mass today, a reminder of the early bishops desire to give a powerful sign of the unity of all celebrations of the Eucharist with their ministry, and a clue to their reluctance to delegate a sacramental ministry to the presbyters.
