St. Alban's proclaims to all, through word and deed, the grace of God in Jesus Christ. November 4, 2018 The Feast of All Saints (observed) 7:30 AM Holy Eucharist, Rite I According to the Book of Common Prayer (BCP)

ADVENT CHRISTMAS EPIPHANY LENT EASTER PENTECOST Our church follows the Christian year (also called the Church year). For millennia, Christians have used this system to organize each year around the life of Christ. The Church Year begins at Advent, as we wait for the arrival of Jesus celebrated at Christmas. During Epiphany, we celebrate Christ revealing himself to the world. In Lent, we prepare for the remembrance of Christ's death during Holy Week and resurrection at Easter. On Pentecost, we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit, who sustains us in our life in Christ during the season known as Ordinary time. We re glad that you re here! St. Alban s is an Episcopal Church, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Worship in our tradition is liturgical, which means that we use written prayers. This is an ancient and biblical way to pray. The liturgy makes worship something the community does, not just the minister up front. It helps us when our own words fail. It ensures we receive a steady diet of God s Word. And it reminds us every week of God s grace in Jesus Christ. Guests: Please complete the hello card located in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate or give it to an usher. If you have any questions, our ushers and ministers are here to help. After the service, stop by our welcome station for a St. Alban s tote bag. Children: Children are welcome in our services. If they get restless, feel free to take them for a walk in the courtyard or lobby. Our 9:00 and 11:15 AM services feature Children's Chapel. Our nursery is open from 8:45 AM-12:30 PM. Restrooms: Men s and women s restrooms are available on either side of the narthex (lobby). Changing tables are available in every restroom in the Parish Hall and office building across from the courtyard. Sunday School: We offer classes for all ages at 10:15 AM in the Outreach Center. Visit stalbanswaco.org/sunday-classes for more information. Coffee Hour: Join us after the service for coffee outside the church. Please silence cell phones and mobile devices. During the prelude, please be mindful of those preparing for worship. 2

THIS BULLETIN IS AVAILABLE ONLINE Go to stalbanswaco.org/bulletins and click on the link for today s service. THE HOLY EUCHARIST - 7:30 AM Rite I, according to the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) Eucharist, meaning thanksgiving, comes from the Greek words for good and gift. Please stand. Opening Acclamation BCP 323 Celebrant People Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Collect for Purity BCP 323 Summary of the Law and Kyrie BCP 324 The Collect of the Day BCP 194 Celebrant People Celebrant The Lord be with you. And with thy Spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow thy blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that thou hast prepared for those who unfeignedly love thee; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. People Amen. Please be seated for the readings. THE WORD OF GOD The Epistle Hebrews 9:11-14 Pew Bible, p. 975 When Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. 3

For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God! Lector People Psalm 146 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Lauda, anima mea 1 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul! * I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 2 Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth, * for there is no help in them. 3 When they breathe their last, they return to earth, * and in that day their thoughts perish. 4 Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! * whose hope is in the Lord their God; 5 Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever; 6 Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, * and food to those who hunger. 7 The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind; * the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; 8 The Lord loves the righteous; the Lord cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. 9 The Lord shall reign for ever, * your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah! 4

The Gospel (please stand) Mark 12:28-34 Pew Bible, p. 823 Reader People The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. One of the scribes came near and heard the Saducees disputing with one another, and seeing that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, Which commandment is the first of all? Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Then the scribe said to him, You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other ; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one s neighbor as oneself, this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that no one dared to ask him any question. Reader People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman The Nicene Creed (please stand) BCP 327 The Prayers of the People (please kneel) Form III, BCP 387 Father, we pray for thy holy Catholic* Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of thy Church may truly and humbly serve thee; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; for Andy, Dena, Jeff, and Hector, our Bishops; for Aaron, Neal, and Keith, our Priests; for Alberto, our Deacon; and for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of thy Word and Sacraments. We pray for our armed forces, for the people of our country, for peace in the Middle East, and for Donald, our President; Greg, our Governor; Kyle, our Mayor; and all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. *Catholic means universal. 5

Getting Connected at St. Alban's ALL SAINTS' NECROLOGY The phrase communion of saints means that all of us who are in Christ, who belong to him, are bound together in him, whether we are in our earthly life or our heavenly one. Christ is Lord of us all! This great theological reality is celebrated every year on All Saints Day, which is always on November 1 and is also transferred to the nearest Sunday. One of the ways we observe this day is by listing the deceased in a list called the Necrology. We have two necrologies. The first lists all the names of St. Alban's members who have died in the year since the last All Saints Day. The second necrology lists all the names of deceased loved ones who died at any time in the past. These names were submitted by members of St. Alban's. The list of names can be found below. We ask you to remember and pray for the dead, that they may rest in peace and rise in glory. In sure and certain hope of the resurrection, we remember all we have lost, knowing Jesus defeated sin and death forever, opening the gates of paradise for everyone. We await the resurrection of the dead, when all things will be reconciled to God and made perfect in him. Pray for the saints, that we too might enter God s glory. 8

The proceeds of the tag sale took longer to reach Malawi than our other mission partners, but the money arrived just in time for the parish of All Saints to buy maize flour for 230 families during a season when food resources are stretched in Malawi. A great example of God's grace and the power of the body of Christ globally. 12
