THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST CHRISTMAS EVE 3:00 PM Family Eucharist with Pageant SUNDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2017 St. Alban s proclaims to all, through word and deed, the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

ADVENT CHRISTMAS EPIPHANY LENT EASTER PENTECOST Our church follows the Christian year (also called the Church year). For millennia, Christians have used this system to organize each year around the life of Christ. The Church Year begins at Advent, as we wait for the arrival of Jesus celebrated at Christmas. During Epiphany, we celebrate Christ revealing himself to the world. In Lent, we prepare for the remembrance of Christ's death during Holy Week and resurrection at Easter. On Pentecost, we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit, who sustains us in our life in Christ during the season known as Ordinary time. We re glad that you re here! St. Alban s is an Episcopal Church, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Worship in our tradition is liturgical, which means that we use written prayers. This is an ancient and biblical way to pray. The liturgy makes worship something the community does, not just the minister up front. It helps us when our own words fail. It ensures we receive a steady diet of God s Word. And it reminds us every week of God s grace in Jesus Christ. Guests: Please complete the hello card located in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate or give it to an usher. If you have any questions, our ushers and ministers are here to help. After the service, stop by our welcome station for a St. Alban s tote bag. Restrooms: Men s and women s restrooms are available on either side of the narthex (lobby). Changing tables are available in every restroom in the Parish Hall and office building across from the courtyard. Please silence cell phones and mobile devices. During the prelude, please be mindful of those preparing for worship. 2

Children are welcome in our services. Please help them be mindful of others who are with us for worship. If your little ones get restless, feel free to take them for a walk in the narthex or courtyard. Our nursery is open for ages 0-4 for the 3:00 and 8:30 PM services today. Nursery (ages 0-4): Nursery care is available for this service. The nursery is located in the Sunday School Building, across the courtyard. Please ask our ushers for help should you require assistance. On Sundays, we offer a full range of Christian Formation for all ages. Join us! 6 All stand and face the Gospel reader. The Gospel Luke 2:1-14 Pew Bible, p. 832 Deacon People The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" Deacon People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Please be seated. Christmas Pageant Please do not take pictures or video during the Pageant. The Homily The Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman 6

The Prayers of the People Form III, BCP 387 Please kneel. The Intercessor and People pray responsively. Father, we pray for your holy Catholic* Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; for Andy, Dena, Jeff, and Hector, our Bishops; for Aaron and Judy, our Priests; for Neal, our Curate; for Alberto, our Deacon; for Korey, our seminarian; and for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for our armed forces, for the people of our country, for peace in the Middle East, and for Donald, our President; Greg, our Governor; Kyle, our Mayor; and all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to all the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for Stephen, John, and all your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence We pray for all those on our parish prayer list and for our sister parish of All Saints, Nambiti, Malawi. The Celebrant adds a concluding collect. Our continuing parish prayer list may be found on page 25. Please contact the church office to add or remove a name from the list. *Catholic means universal. 8

Confession of Sin BCP 359 The Deacon says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Minister and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Absolution BCP 360 The Peace BCP 360 Celebrant People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another in the name of the Lord. Please be seated. 11 The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer B BCP 367 Celebrant People Celebrant People Celebrant People The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus & Benedictus Hymnal S

People kneel or stand for Eucharistic Prayers. Eucharistic Canon and Christ's Words of Institution BCP 368 We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Memorial Acclamation BCP 368 Celebrant People Therefore according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; Then the celebrant continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mary, Joseph and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. Great Amen BCP 369 By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. The people respond in a loud voice: AMEN. 12

The Lord's Prayer BCP 364 Celebrant People And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Fraction Anthem Hymnal S-154 Invitation to Communion & Ministration of the Sacrament All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion. See p. 10 for instructions. If you would like a gluten-free wafer, please tell the minister at the rail. If you have questions about what we believe about Communion, visit stalbanswaco.org/communion. 13

By Kenn Harding Getting Connected at St. Alban's The story behind the Chrismon Tree Each year on the Sunday before Christmas, the Chrismon tree is erected in the chancel area and decorated. It shines beautifully in green, white, and gold, but have you ever wondered about the meaning? As with the Christmas tree, the evergreen tree itself symbolizes the eternal life Jesus Christ provides. The Chrismon tree is lit only with clear lights referring to Him who is the light of the world. The ornaments are made from white and gold material representing the liturgical colors of the Christmas season. These ornaments are called Chrismons, a word derived from the Latin phrase Christi monogramma translating as monogram of Christ. Among the Chrismons on our tree, you will find symbols related directly to Jesus and his life: the Holy Spirit descending as a dove at His baptism, the five-pointed star representing the five wounds of Jesus on the cross. You will also find symbols from nature: a seashell and a butterfly, the symbol of transformation. Some Chrismons are simple while others are complex like the A and upside down U, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet representing the words of Jesus: I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and last, the beginning and the end. But, how did it start? In 1940, the Rev. George Pass was an elderly minister who visited the home of Frances Kipps Spencer during the Christmas season. Rev. Pass was from a poor church, and, in order to acquire the materials to make decorations, he asked Mrs. Spencer for her discarded wrappings. His creations from these meager materials were then shared with his congregation. Rev. Pass s great devotion moved Mrs. Spencer and her husband, Harry, to continue the tradition and to make their own ornaments for decorating their tree. In 1957, Mrs. Spencer volunteered to be in charge of the decorations for her church, The Ascension Lutheran Church of Danville, VA. She decided that instead of traditional balls and colored lights homemade ornaments would be more appropriate. Mrs. Spencer began to study the monograms of Christ and, after discovering the Latin word chrisma, the name Chrismon was born. Four instructional books were written by Mrs. Spencer with the help of her congregation so that this ministry might be shared throughout the United States and the world. Just like Mrs. Spencer, the ladies of St Alban s made the Chrismons on our tree in For some of you a piece of your heritage shines from the Chrismon Tree in the Chancel, while for others a new piece of the tradition hangs on the tree in the Parish Hall Chrismons made by your children. But wherever they hang, these special ornaments are reminders of the celebration of the birthday of Jesus! 25
