THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST CHRISTMAS EVE 8:30 & 11:00 PM Choral Eucharist, Rite II SUNDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2017 St. Alban s proclaims to all, through word and deed, the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

ADVENT CHRISTMAS EPIPHANY LENT EASTER PENTECOST Our church follows the Christian year (also called the Church year). For millennia, Christians have used this system to organize each year around the life of Christ. The Church Year begins at Advent, as we wait for the arrival of Jesus celebrated at Christmas. During Epiphany, we celebrate Christ revealing himself to the world. In Lent, we prepare for the remembrance of Christ's death during Holy Week and resurrection at Easter. On Pentecost, we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit, who sustains us in our life in Christ during the season known as Ordinary time. We re glad that you re here! St. Alban s is an Episcopal Church, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Worship in our tradition is liturgical, which means that we use written prayers. This is an ancient and biblical way to pray. The liturgy makes worship something the community does, not just the minister up front. It helps us when our own words fail. It ensures we receive a steady diet of God s Word. And it reminds us every week of God s grace in Jesus Christ. Guests: Please complete the hello card located in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate or give it to an usher. If you have any questions, our ushers and ministers are here to help. After the service, stop by our welcome station for a St. Alban s tote bag. Restrooms: Men s and women s restrooms are available on either side of the narthex (lobby). Changing tables are available in every restroom in the Parish Hall and office building across from the courtyard. Please silence cell phones and mobile devices. During the prelude, please be mindful of those preparing for worship. 2

Children are welcome in our services. Please help them be mindful of others who are with us for worship. If your little ones get restless, feel free to take them for a walk in the narthex or courtyard. Our nursery is open for ages 0-4 for the 8:30 PM service today, but not for the 10:30 PM concert or 11:00 PM service. Nursery (ages 0-4): Nursery care is available for the 8:30 PM Choral Eucharist. The nursery is located in the Sunday School Building, across the courtyard. Please ask our ushers for help should you require assistance. On Sundays, we offer a full range of Christian Formation for all ages. Join us! Godly Tots (Age 2 to 4) Godly Tots Rm, Outreach Ctr (ORC), 1st fl, Rm 8 Godly Play (Ages 4-6; K, 1st & 2nd gr.) 4 10:30 PM CONCERT FOR CHOIR & ORGAN Organ In dulci jubilo, BWV 729 Carol I wonder as I wander J.S. Bach ( ) Karl Read (b. 1974) I wonder as I wander, out under the sky, How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die, For poor on ry people like you and like I, I wonder as I wander, out under the sky. When Mary birthed Jesus all in a cow s stall, Came wise men and farmers and shepherds and all. But high from God s heaven a star s light did fall, And the promise of ages it did then recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing, A star in the sky or a bird on the wing, Or all of God s angels in heav n for to sing, He surely could have it for he was the King. Carol Away in a manger David Willcocks ( ) Away for in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky. And stay by my side until morning is nigh, Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay Close by me for ever and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there. Organ Siciliana: The holly and the ivy Alec Rowley ( ) 4

Carol Sussex Carol Philip Ledger ( ) On Christmas night all Christians sing, To hear the news the angels bring News of great joy, news of great mirth, News of our merciful King s birth. Then why should men on earth be so sad, Since our Redeemer made us glad, When from our sin he set us free, All for to gain our liberty? When sin departs before his grace, Then life and health come in its place; Angels and men with joy may sing, All for to see the new-born King. All out of darkness we have light, Which made the angels sing this night: Glory to God and peace to men, Now and for evermore. Amen. Carol Tomorrow shall be my dancing day John Gardner ( ) Tomorrow shall be my dancing day: I would my true love did so chance To see the legend of my play, To call my true love to my dance: Sing, O my love, O my love, my love, my love; This have I done for my true love. Then was I born of a virgin pure, Of her I took fleshly substance Thus was I knit to man s nature To call my true love to my dance. In a manger laid, and wrapped I was So very poor, this was my chance Betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass To call my true love to my dance. Then afterwards baptized I was; The Holy Ghost on me did glance, My Father s voice heard I from above, To call my true love to my dance: 5

Carol O holy night Adolphe Adam ( ) O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, it is the night of the dear Saviour s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appear d and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother; and in His name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, let all within us praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord! O praise His Name forever, His power and glory evermore proclaim. Organ Christmas Cradle Song Alfred Hollins ( ) Johannes Brahms ( ) Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen 6

John Francis Wade ( ); arr. David Willcocks ( ) 7

The Opening Acclamation BCP 355 Celebrant People Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. Collect for Purity Celebrant People Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Song of Praise Angels we have heard on high Hymnal 96 8

The Collect of the Day BCP 213 Celebrant People Celebrant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and for ever. People Amen. Please be seated for the readings. The Old Testament Lesson Isaiah 9:2-7 Pew Bible, p. 555 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 9

His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Lector People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sung by the choir. Psalm 96:1-9 Cantate Domino Alan Gray ( ) 1 O sing unto the Lord a new song;* sing unto the Lord, all the whole earth. 2 Sing unto the Lord, and praise his Name;* be telling of his salvation from day to day. 3 Declare his honour unto the heathen,* and his wonders unto all people. 4 For the Lord is great, and cannot worthily be praised;* he is more to be feared than all gods. 5 As for all the gods of the heathen, they are but idols;* but it is the Lord that made the heavens. 6 Glory and worship are before him;* power and honour are in his sanctuary. 7 Ascribe unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people,* ascribe unto the Lord worship and power. 8 Ascribe unto the Lord the honour due unto his Name;* bring presents, and come into his courts. 9 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;* let the whole earth stand in awe of him. 10

The Epistle Titus 2:11-14 Pew Bible, p. 969 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. Lector People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand. Turn to face the cross as it passes in procession. Gradual Hymn God rest you merry, Gentlemen Words: London carol, 18th cent. Music: God Rest You Merry, melody from Litle Book of Christmas Carols, ca arr. David Willcocks ( ) 11

Remain standing and face the Gospel reader. The Gospel Luke 2:1-20 Pew Bible, p. 832 Deacon People The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. Deacon People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Please be seated. The Sermon The Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman 12

All stand. The Nicene Creed BCP 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Catholic means universal. 13

The Prayers of the People Form III, BCP 387 Please kneel. The Intercessor and People pray responsively. Father, we pray for your holy Catholic* Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; for Andy, Dena, Jeff, and Hector, our Bishops; for Aaron and Judy, our Priests; for Neal, our Curate; for Alberto, our Deacon; for Korey, our seminarian; and for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for our armed forces, for the people of our country, for peace in the Middle East, and for Donald, our President; Greg, our Governor; Kyle, our Mayor; and all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to those in whose memory poinsettias are given and all the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for all your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence We pray for all those on our parish prayer list and for our sister parish of All Saints, Nambiti, Malawi. The Celebrant adds a concluding collect. Our continuing parish prayer list may be found on page 25. Please contact the church office to add or remove a name from the list. 14

Confession of Sin BCP 359 The Deacon says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Minister and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Absolution BCP 360 The Comfortable Words BCP 332 Called the comfortable words since the 16th century because of their ability to give comfort, these Bible verses (Matthew 11:28, John 3:16, 1 Timothy 1:15, 1 John 2:1-2) are a cherished part of Anglican liturgy. St. Alban s uses a contemporary language version in this Rite II service. All stand. The Peace BCP 360 Celebrant People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another in the name of the Lord. Please be seated. Parish Announcements Infants/Toddlers at Communion: At this point of the service, some parents/caregivers choose to pick up their children from the nursery and bring them into the church for Communion. Others choose to pick them up after the end of the service. Baptized children are welcome to receive Communion. Those not baptized are invited to receive a blessing. 15

THE HOLY COMMUNION All baptized Christians, regardless of age or denomination, are welcome to receive Communion at the Lord s Table. Come forward by rows and kneel at the altar rail. The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown. O, the rising of the sun and the running of the deer, The playing of the organ, sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a prickle as sharp as any thorn; And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ on Christmas Day in the morn. Doxology The holly bears a bark as bitter as any gall, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ for to redeem us all. Words: Thomas Ken ( ) Music: Old 100th, melody from Pseaumes octante trois de David, 1551, alt.; harm. after Louis Bourgeois (1510?-1561?) 16

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer B BCP 367 Celebrant People Celebrant People Celebrant People The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus & Benedictus Festival Eucharist Craig Phillips (b. 1961) Organ 3 & # # 4 & # # & # # & # # & # # Congregation œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ Ho œ œ œ œ œ J œ Œ - ly, ho - ly, ho - ly Lord, God of pow - er and might, heaven and earth are œ œ j œ œ œ œ œ Œ œ n œ œ œ œ full of your glory. 18 People kneel or stand for Eucharistic Prayers. Eucharistic Canon and Christ's Words of Institution BCP 368 We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Memorial Acclamation BCP 368 Celebrant People Therefore according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; Then the celebrant continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mary, Joseph and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. 18

Great Amen BCP 369 By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. The people respond in a loud voice: AMEN. The Lord's Prayer BCP 364 Celebrant People And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
