3 Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel for the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach us in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide us to perceive what is right, and grant us both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 3

4 Opening Voluntary: Sonata Pian e Forte by Giovanni Gabrieli The people stand and join in singing: Hymn 410 Praise my soul, the King of Heaven (See page 12) The people standing, the Bishop says Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Bishop then says Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. When appointed, the following hymn or some other song of praise is sung or said, all standing Glory to God, Peruvian folk song, In Every Corner Sing (See page 13) The Celebrant says to the people The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Ministry of the Word Old Testament Numbers 11: 16-17, So the LORD said to Moses, Gather for me seventy of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tent of meeting, and have them take their place there with you. I will come down and talk with you there; and I will take some of the spirit that is on you and put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people along with you so that you will not bear it all by yourself. So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD; and he gathered seventy elders of the people, and placed them all around the tent. Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do so again. Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in 4

5 the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp. And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, My lord Moses, stop them! But Moses said to him, Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD s people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit on them! And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm Remain seated 8 The LORD is full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 He will not always accuse us, nor will he keep his anger for ever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our wickedness. ANTIPHON 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, so is his mercy great upon those who fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our sins from us. ANTIPHON 13 As a father cares for his children, so does the LORD care for those who fear him. 14 For he himself knows whereof we are made; he remembers that we are but dust. ANTIPHON Epistle Romans 10: But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news! But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message? So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. 5

6 The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation, Missa Guadalupe (See page 14) All standing, the Deacon or a Priest reads the Gospel, first saying The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Gospel Luke 10: 1-9 After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this house! And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, The kingdom of God has come near to you. After the Gospel, the Reader says The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rt. Rev. Mariann Budde, Bishop of Washington The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit 6

7 he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. People Mayenziwe ntando yako Intercessor For Michael, our presiding bishop; for Andy, Dena and Jeff, our bishops; for Mariann, Bishop of Washington; Alinafe, Bishop of Southern Malawi; Héctor, Bishop of Costa Rica and Michael, Bishop of North Dakota; and for all bishops, priests, and deacons, we pray to the Lord. 8 Intercessor For all who seek and serve God in the Church, and for all who seek a deeper knowledge of God, we pray to the Lord. People Mayenziwe ntando yako Intercessor For our President, Donald; for our governor, Greg; for the Congress and the legislatures; for the courts of the land, and for all who exercise authority over and hold responsibility for others, we pray to the Lord. People Mayenziwe ntando yako Intercessor For all those who work for peace and justice, and all those who feed, heal, and minister to the dispossessed and the destitute, we pray to the Lord. People Mayenziwe ntando yako Intercessor For God s Creation, that we might know it as God s, preserve its beauty, and use its resources justly, we pray to the Lord. People Mayenziwe ntando yako Intercessor For the poor, the sick, and the hungry; for the unemployed and the underemployed; for the oppressed and those in prison; and for all those who suffer from any grief or trouble, we pray to the Lord. People Mayenziwe ntando yako Intercessor For the departed, and for all the saints of God, who rest in the sure and certain hope of resurrection, we pray to the Lord. People Mayenziwe ntando yako Intercessor For the absolution and remission of our sins and offenses, let us pray to the Lord. People Mayenziwe ntando yako Bishop Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Peace The Bishop says The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. 8

9 The Holy Communion The liturgy continues with the Offertory. Anthem How lovely are the messengers, Felix Mendelssohn Deacons prepare the Table. Then the Bishop goes to the Lord s Table as chief Celebrant and, joined by other bishops and presbyters, proceeds with the celebration of the Eucharist. The People remain standing. The Bishop faces them and says The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Bishop Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Bishop Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. The Bishop proceeds. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: WLP 854 Sanctus Joel Matinson, Misa Guadalupe (See pages 15-16) Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. 9

10 After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Bishop and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Bishop continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 10

Facing the people, the Bishop says the following Invitation The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
