ADVENT CHRISTMAS EPIPHANY LENT EASTER PENTECOST Our church follows the Christian year (also called the Church year). For millennia, Christians have used this system to organize each year around the life of Christ. The Church Year begins at Advent, as we wait for the arrival of Jesus celebrated at Christmas. During Epiphany, we celebrate Christ revealing himself to the world. In Lent, we prepare for the remembrance of Christ's death during Holy Week and resurrection at Easter. On Pentecost, we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit, who sustains us in our life in Christ during the season known as Ordinary time. We re glad that you re here. St. Alban s is an Episcopal Church, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Worship in our tradition is liturgical, which means that we use written prayers. This is an ancient and biblical way to pray. The liturgy makes worship something the community does, not just the minister up front. It helps us when our own words fail. It ensures we receive a steady diet of God s Word. And it reminds us every week of God s grace in Jesus Christ. Guests: Please complete the hello card located in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate or give it to an usher. If you have any questions, our ushers and ministers are here to help. After the service, stop by our welcome station for a St. Alban s tote bag. Restrooms: Men s and women s restrooms are available on either side of the narthex (lobby). Changing tables are available in every restroom in the Parish Hall and office building across from the courtyard. Please silence cell phones and mobile devices. During the prelude, please be mindful of those preparing for worship. 2

Children are welcome in our services. Please help them be mindful of others who are with us for worship. If your little ones get restless, feel free to take them for a walk in the narthex or courtyard. At our 9:00 & 11:15 AM services, our nursery is open for ages 0-4. Nursery (ages 0-4): Open from 8:45 AM-12:45 PM in the Sunday School Building. After announcements, some parents/caregivers choose to pick up their children from the nursery to bring them to Communion; others choose to pick them up after the end of the service. Children s Chapel (ages 4-9): At the 9:00 & 11:15 AM services, children ages 4-9 are dismissed before the Gospel reading for children s chapel in Higgins Chapel. They return before Communion. 5 A Penitential Order BCP 319 Bless the Lord who forgiveth all our sins. His mercy endureth for ever. An Exhortation BCP 316 It is our tradition to read this Exhortation once during the season of Lent. The Decalogue (The Ten Commandments) BCP 317 All kneel. God spake these words, and said: I am the Lord thy God who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have none other gods but me. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth; thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Honor thy father and thy mother. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Thou shalt do no murder. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Thou shalt not steal. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. 5

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Thou shalt not covet. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. The says If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8,9 The Confession BCP 320 The then says Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Minister and Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy name. Amen. The Absolution BCP 321 The celebrant says The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absoltion and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen. 6

Kyrie Hymnal S-91 Sung by all. The Collect of the Day BCP 166 The Lord be with you. And with thy Spirit. Let us pray. O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from thy ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of thy Word, Jesus Christ thy Son; who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 7

Please be seated for the readings. THE WORD OF GOD The Old Testament Lesson Genesis 17:1-7, Pew Bible, p. 11 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous. Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her. Lector The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. All stand for the Psalm. Sung by all. Psalm 22:23-32 Deus, Deus meus Tone II.1 Cantor O praise the Lord, ye that / fear him:* magnify him all ye of the seed of Jacob; and fear him all ye / seed of Israel. For he hath not despised nor abhorred the low estate of the / poor;* he hath not hid his face from him; but when he called unto / him he heard him. 25 My praise is of thee in the great congre/gation;* my vows will I perform in the sight of / them that fear him. 8

26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied; they that seek after the Lord shall / praise him:* your heart shall / live for ever. 27 All the ends of the world shall remember themselves, and be turned unto the / Lord;* and all the kindreds of the nations shall / worship before him. 28 For the kingdom is the / Lord's,* and he is the Governor a/mong the people. 29 All such as be fat upon / earth* have / eaten and worshipped. 30 All they that go down into the dust shall kneel be/fore him;* and no man hath quickened his / own soul. 31 My seed shall / serve him:* they shall be counted unto the Lord for a / generation. 32 They shall come and shall declare his / righteousness* unto a people that shall be born whom the / Lord hath made. The Epistle Romans 4:13-25 Pew Bible, p. 916 For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, I have made you the father of many nations ) in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become the father of many nations, according to what was said, So numerous shall your descendants be. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith was reckoned to him as righteousness. Now the words, it was reckoned to him, were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. 9

It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. Lector The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Children s Blessing & Dismissal Children are invited forward for a Blessing before following the Cross to Children s Chapel. The children return before Communion. Please stand. Turn to face the cross as it passes in procession. Gradual Hymn The glory of these forty days Hymnal 143 Words: Latin, 6th cent.; tr. Maurice F. Bell ( ), alt. Music: Erhalt uns, Herr, melody from Geistliche Lieder,

Remain standing and face the Gospel reader. The Gospel Mark 8:31-38 Pew Bible, p. 820 Reader The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus began to teach his disciples that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Reader The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. Please be seated. The Sermon The Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman 11

All stand. The Nicene Creed BCP 327 I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic* and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Catholic means universal. 12

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer I BCP 333 It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. 20 Music Notes Felix Mendelssohn ( ) was a German composer, organist, pianist, and conductor of the early romantic period. A child prodigy, comparisons to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were made from a young age with Mendelssohn beginning his musical studies at age 6, making his first public performance at age 9, and composing his first symphony for full orchestra at 15. Mendelssohn wrote Verleih uns Frieden in 1831 after a visit to the Vatican. The text is the traditional Latin hymn Dona nobis pacem, as translated into German by Martin Luther. By 1831, Mendelssohn had been studying the music of Johann Sebastian Bach for several years and had led a famous revival of the St. Matthew Passion in Verleih uns Frieden is heavily influenced by the music of Bach with the work being built around a chorale melody and culminating with a four-part realization of the theme. YOUR LENTEN PRAYERS For the season of Lent, the clergy of the parish would like to pray for your specific prayer needs. If you would like them to pray for you, please use this space to write down a prayer request, or you may use a prayer card in the pew rack. You may add your name or leave it anonymous. Tear off the page and place it in the purple Prayer Box in the narthex (lobby). Our clergy also ask that you pray for them. May the Lord bless our parish family in this Lenten season. 21 LENT AT ST. ALBAN'S Liturgical Changes for Lent You ll notice some changes in our liturgy during Sundays in Lent. From March 5-April 2, we will use Rite I in all our services. This service traces its roots to the first Book of Common Prayer (1549). You ll notice beautiful traditional language but there s more to it than that. This service powerfully captures both the reality of the human condition and God s great grace to us in Jesus Christ. Additionally, there are some other changes in keeping with the Lenten themes of waiting, exile, and mortality: We omit the Alleluias. We do not place flowers on the Altar. We do not sing or say the Gloria (the hymn of praise at the beginning of the service) or the Doxology ( Praise God from whom all blessings flow, sung at the presentation of the offerings). We do not use the carillon (the bells in the tower that usually play before and after the service). The liturgical color of purple reflects penance and reminds us the purple garment Christ was forced to wear by mocking soldiers after his arrest. Finally, the wooden Holy Table we normally use for Communion will be removed. We will celebrate Communion on St. Alban s original altar, with the facing east (ad orientem). Having the clergy and people all face the same direction reminds us of our common humanity, all approaching God humbly, mindful of our sin and his mercy. 21

Communion Class for Children All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion in the Episcopal Church, regardless of age. But many parents prefer to wait until their children have some understanding of what Communion means. Towards that end, we are offering Come to the Table, a fun, engaging four-part class for children in third grade and up. We ll talk about who Jesus is, why he wants us to celebrate the Eucharist, and we ll talk about the nuts and bolts what words like Eucharist and chalice mean, how we receive the bread, why we kneel, and more. The class will run during 10:15 AM Sunday School February 18 - March 18 and for each child, at least one parent must also attend. Call the church or childrensministry@stalbanswaco.org to register for the class. 24

Getting Connected at St. Alban's 2018 Lenten Series Lent is a time for self-examination.
