1 CONGRESS 2016 Andrea Kwiatkowski is a BWY Diploma Course Tutor, Advanced Certified Jivamukti teacher, Yin yoga and Restorative teacher. She lives and teaches in Cambridge, runs various IST days for the BWY and is a lead tutor for Congress and Teacher training week. Andrea trained as a dancer and became a yoga teacher in her 20 s. She is studying Sanskrit with the London school of economics and continues to be inspired by her teachers and students. Andrea is very pleased to be involved as part of the celebrations of the BWY 50th anniversary and looks forward to meeting as many students past and present in her classes this year. 15th -17th April 2016 Happy anniversary BWY! Session A - Friday DP, A A Jivamukti yoga twisting class which will include a variety of asana sequences, hands on adjustments, meditation, chanting, scripture study and relaxation. The class will be accompanied by a 60 s musical soundtrack to complement going through the ages of yoga for the 50th anniversary. Satsang - good company, good vibrations! Session C - Saturday DP, A, Ch, M, R Satsang means keeping good company, when we associate with others who are focused on enlightenment. In the Jivamukti yoga method we come together to inspire and connect. The session will include asana sequencing, hands on adjustments, chanting, meditation, scripture study and relaxation. 2 Wilfred Clark The British Wheel of Yoga was founded by Wilfred Clark in 1965 It has been over 50 years since Wilfred Clark founded The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY). In that time the BWY has grown to become the largest yoga membership organisation in the country and a member of the European Union of Yoga. We continue to be committed to promoting a greater understanding of yoga and its safe practice through experience, education, discussion, study and training. We are proud of our national network with over 7,000 members including 3,500 qualified teachers. 3 Chair s Message Congress is the most important event in the BWY calendar Congress is a celebration and this year the theme is community, this is an opportunity for many of us to come together, practice with some of the world s leading teachers, meet like-minded colleagues and immerse ourselves into a weekend of yoga related activity. The NEC look forward to welcoming you to this years event. With numerous different sessions of yoga to choose from we aim to offer something for everyone as well as the chance to experience new and/or different styles of yoga. One of the many reasons our members come to Congress each year is the social aspect and to meet colleagues and friends. Our plenary speaker will be Akhandadhi Das. Akhandadhi Das is an adherent of Vaishnava Vedanta philosophy - one of the main strands of the Hindu wisdom tradition. Now in its 49th year, Congress has grown around the BWY Annual General Meeting. It is an opportunity to meet the National Executive Committee (NEC) at the AGM and throughout the weekend to raise any matters you feel are important or simply say hello We will continue to listen and just as we have listened and made improvements to Congress we hope to continue to create a BWY that you, our members want and expect. 4 Plenary speaker A Vaishnava, Hindu teacher & theologian Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland Akhandadhi Das was raised Presbyterian. As a teenager he read and learned about Eastern philosophies and has been committed to Vaishnava Hinduism since He ministered to the Hindu community in London from 1976 founding a series of youth clubs and study groups before becoming the Principal of Bhaktivedanta Manor in 1982 leading the campaign to protect the UK s largest temple from government closure. He was a founding committee member of Inter-faith Network and worked as a Member of BBC s Central Religious Advisory Committee. Akhandadhi is currently a Trustee of I-Foundation Faith Authority for UK Hindu Schools and continues to regularly contribute to Radio 4 s Thought for the Day. 5 Adaptive Yoga - Frederique Sardais, Jo Duffin and Suzanne Galfredi Frederique Sardais, Jo Duffin and Suzanne Galfredi, all classically trained Yoga teachers met in 2012 whilst attending workshops with Matthew Sanford, founder of Mind Body Solutions and pioneering the Adaptive Yoga approach worldwide. 6 Andy Curtis-Payne I initially qualified as a yoga teacher with BWY and Gill Lloyd became, and still is, my teacher. Through her I met Sri T.K.V.Desikachar and have followed his teachings to this day; it was his humility and compassion that inspired me and continues to do so. I soon realised that I wanted to teach in this tradition so took a four year practitioner program with Paul Harvey and graduated from that and began teaching yoga one to one and this remains a very significant part of my work. I also train new teachers and run workshops and courses all over the UK and have taught in India, Switzerland, Holland and Austria. I have a particular interest in the transformational qualities of the breath and chanting. 8 Cara Bowen Cara Bowen has been teaching yoga for 15 years, and involved in training yoga teachers since She trained as a BWY teacher with Peter Blackaby and teaches a creative and non-dogmatic approach to yoga inspired by Vanda Scaravelli and Mary Stewart. Her practice and teaching also draws on Insight Meditation, the Feldenkrais Method and a love of poetry. She is part of the London Yoga Teacher Training Group (LYTTG) founded by Chloe Fremantle, and is a co-director of the London Yoga Teacher Training Course. More flexible, responsive feet increase awareness of the ground beneath us, creating a deeper sense of support and connectedness. 9 Chalisa Yoga - Karen Jones, Siward and George Walker My Yoga path as a practitioner and teacher has been inspired by a wide gamut of styles including Sivananda, Scaraveli, Qigong and Yin Yoga. Teaching yoga since 2005(BWY DIP), my classes are a mindful synthesis of both static and flowing postures and sequences that ultimately cultivate healing and deep body/breath awareness. Yin yoga Session B Friday S Yin poses infused with sound, beautiful melodies, and heart melting mantra and bhajans to enhance the yoga practice and open the body to deep healing. 11 Heather Mason Heather Mason is a leader in the field of mindbody therapy and the founder of Yoga Therapy for the Mind. Heather develops innovative methods for mental health treatment drawing on her robust educational background including an MA in Psychotherapy, an MA in Buddhist Studies and an ongoing MSc in Neuroscience. She is also a 500 RYT, a yoga therapist and an MBCT facilitator. Heather develops protocols for different client populations by translating cutting edge research from the psycho-biology and neuro-biology of stress into yoga practices, breathwork, mindfulness interventions and therapeutic holding. She regularly writes and lectures on mind body therapy. When she isn t teaching and writing she loves to dance and sing! 12 James Boag James is known for his storytelling, his rich kirtans, deep meditations, principle-based approach to asana and for bringing the timeless wisdom of the traditional scriptural teachings vividly into the context of our lives today. He has been teaching for over twenty years, teaching yoga since 2004 and leading integrated programs on applied yoga philosophy around the world since He regularly returns to Mysore, South India where he completed his MA in Sanskrit and where he regularly leads courses on The Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutras and Indian Mythology. 13 Jenny Beeken Jenny Beeken studied with BKS Iyengar whose teaching is still a great source of inspiration, knowledge and understanding. Subsequent study with Victor Van Kooten and Angela Farmer has given her a deep understanding of the inner body, inner awareness and movement. More recently she has worked with Sophy Hoare and Diane Long to access the teaching of Vanda Scaravelli. This has further developed her understanding of the importance of waking the spine in yoga postures and in life. The emphasis in her teaching is on balance of the inner energies and healing oneself and others through yoga. Jenny is also the author of several books which set out the ideas and principles behind the teaching of the Inner Yoga Trust. 14 Kanga Yoga Emma Bonnici & Davin Jones Emma Bonnici, is the founder of Kanga Yoga, an international Yoga teacher and Ayurveda Therapist. She has been studying Yoga and Ayurveda for over 10 years. 15 Lisa Lister Crowned the defender of female awesomeness by Cooler magazine, Lisa Lister is a certified Hatha Vinyasa Yoga, Curvy Yoga and Womb Yoga teacher who loves yoga, but found that it didn t always suit her experience as a woman, so combined her study of Ayurveda, Yoga, Womb Wellness and Tantra to create SHE Flow Yoga; a moon and menstrual cycle-led practice that invites women to reconnect with their body wisdom and pleasure through fierce and feminine movement. 16 Lisa Sanfilippo Lisa Sanfilippo, BSc, MSc, RYT, is the UK s leading teacher of yoga for insomnia, with more than 15 years of experience and action research, 10 of which teaching yoga in the UK and internationally. Lisa has developed a range of workshops, classes and courses focused on insomnia, which have been offered at London s top yoga studios for nearly a decade. Her approach is uniquely holistic, moving from the most physical and bio-mechanic to the deepest understanding, on a mental, emotional and soullevel, why it is that we don t sleep and what we can do about it. Lisa s background includes intensive training in Anusara Yoga, including yoga therapeutics and extensive studies in Tantrick yoga philosophy. She has also studied the bodymind energetic systems with Anodea Judith, the world s foremost scholar and practitioner in yoga and the chakra system. 17 Mark Walsh - Integration Training Mark has been a practitioner of movements arts for twenty years, including several years as a full-time aikido student. His main yoga influences are Scaravelli, Yin and Buddhist inspired teachers. He has an honours degree in psychology. He founded and runs several organisations which bring embodiment into business, to aid workers and peace activists in war zones, and trains facilitators in around twenty countries annually. He has worked with everyone from the House of Lords, to Unilever, to the Sierra Leonian Army to Occupy; and yoga teachers of all major styles. His YouTube channel has over 8 Million hits and he s now getting self conscious boasting about himself in the third person so will leave it there. 18 Nick Edge As a born seeker the yoga I teach has a very meditative and reflective approach. This approach has been fundamentally inspired by my time at Mandala Yoga Ashram, where I completed my yoga teacher training, under the direction of Swami Nishchalananda. I have found the use of sound plays an important part in what I hope to share with others it can deepen our experience and open us up to the possibility of perceiving hidden aspects of our Being. And it is this inner voyage of discovery that is the very essence of Yoga. Yoga Nidra and the Sound of the Gong Session B Friday YN Yoga Nidra is a powerful and proven method designed to induce deep relaxation on the physical, mental and emotional levels of our being. The sound of the gong can add a whole new dimension to our practice of Yoga Nidra. With sound no effort is required the sound happens and we are simply aware of its effects as they arise. This is a session to come along and just enjoy a bit of self- nurturing. Gyana Yoga The Essence of Enquiry Session C Saturday M Gyana Yoga is the yoga of Insight and realisation. It can be mistaken for a path of thinking and the intellect this is not the case. It is a path of enquiry, of seeking knowledge and experience that is currently hidden from view. The session involves meditation, reflection and discussion using passages and quotes from various texts (yogic and non-yogic). Far from being a dry practice, Gyana yoga can be one of the most adventurous and exhilarating aspects of yoga. Pranayama The science of Energy Session E Saturday Pr Whilst obviously being centered around working with the breath, the aim of pranayama is to harmonize and liberate energy within the system. In doing so we can we feel more vital and balanced physically and mentally. At least as importantly pranayama can be a gateway to meditative states where we are more receptive to insight where the unknown can become known. Like all yoga practice, pranayama does not have to be complicated to be effective and we will work with a variety of practices including vitalizing, calming and balancing. 19 Norman Blair Norman began practicing yoga in the early 1990s and he has been teaching since His practice and teaching embrace both ashtanga yoga and yin yoga as well as mindfulness meditation. Through significant periods of training with teachers such as Hamish Hendry, Judith Lasater, Richard Freeman, Alaric Newcombe and Sarah Powers, he has gained the Yoga Alliance 500 hour accreditation. He believes that yoga is accessible to all of us and through regular practice we can experience profound changes in our mind and body. His own experience has taught him that yoga is an enjoyable way to release and make available energetic potential to enhance our lives. Yoga can help us to become more flexible, physically stronger and improve our stamina, focus and awareness. Yin Yoga Session F Sunday A Space to soften and room to relax: make space to soften and room to relax. This practice will be a gentle rebalancing of body and mind through the forms of Yin yoga (where the postures, all seated, are held for several minutes), pranayama and sitting meditation. We are continually given the choice between contraction and expansion, between closing and opening, between fear and love. Come along to this practice to expand, to open, to love. 19

20 Pauline Sawyer Pauline Sawyer Course Teacher Pauline Sawyer is one of the founders of the Inner Yoga Trust. She has practiced and taught yoga on an inner level since 1979 and took her Iyengar Elementary Certificate in May Her deep insight and understanding of the body and its link to the mind and spirit comes through her personal practice and extensive study of other disciplines. 24 Sarah Lionheart I am a reluctant yogi in that I did not choose yoga, it was taught to me to help me through the severe trauma of three months of captivity, rape and torture in an ashram in India back in the mid 80 s when I was 26. I went on to train and then teach at the request of my own teacher. I now teach mindfulness and compassion without religious dogma but I don t teach very much these days as I am busy singing, sailing the seas and having enormous amounts of fun. I have experience of PTSD and ME/CFS which impacts on how I teach and how I see the world. I tend to avoid being involved in organisations and religions - I have experienced the down sides of both. There are many styles of paths yoga yoga like hatha-yoga, kundalini yoga, tantra yoga, mantra yoga, bhakti yoga, nada yoga, etc. Raja-Yoga is highest among them for seekers aspiring for spiritual evolution. Raja Yoga is a path which includes tools on physical, mental, emotional, social, material and spiritual level for cleansing, growing and maintaining harmony and balance.
