J O S E P H P A R I S H, A P P L E T O N, W I Fr Jim s Jottings I recently read on the internet an article by a teacher regarding questions she would ask parents during the first week of school. Since we are about to begin another school year, I thought I d share those questions for our reflection. 1. What do you see as your child's greatest strengths or skills? 2. Tell me about a time when you saw your child demonstrating these skills. 3. Next June, what do you hope your child says about his/ her experience in school this year? 4. What's the story you hope he/she would tell? 5. What was your experience like in this grade? 6. How do you remember that year of school? 7. What are your fears or concerns about your child in this year of school? 8. Is there anything else you can tell me about your child that you think would help me support his/her learning? 9. Is there a question you hope I'll ask you about your child? Walk a Block for Our Lord As we anticipate the construction of the Exposition Center on the former County parking lot, we need to think about how it will affect our parking for Mass. The County parking lot will no longer be available so we need to think about walking a little further from the parking areas that are available to us. Here is some data: it s 96 steps from the Walnut St parking lot; 117 steps from Wells Fargo lot; 171 steps from the Court House parking lot; and 247 steps from the Midtown ramp. The average Packer fan walks 431 steps from their car to Lambeau Field for a game. We are certainly involved in something far greater at St Joe s than football, right? Flowers for Altar and the Blessed Mother Thanks to those who have brought flowers and placed them in front of the pulpit and altar. And thank you to those who continue to put flowers in the vases located in our Marian shrine. Thank you to everyone who came to our Pancake Breakfast in last weekend. Religion classes begin September 14 Children who attend public schools also attend religion classes on Wednesday evenings at St. Mary and St. Joseph. Two sessions are available, 4:30 5:40, or 6:30 to 7:40 pm. There will be a free hotdog supper on the first night of class at 5:30 in St. Mary Community Room. First Reconciliation: 2 nd grade children at St. Mary and St. Joseph are invited to participate in preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession). Parent meetings are Tuesday Sept. 20, 6:30 pm at St. Joseph, and Thursday, September 22, 6:30 pm at St. Mary. Parents from either parish may attend either meeting. Catechist In-Service Night Catechists are invited to attend our beginning of the year Catechist In-Service on Wednesday September 7 at 6 pm in Holly Hall. We invite parents, friends and young adults themselves to submit their school or military addresses before Sept. 20 to be added to our mailing list. If your address has not changed from last year, we will just move it to the new list for this year. Let us know! The Role of Deaconnesses in the Early Church Tuesday, September. 13, 6:30 PM, St. Joseph, Holly Hall with Dr. John Craghan, retired professor of religious studies from St. Norbert College. Intimate Graces - A Marriage Enrichment Evening- Monday, September 19 6:30 8:00 PM with Teresa Tomeo and her husband, Deacon Dom Pastore- St. Therese Church, 213 E. Wisconsin Ave. Teresa and Deacon Dom will share real life stories of struggle and growth in marriage. Using the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, they will give practical suggestions about how to foster deeper intimacy in any marriage and unpack how a husband and wife can become a haven of compassion and virtue for each other. WWDWWD (why we do what we do) For the next few months this article will appear in our weekly bulletin. It will look at what we do at St Joe s and, hopefully, offer an explanation that s especially helpful for our new members. How do we happen to have such beautiful grounds here at St Joe s? Well, it s because of some dedicated volunteers who plant, water and weed our gardens and planters all summer long. Scott Metz has put in lots of hours on the flowers on the west side of church as well as around the east parking lot. Mary Schulz and her crew have made the Solanus Casey garden especially vibrant and colorful. Bob Comerford has trimmed the bushes around the west parking lot and picks up the litter that blows in there. Someone said that St Joe s should receive the city s Beautification Award if such a thing exists. Wouldn t you agree??? FALL FESTIVAL BAKERS: Start looking for your favorite recipes. We are especially looking for pies (non-cream, which have a tendency to melt in the sun) for the Dinner on Saturday. Let us know if you can bring pies for our dinner. BASKET RAFFLE: Take a chance and buy a ticket or two for our Fabulous Baskets on display in the Great Hall. DINNER TICKETS: You have a choice of meals at our Fall Festival: Pulled Pork Sandwich or German Sausages, both with all the trimmings. PIE will be the dessert. If purchased prior to September 17 tickets are $10 per adult & $5 per child (Hot Dog Meal Available).
