Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church If you are a visitor, please know of our delight in having you in our midst. Join with us in the praise of God and at the Lord s Table. We have a practice of open communion inviting all baptized Christians to share in Holy Communion. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. If you are without a church home, please return and worship with us regularly. Children are always welcome in our worship. A quiet room is available at the back of the sanctuary if parents need a place to take their young children during the service. Please take a moment to complete your attendance slip, -- to be placed in the offering plate. Visitors, please provide your mailing address so we can acknowledge your presence. Members, please provide any updates or changes to your contact information. The Lord s Supper We believe that the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine in Holy Communion, and that through this gift we receive forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation. We invite you to come to the Lord s Table to receive this gift. Both wine (dark) and grape juice (light) are offered as well as gluten free wafers (please ask the Pastor for one at communion). Those unable to come forward should mention this to an usher so the pastor may serve you in your pew. Bring a Friend INVITE someone to worship with you. Being a disciple is important! Someone you know needs the Lord s power and a place to worship and serve. In your circle of influence, be an influence for Jesus Christ. Your invitation can change a life! JOIN US: Our CLC family of faith cordially invites to become a member (full, associate or seasonal). Become an integral part of our growing membership. Mark your attendance slip or call the office for more information Prayer Requests Prayer request cards are located in the pew racks. You may include someone in today s prayers, by speaking the name as prompted during that portion of the service. You may also fill out a blue prayer card and place it in the offering plate for a name to be included in the prayer team s weekly prayers and/or the Sunday Bulletin -- Or your request to our office at info@clchhi.com by Tuesday noon of that week. THE CONGREGATION IS INVITED TO RESPOND WHERE PRINT IS IN BOLD AND MARKED WITH A C Today s gospel combines a saying that makes many of us uncomfortable with a story we find comforting. Jesus saying on divorce is another of his rejections of human legislation in favor of the original intent of God s law. Jesus rebuke of the disciples who are fending off the children should challenge us as well. What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God as a child does? GATHERING SONGS Thy Word Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. When I feel afraid, Think I've lost my way, Still you're there right beside me. And nothing will I fear As long as you are near. Please be near me to the end. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. I will not forget Your love for me and yet My heart forever is wandering. Jesus be my guide, And hold me to your side, I will love you to the end. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. You unravel me, with a melody You surround me with a song Of deliverance, from my enemies Till all my fears are gone Chorus: I m no longer a slave to fear I am a child of God I m no longer a slave to fear I am a child of God No Longer Slaves From my mothers womb, You have chosen me Love has called my name I ve been born again, to your family Your blood flows through my veins Chorus x2
I am surrounded by the arms of the father I am surrounded by songs of deliverance We've been liberated from our bondage We re the sons and the daughters Let us sing our freedom Wo oh oh, oh, oh Wo oh oh, oh, oh Wo oh oh, oh, oh Wo oh oh, oh, oh Wo oh oh, oh, oh Wo oh oh, oh, oh You split the sea so I could walk right through it My fears were drowned in perfect love You rescued me and I will stand and sing I am a child of God You split the sea so I could walk right through it My fears were drowned in perfect love You rescued me and I will stand and sing I am a child of God (x6) Chorus WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS TEMPLE TALK Wayne Sebulsky CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (please stand as you are able) P Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whose Spirit we have been reborn to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. C AMEN P Rejoicing in Christ's victory over sin and death, let us come before God who calls us to repentance. Silence for reflection and self-examination P Gracious God, C you sent your son to die and rise to new life in order that death might be brought to an end and that we might live a new life in Him. Yet we confess that we too often have chosen to remain captive to doubt and fear and ways that lead to death. By our thoughts, words, and actions, we have scorned your love, diminished the lives of others, and defaced your image in us. Forgive us for Jesus sake, and enable us by His resurrection power to live no longer for ourselves but for Him who died and rose again for us. P Rejoice with all creation around God's throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores innocence to the fallen, casts out hate, brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C AMEN - 3 -

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY (said in unison) Sovereign God, you have created us to live in loving community with one another. Form us for life that is faithful and steadfast, and teach us to trust like little children, that we may reflect the image of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. AMEN FIRST READING: Genesis 2:18-24 Today s reading tells of the suffering of the prophet Jeremiah, who announced God s word to Judah but was met with intense opposition and persecution. Jeremiah continues to trust in God in the midst of his suffering. The LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner. So out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he PSALM 8 (read responsively) took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken. Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of infants and children; you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, what are mere mortals that you should be mindful of them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you have made them little less than divine; with glory and honor you crown them. You have made them rule over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet: all flocks and cattle, even the wild beasts of the field, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes along the paths of the sea. O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! - 6 -
SECOND READING: Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12 Quoting from the psalms, this passage from Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus, the one through whom God created everything and who sits at God s right hand, is also the one who experienced human suffering and death in order to blaze the path of salvation for us. Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God s glory and the exact imprint of God s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere, What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them? You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honor, subjecting all things under their THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (please stand as you are able) feet. Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. GOSPEL: Mark 10:2-16 Jesus announced and enacted in history the new reality of God s surprising activity. These two stories demonstrate this new reality: Women and children are accepted and valued, not dismissed as inferior to adult men
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 10 th chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. Some Pharisees came, and to test and marries another commits adultery [Jesus] they asked, Is it lawful for a against her; and if she divorces her man to divorce his wife? He answered husband and marries another, she them, What did Moses command you? commits adultery. They said, Moses allowed a man to People were bringing little children write a certificate of dismissal and to to him in order that he might touch divorce her. But Jesus said to them, them; and the disciples spoke sternly to Because of your hardness of heart he them. But when Jesus saw this, he was wrote this commandment for you. But indignant and said to them, Let the from the beginning of creation, God little children come to me; do not stop made them male and female. For this them; for it is to such as these that the reason a man shall leave his father and kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell mother and be joined to his wife, and the you, whoever does not receive the two shall become one flesh. So, they are kingdom of God as a little child will no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore never enter it. And he took them up in what God has joined together, let no one his arms, laid his hands on them, and separate. blessed them. Then in the house the disciples P The Gospel of the Lord asked him again about this matter. 10 THE APOSTLES CREED (said in unison) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P Drawn to the light of Christ, made bold in the waters of baptism, and filled with the Spirit, we lift up our prayers in confidence that God loves us and listens to us SUNG PRAYER RESPONSE After each portion of the prayers: P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. (REPEAT SUNG PRAYER RESPONSE BEFORE FINAL PRAYER) P Good and gracious God, we ask all these things and whatever else you see that we need with a sure and certain hope in your goodness and mercy, through Jesus Christ our Savior. C AMEN. THE PEACE (We may greet one another in the name of the Lord) P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you
THE RETURNING OF GIFTS (please be seated) THE RETURNING RESPONSE (please stand as you are able) THE RETURNING PRAYER (said in unison) Merciful God, everything in heaven and earth belongs to you. We joyfully release what you have entrusted to us. May these gifts be signs of our whole lives returned to you, dedicated to the healing and unity of all creation, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. AMEN. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. C and also with you. P Lift up your hearts C We lift them to you, Lord P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God C It is right to praise you, Lord. P As we come again to this table, we recall the story. It was a night of celebration and also betrayal, when Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying, "When you eat this bread, and remember me, you become one in my body." In the same way, he took the cup after supper saying, "My very lifeblood will be poured out. But when you drink this cup, and remember me, I will be in you." C Come, Holy Spirit, Come. P Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking, that our eyes might be opened, that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. C AMEN
THE LORD S PRAYER (said in unison) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. AMEN. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P The gifts of God for the people of God. C AMEN. (please be seated) THE DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION All baptized persons who believe in the real presence of Christ in our Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins are welcomed to commune. The elements will be received by Intinction. You will receive the Host from the Pastor; move to the chalice bearer to dip a portion of the Host in the wine. Grape juice is available as an alternative to the wine in the second chalice. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Great Redeemer Not Guilty Anymore It doesn t matter what you ve done, It doesn t matter where you re coming from. Doesn t matter where you ve been, Hear me tell you, I forgive. Chorus:* You re not guilty anymore You re not filthy anymore, I love you, mercy is yours. You re not broken anymore, you re not captive anymore, I love you, mercy is yours

Take up your cross and follow me, and follow me. Verse 2: The call is hard to swallow: Take up your cross and follow; the words reach deep inside of me. He helped Lutheran churches make the transition from the state churches of Europe to a new identity on American soil. Among other things, he established the first Lutheran synod in America and developed an American Lutheran liturgy. His liturgical principles became the basis for the Common Service of 1888, used in many North American service books for a majority of the past century. That Muhlenberg and his work are remembered today was anticipated at his death. The inscription on his grave reads, in Latin, Who and what he was, future ages will know without a stone
