2 Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church If you are a visitor, please know of our delight in having you in our midst. Join with us in the praise of God and at the Lord s Table. We have a practice of open communion inviting all baptized Christians to share in Holy Communion. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. If you are without a church home, please return and worship with us regularly. Children are always welcome in our worship. A quiet room is available at the back of the sanctuary if parents need a place to take their young children during the service. The Lord s Supper We believe that the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine in Holy Communion, and that through this gift we receive forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation. We invite you to come to the Lord s Table to receive this gift. Both wine (dark) and grape juice (light) are offered as well as gluten free wafers (please ask the Pastor for one at communion). Those unable to come forward should mention this to an usher so the pastor may serve you in your pew. Bring a Friend INVITE someone to worship with you. Being a disciple is important! Groups of eight people (three couples and two singles) meet in each other s homes three times during the year. (The singles are not asked to host a dinner.) The group chooses a mutually agreeable time. The host couple prepares the entree and asks the others to bring side dishes and dessert. If one of the couples is not able to host a meal in their home, they can plan a Dutch-treat meal out. On this day we celebrate the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles that is, to all nations. Some Christian traditions celebrate three great epiphanies on this day: the magi s adoration of the Christ child, Jesus baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle, in which he changes water into wine. The word and sacraments are for us the great epiphany of God s grace and mercy. We go forth to witness to the light that shines brightly in our midst. 5 THE PRAYER OF THE DAY (said in unison) O God, on this day you revealed your Son to the nations by the leading of a star. Lead us now by faith to know your presence in our lives, and bring us at last to the full vision of your glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. (please be seated) FIRST READING: Isaiah 60:1-6 Jerusalem is assured that nations will make a pilgrimage to her, because the light of God s presence is in her midst. The bountiful food of the sea and the profits of international trade will come streaming to Jerusalem and thereby declare God s praise. Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses arms. Then you shall see RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 72:1-7, (read responsively) and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. SECOND READING: Ephesians 3:1-12 What had been hidden from previous generations is now made known through the gospel ministry of Paul and others. In Christ both Jews and Gentiles participate in the richness of God s promised salvation. This is the reason that I, Paul, am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God s grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God s THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (please stand as you are able) grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. 7 * GOSPEL: Matthew 2:1-12 God s promise shines bright in the night as magi follow a star to honor a new king. Strangers from a faraway land, they welcome the long-awaited messiah of Israel. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 8 THE NICENE CREED (said in unison) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. It was a night of celebration and also betrayal, when Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying, "When you eat this bread, and remember me, you become one in my body." In the same way, he took the cup after supper saying, "My very lifeblood will be poured out. But when you drink this cup, and remember me, I will be in you." C Come, Holy Spirit, Come. P Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking, that our eyes might be opened, that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. C AMEN. C AMEN (please be seated) THE DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION All baptized persons who believe in the real presence of Christ in our Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins are welcomed to commune. The elements will be received by Intinction. You will receive the Host from the Pastor; move to the chalice bearer to dip a portion of the Host in the wine. Grape juice is available as an alternative to the wine in the second chalice. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. If you prefer to receive the bread from the Pastor, please move to that side of the aisle. If you choose, you may kneel at the rail for a moment of prayer and meditation after receiving the elements

15 A UNIQUE MOVIE NIGHT IS PLANNED FOR WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30 The CONNECTED Planning Team and Social Ministry Team invite you To a conversation about the important topics of Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease Memory Matters will be with us for a short presentation and to answer a few questions after we watch the movie "Still Alice." We believe we all know at least one person in our lives who has touched and changed us while we watched them losing their grip on reality. We will offer a light pizza and salad supper -- So we can plan for food, please mark your attendance slip to let us know of your plans to attend. Also, you may indicate your need for transportation. Please join us on Wednesday, January 30 at 5:00 p.m. in Heinrichs Hall! each passing day Still Alice -- Dr. Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) is a renowned linguistics professor at Columbia University. When words begin to escape her and she starts becoming lost on her daily jogs, Alice must come face-to-face with a devastating diagnosis: early-onset Alzheimer's disease. As the once-vibrant woman struggles to hang on to her sense of self for as long as possible, Alice's three grown children must watch helplessly as their mother disappears more and more with MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES MY NAME IS AND MY MINISTRY IS... ST. JAMES SOUP KITCHEN: CLC is called to mission at the soup kitchen EVERY THURSDAY of the month! Why not come by and offer your hands in service on a Thursday? 16 BACK PACK BUDDIES: This ongoing program under The Hunger Coalition provides nutritious food to 250 children at three elementary schools for the weekend. We partner with Hilton Head Elementary and it takes many volunteers to make it work! We will be: Setting up food at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9 Packing backpacks at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10 (in Heinrichs Hall) Interested in helping out? Please give me a call or to discuss what you can do. Let's keep the pantry shelves as full as possible throughout the month as the food demand remains high. Let's keep to basics as we look in our pantries or go shopping for our donations.
