This week our overall attendance was 95% Please ensure you make every effort to ensure your child gets to school every day to help us achieve our target. Class Reception1 Reception2 Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 Attendance 100% 98% 96% 92% 97% 95% 96% 91% Poor punctuality means your child misses valuable learning time and that lessons are disrupted for all other pupils. Please make sure that your children are in the yard by 8.45am every day. HAPPY ST PATRICKS DAY St Patrick's Day is a global celebration of Irish culture on or around March 17. It particularly remembers St Patrick, one of Ireland's patron saints, who ministered Christianity in Ireland during the fifth century. St Patrick's Day is celebrated in countries with people of Irish decent. Dear Parents, Grandparents & Parishioners The Lenten term is quickly drawing to a close and we have so much to look forward to. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rain we have had to postpone next week s annual sponsored Fun Run. The wet field and cold conditions certainly would spoil this event. I have therefore taken the decision to reschedule the Fun Run to Tuesday 17 th April. This year, we will divide monies raised between our chosen school charities which include CAFOD and Zambia benefitting from this. The Fun Run will begin at 10am and gates will be open to parents wanting to take part or watch. We normally ask the children to see how many laps they can do in approximately 15 minutes. We again ask that children bring in a spare pair of shoes or trainers on the day. This is a non-uniform event and we hope you will all support this Lenten tradition straight after the holiday. On the theme of Lent, we look forward to our Penny Challenge, which takes place on Monday 26th March at 9.40 a.m. The challenge has always been a success and we continue to ask everyone to send in any spare change available for this event. On the same day, we will also be holding a Lenten Celebration in the school hall at 9.05am. If parents wish to attend, they are welcome. As always we will be holding our annual Easter Egg competition on the last day of term, with special prizes donated by the Friends; time to start thinking about what your decorated egg will be. Eggs can be dropped off from 8.30am (or Breakfast Club earlier), Parents can view from 8.50am and children can attend from 9.05am. The eggs will be judged by a special guest at 9.15 am and winners will be chosen. Today, we have the first of four exciting class trips taking place over the next 6 days. Please make sure that you have consented for your child s trip or they may not be allowed to board the bus. All parental contributions are hugely valued and we certainly could not fund the trips without your help. Parent Governors: I wrote to you a couple of weeks ago to invite interest for the vacancy for a parent governor. I am delighted to say that there has been a good response and there are three parents registering their interest for the vacancy. Nomination packs will be ed to them tonight with a deadline of Friday 23rd March. Once they are returned it means we must hold a ballot. Ballot packs will be sent home with the eldest child on Friday 20th April and must be returned by 12noon on Friday 27th April. Finally, please can I ask that parents park sensibly at home time. Parents are still parking outside of school and around the noparking signed areas. This creates a risk of accidents occurring with children. Drivers need to be able to turn in and out of the car parked areas. Please don t be lazy. If there are no spaces, then please park down the hill or use Byermoor estate and walk the short distance to school to collect your child. Let's all work together to keep our school safe; we are lucky to have so much parking compared to other schools.
2 NEWS STM Challenge Morning: Five Year 6 children had a great time on Thursday as they went to St Thomas More for a challenge morning in Numeracy and Literacy. In Literacy, they completed activities in poetry and personification. In Numeracy, they completed word and logic problems. This also gave them the opportunity to meet some of the teachers, which they really enjoyed. Well done. Maths Challenge: Well done to the four Year 5 children who attended the Newcastle High School for Girls on Wednesday for a Maths Challenge. The children were put into pairs and had a variety of Maths challenges to complete in the morning, followed by a Maths investigation around the grounds of the school. The children had a great time and finished in 7th and 9th place of 23 teams altogether. Well done. Eco Council: Yesterday lunch time, Eco- Council sacrificed some of their time to begin our BIG CLEAN UP. We took our litter pickers and bin bags out to the blustery field and yard to make a start on the rubbish that litters our play area. We hope to continue with this in the coming weeks. If any parents or carers would like to help in the big clean up and have their own appropriate equipment we could use, please get in touch via Miss O'Keeffe in the office. Hopefully, we will be able to organise another date when adults can come in and help us out. Great work so far team, well done. St Patricks Day Meal: The children enjoyed a delicious St Patrick s Day meal on Thursday, complete with shamrock biscuits! A big thank you to all the kitchen staff. London Trip: It is not long now until our School Council will venture to Buckingham Palace, Downing Street and of course to Parliament. The trip takes place on Tuesday 27 th March, and the children are all very excited. E-Safety: This week, Year 6 looked into the safety and reliability of different websites. We discussed how to tell if a website is trustworthy and how we could check if the information is dependable. Competition Winner: A Year 2 child has won runner-up in the Vision for Education Easter writing competition! Sarah, from Vision will be coming into next Friday s assembly to announce the lucky winner. Year 1 Liturgy: The Year 1 children have been working hard within their RE topic 'Meals' to learn about the events of Holy Week, and why Easter is an important celebration. We learnt some action songs, sign language and even re-enacted The Last Supper. Our role-play photographs, video clips of the Gospel, Lenten promises and songs were shared with parents and families during the Liturgy on Thursday. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and for the lovely comments and feedback. Yes, we do agree with you, their behaviour, singing and understanding of the Easter Story were all fantastic and helped to create a beautiful, prayerful atmosphere. Well done, Year 1. Reception Trip: Reception 1 and 2 have had a fantastic day at the Hancock Museum today, exploring and learning all about the different types of dinosaurs. We would definitely love to visit again.
3 MEMOS AND REMINDERS Lenten Penny Challenge: It is that time again where we ask everyone to start collecting pennies in classes for our Annual Lenten Penny Challenge. This has raised well over a thousand pounds over the years we have taken part, and all money has directly supported our Zambian Friends at the Belauni Special Street School. 80 children have now been granted an education since we started this sponsorship project. Please start sending in pennies - every little counts. The Penny Challenge will take place on Monday 26th March at 10am. Mobile Phones: I am well aware that mobile phones are part of the world we live in and serve as a very useful communication tool. However due to safeguarding issues, OFSTED make it clear to schools that no parent/visitor on the school yard or site should not have a mobile phone out when children are present. I have noticed a few parents using phones or checking texts of late. Please can I ask that you keep mobile phones out of sight until off the school yard or out of the school building (this includes the office area). Staff will not release any children from the line to parents who are distracted on their phones or who do not come over to make contact with the teacher and collect their child. Clubs Pick Up: Please can I remind parents to wait outside the front door when collecting children from after school clubs. The main Reception is a small, congested area and should not be used for waiting. Children will be brought through the main Reception by a member of staff to the front door, where parents will then sign the child out of the relevant club. If your child is in Heart Zone, please ring the main bell and the office staff will buzz you through. Trips: We look forward to children having wonderful experiences on school visits. However, if parents do not consent then the children will not be allowed to board coaches. Consent is given through Parent Pay or by contacting Mr Naughton. WEEKLY ASSEMBLY AWARDS Brilliant Manners Olivia B (Y4) Mathematicians of the Week Alex (Y4) Little Hearts Star of the Week- Holly A Writers of the Week Theo (Y4) Mrs Knox s Award Grace D (Y5) Head Teachers Award- Isla and Reuben (R) Pupils of the Week Karley (R), Hope (Y1), Maya (Y2), John (Y3), Jay (Y4), Lily (Y5), Ava (Y6) Taken from the Gospel for Sunday 18th March 2018 (John 12:20-30): Exaltation through Suffering Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. These approached Philip, who came from Bethsaida in Galilee, and put this request to him, Sir, we should like to see Jesus. Philip went to tell Andrew, and Andrew and Philip together went to tell Jesus. Jesus replied to them: Now the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you, most solemnly, unless a wheat grain falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Anyone who loves his life loses it; anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it for the eternal life. If a man serves me, he must follow me; wherever I am, my servant will be there too. If anyone serves me, my Father will honour him. Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say: Father, save me from this hour? But it was for this very reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name! A voice came from heaven, I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. People standing by, who heard this, said it was a clap of thunder; others said, It was an angel speaking to him. Jesus answered, It was not for my sake that this voice came, but for yours. Now sentence is being passed on this world; now the prince of this world is to be overthrown. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all men to myself. By these words he indicated the kind of death he would die.
