1 Grace Lutheran Church 108 W. SOMO AVENUE TOMAHAWK, WISCONSIN Who Is My Neighbor? Wednesdays Lent Worship 1:00 and 7:00 PM This theme, book, video and schedule for our Wednesday 1:00 and 7:00 worship can be downloaded from the Grace website. Or go directly to Steve Moore s book, based on the Gospel of Luke, was presented at the Third Lausanne Global Congress on World Evangelization in Our own Clay Schmit was in charge of the worship at that event on behalf of Fuller Seminary where he was teaching at that time (previous congresses were held in 1974 and 1989). Join us! This book, videos, and theme will lead you deep into Jesus parable on the Good Samaritan. Holy Week Holy Week is the high point of our worship. This week is totally focused on God s great exchange Jesus taking our sin and human limitations and giving us God s eternal life and salvation. Palm Sunday is the beginning of this week as we celebrate Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem as Messiah, Savior, Lord, and King, and the surprising twist Jesus gives to the notion of King. Maundy Thursday literally means commandment Thursday Jesus giving us a new commandment in the Lord s Supper that we are to love others as God loves us. Marks the end of Lent by receiving individual absolution. Begins a three day worship of Jesus death and resurrection (there is no benediction, greeting, or dismissal on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday since it is all one worship service that does not end until Easter Sunday). Good Friday is good because of God s act of love and salvation in God dying for us. Easter Sunday is the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. As Jesus is raised so we shall be also. Palm Sunday March 23 & 24 5:00 pm Saturday 8:30 and 10:45 am Sunday Maundy Thursday March 28 1:00 and 7:00 pm Good Friday March 29 1:00 and 7:00 pm Easter Sunday March 31 6:30, 8:30, and 10:45 am Sunday (no Saturday Service) March 2013 Regular Weekly Worship Services Saturday 5:00 pm - Sunday 8:30 & 10:45 am Contemporary Worship 2nd & 4th Sundays at 8:30 am

2 Thank you from Pastor Karla I would like to thank you for the many ways you have welcomed me to Grace! Your comments, such as, We re so glad you are here! and It s so good to have you with us! have warmed my heart over and over again. I would also like to thank you for your kind expressions of sympathy upon the death of my Aunt Nina. Your concern has been a comfort. Although I am scheduled to begin officially on March 1, it won t be until March 7, as my aunt s memorial will be held in Worthington, MN on March 6 and I will be officiating at the service. I ask for your continued prayers. I look forward to settling in to a regular schedule at Grace, which means that I will be with you on a more consistent basis and that will afford opportunities to get to know you better and to be in ministry with you. I thank God for bringing us together! Pastor Karla Easter Breakfast The traditional Easter Breakfast will be held again this year! We encourage you to dress up for this meal, which is in your honor, and please bring a dish to pass. 3 A WORD FROM PASTOR KARLA I am delighted to join the ministry team at Grace! I ve always been welcomed so warmly whenever I ve worshipped with you and am looking forward to getting to know you better in the months ahead. I will start officially on Friday, March 7. In the meantime I will be assisting Pastor Mark with preaching and presiding at worship services. You will also see me at some of the Lenten services during February. I am still serving as chaplain at LSS Homme Youth and Family Programs in Wittenberg; however, the reduction in my hours there is allowing me to partner with you in ministry at Grace. I will be the contract supply pastor (20 hours per week), with office hours here Thursdays Saturdays and two Sundays a month, as well as some Wednesday afternoons. Worthington, MN is my hometown, where I still have family. I attended schools there. I graduated from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD, with a double major in German and Religion and from Luther Seminary with an M. Div. Degree I first served as Parish Deaconess ( Sister Karla) at Augustana in St. James, MN, and was then ordained to the ministry of word and sacrament and became Pastor Karla in I ve also served parishes in Babbitt, MN and Hawarden, IA. I was chaplain at Bremwood Lutheran Children s Home in Waverly, IA before coming to LSS Homme, where I have served for the past eleven years. Being a CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) resident at Rochester Methodist Hospital, Rochester, MN and again at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN, provided me with excellent training for ministry with the ill and dying and those in crisis situations. During those two years, I was fortunate to be able to live in community with the Franciscan sisters in Rochester and the School Sisters of Notre Dame in St. Paul. I enjoy reading and traveling and have a passion for history, especially the Civil War and World War II. I also have strong connections to Crailsheim, Germany, where I was an exchange student during my junior year in high school. Freya and Flossy are my two cats who are delightful companions. They make me laugh and help me keep things in perspective. Please feel free to stop by my office! I welcome your company! Blessings to you! Pastor Karla STAFF (715 area codes) Pastor.Rev. 4 ABUNDANT THANKS! A Huge Thank You to the MANY people who made Grace s D3 (Driving Down the Debt) Dinner & Auction a tremendous success: Despite the difficult weather, we had a wonderful turnout of people who were - welcomed by terrific decorations thoughtfully prepared by Corky Burcalow, - treated to a delicious dinner especially prepared by Patti Hilgendorf and Cathy Schmit, - graciously served by our young people and our young-at-heart, - and, entertained by our auctioneer Arnie Lange and his brother Everett, who served as our emcee. Whether you came and enjoyed dinner, helped set up and decorate, cook, serve, clean up, assist with the auction, etc., shared a pan of your delicious bars, shared some of your many talents, donated one of the nearly ninety auction items, bid on auction items or contributed to the drawings, or any combination of the above, we thank you wholeheartedly! The generosity of so many people was truly overwhelming. Our mission was to offer the people of Grace an opportunity for fun and fellowship while raising money for our beautiful building. There is no doubt that together we accomplished that mission! This event helped to raise over $7,300 that will be applied to our loan. We couldn t have done this without the help of MANY people. 7 From the Stewardship Committee Hit the Road! That day of the Resurrection, two friends were walking along the road to Emmaus. They didn t know, though, that it was Resurrection Day. That s why they were walking along with downcast faces. Along comes Jesus. Hi, He says, What s up? What are you talking about? Don t you know? they ask incredulously. Where have you been? Under a rock? We re talking about Jesus. He s dead. We counted on Him for everything, but our hope is gone. He s dead. No, no, no, Jesus responds. Haven t you read your Bible? Don t you know this was all planned out before the world began? And He starts at the beginning and patiently explains the prophecies of Scripture and how they have been fulfilled in the past few days. Finally, as they eat together, as Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and gives it to them, their eyes are opened. Can t you imagine? Their eyes are wide open. It s safe to say their mouths were probably hanging open, too, as Jesus disappeared from their vision from their physical sight, but not from their hearts and minds, and they return to Jerusalem with a new message: The Lord has risen indeed (Luke 24:34). We have our opportunities, too, to explain Scripture to the downcast, the bewildered, the confused. We can come alongside our friends on their road to Emmaus and ask, Hey, what s up? Many people, even those who claim to be Christian, still base their beliefs on what they think, what they conceive to be logical, and what others have said. Like Jesus, we can turn their thoughts to Scripture. We can invite them to church where they might receive Christ s body and blood and have their spiritual eyes opened. We have opportunities, also, to give our money to support pastors, teachers, and missionaries as they preach and teach the Risen Christ. As we use the resources and gifts God has given us to further His Kingdom, the Holy Spirit will cause the sure hope of salvation to cause the hearts of many to burn within [them] (Luke 24:32). March Special Offering NATH (Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing) (The following article was submitted by Tammy Modic, Executive Director) Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing (NATH) celebrates two years of operations for Frederick Place It is so hard to believe and so wonderful at the same time to realize that NATH has celebrated two years of Frederick Place an emergency, temporary homeless shelter located in Rhinelander being open. As I continue to travel the five county areas that we serve to do speaking engagements, I continue to marvel at the generosity and warm welcomes I receive from individuals. Frederick Place has been home for 211 individuals (113 males, 70 females, and 28 children). Our youngest resident was seven months old and we have had two individuals 62 years of age and over. We have had residents from all five counties (120 Oneida; 27 Vilas; 24 Lincoln; 14 Langlade; 7 Forest; and nineteen who did not sleep in any one of these counties the night before coming to Frederick Place). For every night that a resident stays at Frederick Place, we get a shelter night ; we have had just over 8,000 shelter nights since opening our doors. We have also provided shelter for thirteen veterans. The communities we serve continue to wrap themselves around Frederick Place. We have had 3,051 documented volunteer hours and 316+ evening meals donated. One of the rewarding experiences that continue to happen is that former residents are now beginning to give back to Frederick Place. They have given back in the form of developing and maintaining our website, helping at a fund raising event, and providing support staff hours in the house. I would like to thank each and every one of you personally for your support, dedication, donations, well wishes, and guidance. As the Executive Director, I may be the Face of Frederick Place, but I do not do it alone. I have had the same team of staff working in the house since we opened our doors. Becca, Susan, Jodi, Jessie, and Gloria have been the team that keeps the house running. They each provide residents with different experiences and support. Did you know? Grace Lutheran has an online calendar! 1. Go to our website: 2. Scroll down and on the right hand side under Links you will see Church Calendar. We do our best to keep this calendar accurate and up to date at all times. 7

Those of us who attended the Wednesday Evening Service were touched and inspired by the youth participation and great attendance by families of all ages. Next was the Passing of the Council Binders from those who have finished their terms of office and gave us the opportunity to say thank you to Jean Huntoon, Patti Gaedtke and Sam Bourassa for their service to Grace. 9 (Continued from page 8) Council Minutes Heather Engel reported she would like start to publicize the 2015 National Youth Convention to be held in Detroit so that families can sign up early and save registration fees. Pastor Mark announced that the Long Range Planning Committee has been going over the feedback from the opening session held before the Annual Meeting. Forest Gibeault has started to compile and sort the information and is getting ready to analyze the responses and LRPC will be sharing this information with the congregation. 10 Thank you to all who participated in our first open forum to begin to gather congregational input on Grace s future direction. The feedback we received was valuable and helpful. Following is a sample of the replies: 1) Some of the areas identified as positive about our current ministries at Grace included the friendliness of the congregation and willingness to offer support and respond to needs; the PPP Guys; Sunday School and kids presentations in church; Confirmation; Adult Bible Study; Milestone Ministries; fellowship time; outreach in community; cross-generational South Africa travelers; great secretaries and pastor; Wilderness trips; Camp and NYG opportunities; Outdoor Worship; projection in worship; music (Contemporary Choir, Cantata, Bell Choir); CIA; and Memory Tree, to name some. 2) Areas needing support/resources/attention included communication and coordination among ministries, clear and accountable delegation of job duties (both are topics on the agenda for the Leadership Retreat on April 6); fix up the youth room; more youth lock-ins; more service in the community; and service trips. If we do have two pastors, one needs to be the senior pastor; importance of visitation; more focus on Grace and Tomahawk; and the need for a youth director/facilitator/coordinator. The purpose of the Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) is to enrich the ministry of Grace by envisioning its future and by actively looking for ways to enhance the effectiveness of the image, program, building, organization, and relationships of this congregation. The LRPC has been asked by the Church Council to assist in identifying our needs and to suggest what resources would be necessary to support those needs. In order to fulfill these assignments, we want to give the congregation ample opportunity to address our needs. Follow up Meeting to Discuss Grace s Future March 10 at 9:45 am Fellowship Hall As promised, to allow more time for discussion of our needs, a follow-up meeting is scheduled for Sunday, March 10, at 9:45 am in the Fellowship Hall. At this meeting the Long Range Planning Committee will: 1) Summarize the input from the brief session that preceded the annual meeting. 2) Explain some of the staffing possibilities, as discussed with Pastor Joy Mortensen-Wiebe, Associate with the Bishop of our Synod. 3) Seek additional input to help determine our future staffing needs. We invite the congregation to come and share your thoughts. This input will be taken into consideration to develop staffing recommendations. The format of this meeting will be a large group setting to allow for conversation, rather than the small group process used to collect initial thoughts at the previous meeting. If you can t make the meeting but have something to share, please contact a member of the Long Range Planning Committee: Steve Heikkinen, Sherry Clements, Dale Elliott, Mindy Gabrich, Patti Gaedtke, Forrest Gibeault, John Kromm, Judy Schlinkmann, Karen Torkelson 10

11 Leadership Retreat to Support Grace s Future April 6 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in Fellowship Hall To begin implementing what we hear and discern, this year s Leadership Retreat will be Saturday, April 6, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. At this meeting, a group working with the Long Range Planning Committee will: 1) Summarize the input from the March 10 th meeting and how this process of congregational listening and discerning can be instilled into the life of Grace Lutheran. 2) Explain the ELCA s request and resources for congregations to begin, develop, review, or redefine their unique mission plans, and Pastor Joy Mortensen-Wiebe s assistance with this as both Associate with the Bishop of our Synod and our Synod s Director of Evangelical Mission. 3) Guide participants in this retreat to begin structuring a process that addresses the areas of Grace s life needing support/resources/attention as identified at the first open forum including coordination of ministries; clarifying responsibilities and accountability across the organization; and communication among ministry areas as well as with the congregation. They learned that over 2,000 youth and adults are helped each year by this organization. Donated items were brought from our Grace congregation and from the students themselves. The young people roleplayed the process the volunteers go through to serve people and had the interesting jobs of checking dates and stacking the donated food. Grace adults learning right along with the class were Patti Gaedtke, Brenda Marcks, Bill Sparr, and Mark Von Schrader. A visit to Krueger Funeral is being planned for April. Bill Sparr 14
