1 First Presbyterian Church For Christ in the Heart of Charlotte Founded in 1821 Order of Worship December 24, a.m. Fourth Sunday of Advent You are invited to use the time before the service to prepare your heart and mind for worship. In consideration of others, please silence your cell phones. Preparation Prelude Words of Welcome Lighting of the Advent Candle Selected Christmas Carols Adoration The Reverend Pen Peery Noah, Haley, Charles and Gentry Allen One: There is no fear in love, for perfect love casts out fear. God s love pervades all aspects of this life. All: From birth to death, pain to delight, strangers to neighbors, God s love is there. One: We light this candle in love. All: On this day, we remember that God is love. *Hymn No. 143 Angels, from the Realms of Glory regent square
2 Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Confession The Reverend Erika Funk All: Merciful God, in Jesus Christ you have come to us as the savior of the world. We confess that too often we have had no room for you. Our lives are crowded, and there is simply too little time for the Christ. Forgive the busyness in our lives that masks our fears and doubts. Cleanse us from our sins that we may gladly receive the one who is the light of the world. One: In silent prayer, let us confess to God the things we choose not to speak aloud. A time of silence will be kept. *Response (Hymn No. 121, stanza 4) st. louis O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us; abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! Assurance of Pardon One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 113, refrain) Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo! Proclamation gloria This is the irrational season when love blooms bright and wild. Had Mary been filled with reason there d have been no room for the child. -Madeleine L Engle, from The Weather of the Heart Scripture Matthew 1:18-25 pew Bible pg. 1 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Anthem Hodie Christus natus est Andrew Carter Hodie Christus natus est; born is a king forever blessed. Welcome we now our heavenly guest; sing alleluya! Loud we give praise this day of days; Long may we sing our God and King: Light of life, Lord of lords. Time With Children Children in kindergarten through 2nd grade may leave for First Church. They will return to the sanctuary during the last hymn. Younger children may go to the nursery. Scripture Luke 1:26-38 pew Bible pg. 56 Sermon Yes The Reverend Pen Peery *Hymn No. 145 What Child Is This greensleeves The 11 a.m. service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9, this morning and streamed live at
3 *Affirmation of Faith The Reverend Katelyn Gordon Cooke Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of the People Stewardship of Life Presentation of Tithes and Offering Response Offertory Anthem Candlelight Carol John Rutter How do you capture the wind on the water? How do you count all the stars in the sky? How can you measure the love of a mother, or how can you write down a baby s first cry? Candlelight, angel light, firelight and star-glow shine on his cradle till breaking of dawn. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Angels are singing: the Christ child is born. Shepherds and wise men will kneel and adore him; seraphim round him their vigil will keep. Nations proclaim him their Lord and their Savior, but Mary will hold him and sing him to sleep. Find him at Bethlehem laid in a manger: Christ our redeemer asleep in the hay. God-head incarnate and hope of salvation: a child with his mother that first Christmas day. *Doxology regent square All creation, join in praising God the Father, Spirit, Son, Evermore your voices raising to the eternal Three in One: Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King! *Prayer of Dedication and The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Sending Forth *Hymn No. 134 Joy to the World antioch *Charge and Benediction *Benediction Response Of the Father s Love Begotten divinum mysterium Postlude In dulci jubilo Johann Sebastian Bach A time of personal prayer is offered following both services. If you would like to pray with a pastor and a member of our prayer team, please meet them in the sanctuary overflow area after the 9 a.m. service or in the chapel following the 11 a.m. service. * Please stand if you are able.

5 *Hymn No Angels, from the realms of glory, wing your flight o er all the earth; you, who sang creation s story, now proclaim Messiah s birth: 2 Shepherds, in the fields abiding, watching o er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing; yonder shines the infant light: Angels, from the Realms of Glory 3 Sages, leave your contemplations; brighter visions beam afar; seek the great desire of nations; you have seen his natal star: 4 All creation, join in praising God the Father, Spirit, Son, evermore your voices raising to the eternal Three in One: *Hymn No. 145 What Child Is This 1 What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing; haste, haste to bring him laud, 3 So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; come, one and all, to own him. The King of kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone him. Raise, raise the song on high. The virgin sings her lullaby. Joy, joy, for Christ is born, 2 Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear; for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear, shall pierce him through; the cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail, the Word made flesh, *Hymn No. 134 Joy to the World 1 Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her king; let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing. 2 Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let all their songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy. 3 No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground; he comes to make his blessings flow far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found, far as, far as the curse is found. 4 He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love.
