4 St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, July 22, 2018 A WORD FROM THE DEACON HOW TO DISAGREE IN A CHRISTIAN WAY Saint Ignatius offered five principles for dialogue that continue to be good advice for our times (Pope Francis has modeled these on multiple occasions): BE SLOW TO SPEAK. In difficult conversations, especially when we feel hurt or angry, it may be tempting to react out of frustration, but we gain greater understanding of others and of the conversation if we are present with kindness and consideration before we share our own perspective. LISTEN ATTENTIVELY. People are more than their beliefs or convictions about a particular issue. Being fully present to others as whole persons allows us to understand their meaning, leanings and wishes. Genuine dialogue is predicated on sincere openness and lowering our defenses. Sometimes we may need to expand or alter our perceptions in order to understand what is being communicated. SEEK THE TRUTH IN WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING. None of us is the keeper of truth, and dialogue provides an opportunity to learn. Every difficult conversation holds the potential to expand our understanding about the topic, about others, and about ourselves, but only if we are open to this teaching, to finding truths in unexpected places and to finding common ground. DISAGREE HUMBLY, RESPECTFULLY, AND THOUGHTFULLY. St. Ignatius advised listening closely to all sides in order to hear beyond our own biases and being humble even when we are certain. ALLOW THE DIALOGUE THE TIME IT NEEDS. Resolution is not always readily apparent or feasible, and some conversations provide more questions before they provide answers. WE WANT YOUR CANS! Our Knights of Columbus are collecting all cans to recycle and h e l p f u n d o u r p a r i s h s Capital Campaign. Cat food, dog food, people food all may be recycled with 100% proceeds going to help achieve our $1.6M goal. Already recycled are empty propane tanks, empty fire extinguishers, and metal piping. Anything metal gets recycled by dropping it in the trailer by the paper recycling bins in the large parking lot following the Saturday evening (5 to 6:30) and Sunday Masses (9 to noon) July 28 and July 29. VINCENT de PAUL CHURCH Introduction to Prayer Series 9-10:30 am - Scullen Room We started a series of six small-group sessions focused on deepening our understanding of and commitment to prayer as a Catholic Christian community. These sessions have been structured to explore the meaning and practice of Christian prayer with opportunities for vocal and silent prayer as well as group interaction and sharing regarding the topics explored. Our hope is that an ongoing Contemplative Prayer Group will emerge from this experience. Renewed, they were able to attend to the multitudes who came looking for Jesus. The Christian life has a rhythm alternating between activity and rest & prayer. Be sure to find time for rest and renewal. NOT ME! Harsh words from Jeremiah today. Or more precisely, harsh words from the Lord, spoken through the prophetic mouth of Jeremiah. Lucky for us that these words are directed at somebody else, those "shepherds" who are misleading the sheep of God's pasture. The shepherds, after all, are those who are in official positions, who hold hierarchical status, or who, at the very least, get paid a salary by the diocese or parish. It is easy enough to point a finger and say that, come to think of it, those shepherds have been misleading the flock lately. But it is perilous to ignore the voice of the Lord on the prophets' lips. The divine will of which they speak applies to everybody, and contains some truth about all of our lives. No matter what we might think our role or place is within the fold, each of us has some responsibility to be a shepherd in daily living. In the smallest acts of justice, charity, or compassion we are living out the call of our covenant with the Lord: to be God's voice, God's presence, God's caring and guiding hand in the world. YES, YOU! The apostle Paul tells us that in Christ we all have access in one Spirit to the Father. With this tremendous and wonderful gift comes the responsibility to make it a gift again for the life of the world. As Christ made peace through the blood of his cross, as he reconciled earth with heaven, we are called to continue that peace-making, reconciling work day by day. Each week we gather with Jesus Christ as the apostles do in today's Gospel. We pray in the Eucharistic Prayer: "May this sacrifice, which has made our peace with you, advance the peace and salvation of all the world." Each of us, baptized into the one Body of Christ, saved by the blood of his cross that we share in one cup, are chosen and called for the mission of shepherding in his name. If we take but a moment to look around, we can easily see that there are many places where people are like sheep without a shepherd.
