1 School Newsletter St Mary Star of the Sea CARNARVON To Jesus through Mary Term 2, Issue 2 29th April 2015 St Mary Star of the Sea School Board Fr Mariusz Adamczyk Ex-Officio Karen Gilbert Treasurer Steve O Halloran Ex-Officio Di Ramirez Secretary John Nuttall Chairperson Vice Chair Max March Member John Nuttall P&F Rep Robyn Bumbak Member Marie Gane Member Sue Jordan Member Parish Rep Prayer: In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Nepal, we pray for those who were killed as well as the survivors. Pope Francis led thousands of people in prayer yesterday for the victims of Saturday s earthquake in Nepal, during his Regina Caeli address. After reciting the Marian prayer in St Peter s Square, the Pope said: I wish to express my closeness to the populations struck by a powerful earthquake in Nepal and in neighbouring countries. I pray for the victims, for the wounded, and for all those who suffer because of this calamity. May they be sustained by fraternal solidarity. The Pope then recited a Hail Mary for the people who died following the devastating earthquake. The current death toll is currently at least 3,326 people. Taken from: The Catholic Herald, accessed Monday, 27 Apr news/2015/04/27/pope-leadsprayers-for-victims-of-nepalearthquake/ Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord be with thee Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now, and at the hour of our death. Amen F r o m T h e p r i n c i p a l s d e s k Thursday 30th April Sunday 3rd May Monday 4th May Wednesday 6th May Thursday 7th May Friday 8th May IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER Better Beginnings Kindy 9.30am First Holy Communion Commitment Mass 10am PUPIL FREE DAY P&F Mothers Day Stall P&F Mothers Day Stall Mother s Day Liturgy 10.30am Mother s Day Morning Tea 10.50am Dear Parents, Teachers and Friends, In today s materialistic and often self-centred lifestyle that is encouraged through the media, it is worth noting that one of the virtues most modelled by Christ and encouraged was that of humility. However, for many, there appears to be misunderstanding of what it means to be humble. Too often, people believe that in order to be humble, they must put themselves down, see themselves as worse than anyone else, or in a nutshell minimise their gifts and maximise their shortcomings. This is not humility, that s foolishness. Genuine humility has a lot to do with truthfulness; to be able to acknowledge both our talents and our feelings, to be honest in evaluating our strengths and weaknesses. If we are humble, we admit and take responsibility for our weaknesses and this honesty makes us sensitive and compassionate, not judgemental about the failings of others. A humble person creates an inviting, cordial and comfortable environment. Such a person will make the effort to listen to and accept others, and in turn will be held in esteem and respected. So what s in it for children with parents who have a dash of humility in their character? Well, here are a few possibilities. They will probably get listened to in full and not get hung up on by a parent who says Yes, I already know that! Their self-esteem should be enhanced and the parent s ego left unpolished. They are probably free from comparison with their siblings or other children. They are accepted for whom they are, warts and all! And encouraged to get on with their life. They are allowed to make mistakes without being belittled or put-down. Mistakes are a part of life; home and family should be a safe place in which to make them. Mistakes should not be the focus for shame but an opportunity for growth. They are counselled that if success comes their way they should be thankful and not boastful. They might advise that life is not about trying to impress other people but enjoying being who you are.
2 Christ offered many contradictions to the way in which we might see life. For all His brilliance as a teacher and His compassion as human being, He was born in a stable, grew up in an obscure village and died nailed to a cross. His life was centred on people not material possessions. He encouraged us to Learn of me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and, Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised. His latter words have been beautifully paraphrased to read, The humble are people who are quiet enough inside themselves to be fully present to others and to listen to them; They are assured God will hear them. FIRST EUCHARIST This Sunday, a number of our Year 4 students will begin their First Holy Communion preparation for this year by attending their Commitment Mass at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish at the 10:00 am mass. We wish these boys and girls all the very best as they begin this next significant phase of their faith journey. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY Next Monday, 4th May, is a staff professional development day. There will be no school for students on this day. ANZAC DAY SERVICE Last Friday we acknowledged ANZAC Day with a service in the school hall led by Mr Daryl Weatherdon. It was a fitting and reverent occasion where the students displayed much respect for the sacrifice that others have made for our country and way of life. Thanks to Mr Weatherdon for coordinating the service. I would also like to thank Liam McMurrich and Luke Nuttall for representing St Mary s at the Anzac Service on Saturday. ACTING HEAD OF PRIMARY POSITION Mrs Trudy Cox has accepted the Acting Head of Primary position due to Mrs Nyman leaving at the end of Term 1 to assume the principal s role at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Mullewa. Mrs Cox has undertaken this role in the past and we re sure she will continue to provide the school with great service in this leadership position. The substantive Head of Primary role will be advertised in the latter half of the year. PRAYERS We pray for all those who are ill and those who care for sick relatives and friends. We also pray for those who have recently had relatives or friends who have passed way. We ask God to grant strength and comfort to all those in our prayers. God Bless Mr Steve O Halloran Principal Liam McMurrich and Luke Nuttall representing St Mary s at Anzac Day
