1 St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Third Sunday of Lent March 24, 2019
2 The Third Week in the Desert How is your Lent going? What have you learned about Jesus? What have you learned about yourself? This weekend we start the Third Week of Lent. I like to think of Lent as a long race, like a 10K or marathon. Each week we take a lap around the course. On Sunday we pause, take a break, reassess and head back out onto the course. Here are a few things to consider as we begin Week 3. Have I taken extra time for prayer this Lent? Lent is a time for spiritual growth and we need to intentionally spend more time with Jesus. Is there someone I need to forgive this Lent? Is there some unforgiveness in my heart that I am holding on to? Is there someone I need to ask forgiveness from? Have I made a good Confession this Lent? One could go on the weekends, or to our Lenten Penance Service or make an appointment with one of the priests. Be sure to experience the mercy of Jesus this Lent! Have I participated in the Stations of the Cross? Again, this is a chance to see the love that Jesus has done for me. The essence of Lent is that Jesus Christ loves me and wants a relationship with me. I should seek to remove all that is hindering my walk with Jesus Christ. -We are making great progress on the church grounds! In January 2017 we finished our pew project and added solid oak pews and padded aluminum kneelers. Our pews should be great for the next 75 years! -This winter we replaced all the Plexiglas coverings for our stained glass windows which had become scratched and yellowed through the years. The workers fixed over 37 panes of glass that had cracked or had holes in them. In the main choir window the wood base of the Marian window was replaced. All windows were cleaned on the interior and exterior. All windows were covered with laminated safety glass that is UV resistant and storm resistant.. These coverings were framed with custom aluminum framing. Our stained glass windows are set for the next 75 years! -Our parish is in its 151 st year thanks be to God. Our current church building is 51 years old. This winter we made a major renovation adding men s and women s bathrooms that have baby changing stations and that are accessible to all. We added a new confessional that is wheelchair accessible. We also have a great gathering space for coffee and donuts after mass and a gathering space for medium sized receptions and meetings. I think this addition will make our church more family friendly, give us space for fellowship and give us additional meeting space during the week. This addition should last at least 75 years! When school gets out at the end of May we will set our sights on renovating our school which has been in existence 119 years! This building serves our students at SFX school and also our Sunday school. Please see Dr. Mermann s note on the school page. The Lord is doing great things here! May we continue to be open to listening to him on our Lenten journey and all the days of our lives! God bless, Fr. Tim

4 Once again the Knights of Columbus will offer a Fish Fry during Lent. Dinner will be served on Fridays from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Cost is $8 per person. Meal includes fish, grits, hush puppies and tea. Grilled cheese sandwiches are also available for $2.50. This is open to all, so invite your family and friends! Tickets are available at the door or after masses. Fish Fry dates are March 29, April 5 & 12. Consider coming at 6:00 pm or 6:30 and staying for the Stations of the Cross, which begin at 7:00 pm. Stations of the Cross will be celebrated throughout Lent in the main church each Friday. What are the Stations? This is an ancient meditation on the last hours of our Lord s life. From Pilate condemning Jesus to death, through his three falls, to his body being laid in the tomb, we meditate on all that Our Lord has done for us. The meditations last for about 30 minutes. This is a devotional that is open to all, so please consider inviting some friends, co-workers and family members to join you. Each week we will offer the Stations on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. in the main church. Here is our first report for the Bishop s Annual Appeal (Who is my neighbor?) SFX Target is $58,467 Total given thus far: $30, of 682 families have made their pledge If you have not made a pledge please take an envelope from the pew today. Thank you as we seek to serve Jesus in the neighbor around us! Collections for: March 16 & 17 $ 11,623 Knights of Columbus 100 th Anniversary This year our local Knights of Columbus are celebrating their 100 th anniversar y as a council! In honor of this Bishop Boland will come and celebrate the 11:00 Mass on Sunday May 5 and a reception will follow in Xavier Hall.
5 Our Forward with Faith Campaign has raised enough to begin Phase One of the renovation process. Starting in June, we are going to rewire the building, convert to a modern HVAC system which will be much more effective and resourceful, convert to new LED lighting, increase our ADA accessibility and cover the school with a brand new roof so that it will be protected for years to come. We would like to make additional upgrades that would not only make the building more efficient but also more beautiful. First and foremost, we would love to replace all of the windows and classroom doors used daily by our students and teachers. Please pray this Lenten season that additional contributions to Catholic education will give our next generation a beautiful building in which to learn the ways of Christ. Each week, 191 students attend SFX School and on Sundays 154 students attend the Parish School of Religion. That means at least 345 young people come through the doors each week to learn about God s love for them and then share that love with the Golden Isles community. Please discern and pray how to best participate as we keep the great legacy of St. Francis Xavier Catholic School moving forward! For each of the following, a naming plaque would be furnished in recognition or in memory or honor of someone. Complete Classroom (doors, windows, technology, desks, HVAC) $55,000 Replace all of the classroom doors in the school $50,000 Update communication system to include Xavier Hall $30,000 Additional fencing to secure campus $20,000 New reception area $20,000 New school secretary office $20,000 Replace the windows in a classroom $20,000 Upgrade a classroom with the latest technology capabilities $10,000 Outfit a classroom with student and teacher chairs and desks $ 5,000 For more information, please call the office of Director of Development at , ext. 13 or kspaeder@sfxcs.org
