1 St. Boniface Catholic Parish Sunday, April 22,
2 Dear Parishioners: Fourth Sunday of Easter I am the good shepherd says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me. Today is the fourth Sunday of the Easter Season. Each year of the liturgical cycle on this 4th Sunday, the Gospel is always taken from the 10th chapter of John where Jesus speaks of himself as the good shepherd. There are three things that need to be emphasized about today's Gospel. The good shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep. Jesus contrasts the good shepherd who owns the sheep to someone who is simply hired to watch the sheep. The hired person only thinks of himself and if he sees a wolf coming he takes off. Jesus will not be like a hired person: I lay down my life for my sheep. We should also remember that the good shepherd knows his sheep and they of course know him. There is a mutual bond of love. That love is compared to the deep mutual relationship that exists between Jesus and his Father. The hired man mentioned above, does not have a relationship with his those in his care. Also the good shepherd desires that many other sheep should come to identify themselves with him. There are other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and these I have to lead as well. The ultimate goal is that there will be only one flock, and one shepherd, that the whole world will be united together with its God and Lord. This is the meaning of the Kingdom which is at the heart of the Gospel message. There are still so many millions of people who have not yet heard the message of a loving God, a God who sent his only Son to die for them. Today is also Vocation Sunday. We should continue praying that the Church may be provided with the leaders needed to do its work of spreading the Gospel. We know that at the present time there is a critical shortage of such leaders, at least in the traditional sense - priests and religious. We should pray for more young people to seek a vocation as priests or religious. Let's also remember to pray for the priest who will fill the role here at St. Boniface that Father Loyola leaves vacant in June. May he be a strong leader in all areas of our parish community. One final note, I would like to compliment the Christian Women for the job they did with the parish Rummage and Bake Sale the week after Easter. A lot of time was spent setting up and pricing all the rummage that was dropped off. Special thanks to Rosemary Schmitt and her family. I heard they logged in over 280 hours during that week helping with pricing, setup, etc. What a great example of giving back to our parish. Peace, Bill Neureuther, Director of Administrative Services Eucharistic Adoration Include adoration in your devotions this spring. You are personally invited to join me for an intimate hour of prayer. Admission is always free. I have your reserved seat waiting. Five Steps to Safer Environments April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is most appropriate that Child Abuse Prevention Month is held during the Easter season. There is no better time than Easter to celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God our children. Five Steps to Safer Environments The Archdiocese of Milwaukee mandates that all people who work and volunteer with children and youth in our parishes and schools must undergo safe environment education. The education details five steps to prevent child sexual abuse: Know the warning signs of an inappropriate relationship with a child. 1. Know the warning signs! 2. Control access to children by carefully selecting the adults who work with children and youth. 3. Monitor all programs for the safety of children and youth. 4. Be aware of and sensitive to what is going on in the lives of children. 5. Communicate concerns to the appropriate person in authority.
