3 Pastors Notes The Gospel and Acts have a great deal of similarity. Jesus is saying His last words to the Apostles before He begins His Passion. St. Stephen, the first martyr, is also saying his last words as he is stoned to death. Both are really being lynched, yet both are calling upon God and asking forgiveness for their killers. Jesus, in His human nature, makes a prayer to the Father by looking up to heaven and asking God to keep His disciples and believers as one, That all may be one as You, Father, are in Me and I in You. Obviously He is asking for a mystical union which we cannot fully understand. It is closely related to our devotion to the Sacred Heart and being nourished by the Holy Eucharist. Stephen, about to die, is filled with the Holy Spirit and also looks up to heaven as a perfect disciple imitating Jesus, Jesus, receive my spirit... do not hold sin against them." Jesus and Stephen demonstrate the dynamic of the Mystery of the Communion of Saints, being members of the one Body of Christ. This unity is derived from Jesus human nature which in turn is derived from being members of His Church. The dual nature of Jesus, being both God and man, links us into the mystery of the Holy Trinity. In experiencing this Mercy of God, our intercession becomes Christ s intercession. This makes it possible for us to desire the well-being and salvation, not only for ourselves, but for all our fellow human beings. Because this is shared love with God, we can more easily understand why God wants us to even love our enemies. St. Stephen s vision of Jesus in Heaven shows a tender love for this man undergoing his martyrdom. Jesus, Whom we recognize as the King of the Universe, is not sitting on His throne in a ruling position, but rather is standing and looking down with concern. Stephen is living the last Beatitude, Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in Heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you! The Fathers of the Church, those who either knew Jesus or the Apostles, say that the conversion of Paul was effected by the merits of St. Stephen s death. It was Saul, the future St. Paul, who approved of the lynching, by watching the clothing of those who were stoning St. Stephen. The executioners had to free themselves of their outer garments to enable them to throw the stones with more force to kill him. Please keep in your prayers all those who have been kidnapped around the world for being Christian. Many may have been martyred already. Since God loves all of us, please also pray for those other members of minority religions who are suffering in the same way. Euk Scripture Meditation "...That the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them." In this beautiful and heartfelt prayer to God the Father, Jesus expresses his deep desire for unity. He prays that "those who will believe in me... may all be one." This unity is meant to be an effect of the love that believers experience through their own unity with God. When we are filled with the love of God, we can truly be united to one another. Why? Because God's love loves everyone. God's love sees the dignity of every human person, made in his own image. God's love does not allow room for grudges and schisms. It is always ready to forgive and embrace. This kind of love leads to the interpersonal unity that Jesus prayed we would have for one another. But, alas, we get into fights. We argue, we criticize, we take revenge. We cause division where there ought to be unity. It's especially tragic when this happens among Christians. Whether it be petty infighting in a parish setting, family strife among those who practice the same faith, or animosity among Catholics and members of other Christian denominations, it matters little. All of these situations stand in stark contrast to the unity that Jesus desired for us. Being instruments of this true Christian unity begins in our own hearts. Instead of finding fault in others, we would do well to ask ourselves how open we truly are to God's love.

MEMORIAL DAY MASS & COMMUNION BREAKFAST On Monday, Memorial Day, May 30, at 9:00 AM, St. Veronica s will be celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass to pray for peace in the world, for all our men and women in the military who have given their lives in the cause of peace, for our troops who have been injured while serving in the military, for our troops who are currently serving in the military, and for all our veterans. A free Communion Breakfast featuring a hot buffet provided by the Knights of Columbus Council 6201 in honor of our troops and veterans will follow the Mass in the school cafeteria. All are welcome.
