3 Pastors Notes I want to thank our volunteer ground keepers. The mall looks beautiful and the front of the rectory is finally cleared. There are a few more trees that need trimming of dead branches which will make for good fire wood. Contact Deacon Gino if you are interested. I took care of the Canada geese by chasing them whenever they landed to mess things up. They got the hint that this is no place to raise a family. I have a deep love for two important days in our Roman calendar, Holy Thursday where Jesus instituted the Mass and the priesthood, and Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit gave us His gifts. Today we celebrate Pentecost. I almost feel that the Sacrament of Confirmation is the second most important Sacrament, next to the Holy Eucharist. I say this because, as a layman, it provided me with so many gifts that saved my integrity and gave me nerve to stand up to adversity while I worked in medical research and in politics. Last Tuesday the Sacrament of Confirmation was administered to our parish s eighth graders. Unfortunately too many of them will not return to nourishing their souls to keep them from the sins of the secular world. They will loose the excitement of sharing in the glory of God in their adolescence and young adulthood. I am grateful to God that this disinterest never infected me and I really rejoice in seeing those who stick with Christ the way He wants us to. Traditionally the Gospel for Pentecost was the first apparition of the resurrected Jesus to the Apostles. The last time they were with Jesus, the Apostles all fled at His arrest. Later, the leading Apostle denied Jesus three times. So what does Jesus do? He forgives them their sins and gives them the power to forgive sins in His Name. What a turn of events! For the Jews, Pentecost commemorated the Ten Commandments given at Mt. Sinai. The rabbinical tradition was to celebrate it 50 days after the Passover of Israelites from Egypt. They celebrated it in the Temple with an all night bible study. For the Christians, Pentecost commemorates the Passover of Jesus from this life to the Father. The theophany of the Christian Pentecost was very similar to Mt. Sinai as Moses received the 10 Commandments. The theophany of the Upper Room has three basic markings of God. The wind is the sign of Elijah s theophany of the whispering wind where God passes by Elijah, The wind blows where it wills. The tongues of fire remind us of the column of fire that guided the Israelites out of Egypt and in the desert, Our God is a consuming fire. The multiplication of languages counters the mutual incomprehension at the Tower of Babel. Now there is a mutual understanding and an ability to listen to God. What becomes clear to all is that the Apostles were understood speaking of the works of God to anyone present. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "And I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always." Pentecost fulfilled this promise. The Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and nothing was ever the same again. This event is often referred to as the "birthday" of the church. It took Pentecost--and the power of the Spirit- -to embolden the apostles to begin their ministry of preaching and baptizing. Conversions began to happen and the early church began to grow. And all of this took place without Jesus' earthly presence among them. This is one of the most encouraging elements of the practice of our Christian faith. We believe that through the Holy Spirit, God dwells within us and empowers us. We believe that even though we never walked with Jesus and the apostles, we are nonetheless accompanied by the same Spirit who is always available to us! We only need to stir up this Spirit within our souls by praying sincerely, "Come, Holy Spirit!" The special hymn of today's feast, called the sequence, does just this. It also expresses well the package of "benefits" that come from the presence of the Advocate among us: "You, of comforters the best; You, the soul's most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe." And not only do we receive these personal blessings, but the Church herself also receives a tremendous gift. As Jesus said, "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit... will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you." It is only through this divine guidance from on high that the Church has the power and privilege to teach and guide us who are still here below.

MEMORIAL DAY MASS & COMMUNION BREAKFAST On Monday, Memorial Day, May 30, at 9:00 AM, St. Veronica s will be celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass to pray for peace in the world, for all our men and women in the military who have given their lives in the cause of peace, for our troops who have been injured while serving in the military, for our troops who are currently serving in the military, and for all our veterans. A free Communion Breakfast featuring a hot buffet provided by the Knights of Columbus Council 6201 in honor of our troops and veterans will follow the Mass in the school cafeteria. All are welcome. 5 Pentecost Celebration & Fellowship All are invited to celebrate the birthday of the church at 1:15pm today (May 15th) in the School cafeteria. Please join us for food and fellowship. Activities for the children will be available. Counseling Services Diocese of Trenton Through a joint effort of the Diocese of Trenton and Catholic Charities, licensed professional counselors are available to help parishioners with difficult issues, such as, bereavement, marital and family problems, elder care, and stress of job loss. The service can be accessed by contacting your pastor or parish priest who will provide additional information and a referral. The fee is $75 per session. If needed, financial assistance for this short term counseling (up to 6 sessions) is available through the Diocese of Trenton Parish Counseling Services. Altar Server Ministry Consider Joining our Altar Server Ministry St. Veronica Altar Server Ministry provides an opportunity for the young people of our parish to become more involved in the parish in a constructive, helpful and educational way. The altar server ministry is a very important and beautiful commitment to our parish community and is an invitation by God. The altar server ministry provides boys and girls with the opportunity to learn more about their faith and to begin to build a foundation of evangelization and stewardship by serving at Mass and other liturgical functions. An altar server is the right hand helper of the priest and deacon at the Mass. This ministry allows young parishioners to grow in the following ways: `Serve Christ and the Church `Participate in the Liturgy `Learn more about the Mass and the Church `Be more involved in the Parish. The ministry is open to those in Fifth Grade and beyond, who have celebrated their First Communion.
