GKidz Timothy Club (K1-2) Small Group Guide Theme: God s Transforming Wisdom Date: 11&12 July 2015 Lesson 7 Part 2: God Helps Daniel in a New Land Memory Verse: May God be praised forever and ever! He is wise and powerful. Daniel 2:20 Bible Passage: Daniel 1 Learning Objectives: Children will learn that God is with them all the time; in times of safety and familiarity and in times of fear and confusion. Value Highlighted: Choose the Right Way Materials needed: GKidz will provide: Activity Sheet A, Memory Verse strips, colour paper strips, double sided tape A. Show and Tell (5 min) 1. Go through the new Memory Verse from Daniel 2:20 with signing learnt last week. 2. Allow 2 to 3 children to display their craft God Keeps Me Safe. B. Intro/Review (10 min) 1. Make sure you set up the same surrounding as the previous lesson so that children can practice the same culture and language again like in the previous lesson. 2. Leader then gather the children to form a circle and teach a familiar song but change the lyrics by using the gibberish language. (Leaders must devise a song to the tune of any nursery rhyme or song. Actions are important to engage the children to sing together.) For example this song is to the tune of Jesus you are my Lord : Tota Ka ta La ma Tota Ka ta La hemesi Tota Ka ta La ma Ka ta al du na Jesus You are my Lord Jesus You are my everything Jesus You are my Lord You are all to me Transition: Leaders to say, In this strange land, Daniel was forced by the guard to eat food that God told Daniel, his friends and the people of Israel not to eat. Daniel wasn t about to give up following God s laws. But if Daniel did not eat the food which the king 1
gave them, the king would kill them. Daniel was in a time of fear and confusion. (Let s look at the Bible and see what Daniel did.) C.. INTO THE WORD (15 min) 1. Show last week s video on Daniel - Leaders say, Daniel was at the mercy of his new rulers. But he came up with a wise plan that would allow him to remain obedient to God while still submitting to his new authority. Now play this game; Guard, May I? 2. Begin by appointing a guard. This person will be the powerful rule-setter who can accept or reject a request. You can be the first guard, or you can choose a volunteer to be the guard. 3. Have the guard stand at one end of the room and everyone else line up in a row at the opposite side. Each person gets a turn to ask the guard for permission to move forward using questions such as Guard, may I take three large steps? The guard can say Yes, you may or No, you may not. 4. If the request is denied, the same player should think of another request and see if the guard will allow this one instead. If this request is denied too, that player must remain in place until her next turn. (Hint: it s probably a good idea for the kids to ask for small movements, such as three small steps instead of three large ones.) 5. Each player should take turns making requests to the guard, with the guard approving or denying the requests. The game continues until one player finally moves all the way across the room and tags the guard. 6. When this is done, gather the children back to sit in a circle and ask the following questions: What do you need to do if the guard rejects your first request? How did this help you to go and find other ways to reach the ending point during this game? 7. God didn t just stay with Daniel and his friends. He gave them the ability to stand out from all the other young men that were being trained. Transition: Read out Daniel 1:17-21 aloud together to find out how the Lord helped the king s new trainees. Pause for a moment to see if your kids remember the meanings of wisdom and understanding. Review the definitions: Wisdom is the ability to know what s needed in every situation and understanding how to do it. Understanding is the ability to figure something out. Leader to say, What an incredible gift! Even though everything around them seemed strange and hard to understand, God gave Daniel and his friends lots of wisdom and knowledge. In the end, Daniel and his friends became the king s right-hand men. 2
D. Craft / Ministry Time (30 min) 1. Leaders please slot the Memory Verse strips into the pre-cut slits on the God Helpline handphone cards in advance. Please stick 1 colour paper strip onto the BACK of each end of the Memory Verse strip with double sided tape AFTER you have slotted it into the pre-cut slit. This is to prevent the Memory Verse strip from dropping out. Memory Verse Strip God Helpline Handphone Card Colour paper strips at both ends of the back of the Memory Verse God Helpline Handphone Card with Memory Verse Strip slotted in 2. Tell the children that God is always ready to help us learn new things, just like the way He helped Daniel and his friends. Ask the children to think of one new thing that they want to learn, e,g. swimming, riding a bicycle, reading new words, dancing, etc. 3. Show the children the craft sample God Helpline handphone. Tell the children that when they slide the Memory Verse strip up, it will show the Memory Verse and if they slide the strip down it will show the new thing that they want to learn. This will remind them that as they pray and ask God to help them to learn, God will do so. 3
Slide to show the new thing that the child wants to learn Slide to show the Memory Verse 4. Give the children one Activity Sheet A each with the Memory Verse strip slotted in. Ask the children to write their names on the line s God Helpline. Slide to the Memory Verse strip to show the box God helps me to learn, ask them to draw / write one thing that they want to learn in the big box with the words God helps me to learn (the thing that the child wants to learn). Leaders please help the children to write down the thing that they want to learn on the line. 5. After that, the children can decorate the small apps icons. 4
6. Ask the children to bring back their God Helpline Handphone the following week to share with the rest the progress of their learning. 7. Pray a blessing for the children from Ephesians 1:17-19a. Encourage them to stretch out their hands with their palms facing up to receive the blessing from God as you pray. 8. Ask the parents to follow up at home and give their child the necessary help on the new things that their child wants to learn. Reference: Rio Early Elementary Leader s Guide, Spring
