TEACHER BIBLE STUDY 4 th -6 th Grade Kids Bible Study Guide People had been waiting a long time for Jesus. God hinted at His coming in the garden of Eden when He promised a seed to conquer the serpent. (Genesis 3:15) The prophets told of His coming hundreds of years before His birth. God was working out His plan to reconcile people to Himself. In the Bible, God often used angels to communicate His message to people. Angels spoke to Abraham in Genesis 18. The Angel of the Lord spoke to Balaam in Numbers 22. Now Mary and Joseph, the earthly parents of Jesus, each received a special visit from an angel to announce the birth of God s promised Messiah. The angel Gabriel s announcement to Mary surprised her. God chose Mary to be the mother of His child. The angel s message revealed much about this promised child. First, He would be great in both being and nature. He would be the Son of the Most High. Jesus is the Son of God, and the Lord God promised to give Him the throne of His father David. These words fulfilled the prophecy given to David in 2 Samuel 7: Jesus would reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom would have no end. The good news that Jesus was coming into the world was good news because of why He was coming. An angel revealed Jesus purpose to Joseph in Matthew 1:21, He will save His people from their sins. The gospel is the good news of what God has done for us through Christ. The announcement of Jesus birth is not the beginning of the gospel; God had been planning for this moment since before the beginning of time. (See Ephesians 1:3-10.) Help the kids you teach understand that God s plan has always been to save sinners and bring them back to Himself. Jesus, whose name means Yahweh saves, is the center of that plan. The angel went to visit a young virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to Joseph, a descendant of King David. The angel said to Mary, Rejoice! You have found favor with God. He is with you. Mary was very afraid and puzzled. Why would God find favor with her? She had done nothing special. The angel told Mary to not be afraid. He told Mary that she was going to have a very special and unique baby, and they would call the baby Jesus, which means the Lord saves. The angel explained that the baby would be great He would be God s Son! He would even be a king the King God had promised would come. Mary asked the angel, How can that happen? I am not married yet. The angel replied, The Holy Spirit will come, and a miracle will happen. The baby will be God s Son. The angel Gabriel told Mary, Nothing will be impossible with God! He told Mary that her relative Elizabeth was pregnant, even though she was old and did not have any children. Mary replied, I belong to God. May everything happen just as you said. Then the angel left her. Mary hurried to her relative Elizabeth s house. When she arrived, the baby inside Elizabeth 2

leaped for joy! The Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth and she said, What an honor, Mary! Your baby will be blessed too! Mary was so happy. She praised God with a song about how great God is. Mary knew every family in the future would say she was blessed because God was going to do great things for her through Jesus. God was keeping His promise to bless the whole world through Jesus. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months. Then she went home. Now Joseph found out Mary was going to have a baby, but Joseph knew it was not his baby Mary and Joseph were not married yet! Joseph decided to break his engagement with Mary so she would not be publicly disgraced. Soon after Joseph thought these things, an angel appeared to him in a dream. Joseph! the angel said. Don t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the baby she is carrying was put there by the Holy Spirit. Mary is going to have a son; name Him Jesus because He is going to save His people from their sins! This happened just like the prophet said it would: See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name Him Immanuel, which is translated God with us. When Joseph woke up, he did exactly as the angel commanded. He married Mary, and when she had a son, Joseph named Him Jesus. Christ Connection: Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14). The baby Jesus fulfilled Isaiah s prophecy, as well as other prophecies of the coming Savior throughout the Old Testament. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus fulfilled God s plan of redemption that God planned from the beginning of the world. TRANSITION TIME Session Title: Angels Spoke to Mary and Joseph Bible Passage: Luke 1:26-56; Matthew 1:18-24 Big Picture Question: What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? God chose Mary and Joseph to be the earthly parents of Jesus. Key Passage: Luke 2:30-32 Unit Christ Connection: The Savior God had promised was born. Welcome time Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. Invite kids to share what they love the most and what they like the least about Christmastime. 3

Activity page Table Centers (Miscellaneous Activities) All Mixed Up / God Uses People in His Plan activity page, 1 per kid pencils Help kids locate all of the wrong things in the picture on the All Mixed Up activity page. Each wrong thing has a letter that kids can use to complete a sentence from today s Bible story. Say What would you feel or think if an angel appeared and started speaking to you? What do you think Mary and Joseph felt or thought at first? Why did the angel appear to Mary and Joseph? The angel shared a message from God. As time allows, lead kids to complete the activity page God Uses People in His Plan. Guide kids to review the Bible stories on the page by writing or sharing one sentence about each story. Session starter (10 minutes) Option 1: Jump Up Answers laminated verse reference cards Bibles, 1 per kid masking tape Each of the following references are provided on cards in your classroom. Using masking tape, tape each card to a wall. Read the first prophecy. Challenge kids to locate the reference in the Bible that matches the statement. When kids locate the correct answer, they should jump up. Repeat for each prophecy. Jesus would be born as a child and reign on the throne of David. (Isaiah 9:6-7) Jesus would heal the blind and deaf. (Isaiah 35:5) Jesus would be born in Bethlehem. (Micah 5:2) Jesus would shepherd His people. (Micah 5:4) As time allows, examine some of the New Testament Scriptures that highlight the fulfillment of these prophecies: Matthew 11:5; Luke 1:32-33; 2:4-7,11-12; John 10:11. Say Over the next few weeks, we will study the birth of Jesus. Jesus fulfilled every single prophecy that was made about His life, death, and resurrection. In our game today, you jumped up when you found the answer. Someone in our Bible story jumped or leaped. Listen to discover who leaped. Option 2: Big Picture Collection colored paper, 1 color per team marker Option: To increase the challenge, write half of each word on each piece of paper. Kids must match each word, then arrange the words in correct order to reveal the question. Write each word of the big picture question on a piece of paper. Create different sets for each team using different colored paper. Mix all of the papers together in one pile. Form teams of two or more. Kids must take turns traveling to the pile and retrieving one of the papers for their team. Challenge kids to gather all of the papers and arrange them in order to reveal today s big 4

picture question. Say Our big picture question is, What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? Does God use people in His plan? What is God s plan? Right, God s plan is for Jesus to rescue people from sin. Can God use you in His plan? Do you want Him to use you? Why or why not? Transition to large group LESSON Session Title: Angels Spoke to Mary and Joseph Bible Passage: Luke 1:26-56; Matthew 1:18-24 Big Picture Question: What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? God chose Mary and Joseph to be the earthly parents of Jesus. Key Passage: Luke 2:30-32 Unit Christ Connection: The Savior God had promised was born. Suggested Theme Decorating Ideas: Use any traditional Christmas decorations that are appropriate for your church environment. If you are pausing in the middle of another theme to celebrate Christmas, decorate the theme you have with Christmas decorations. Countdown countdown video (insert provided DVD with lesson videos and worship) Show the countdown video as you clean-up table centers, set up classroom chairs for lesson and set it to end as large group time begins. Introduce the session (3 minutes) tree garland ornaments [Large Group Leader enters carrying tree garland and ornaments. Whistle or hum a popular Christmas carol as you approach the teaching area.] Leader I just love this time of year. Christmas. Singing carols. Decorating my house. Baking cookies. Family parties. Telling people about Jesus birth. Attending church with my grandparents. It is a special time of year. Hey, I know, let s sing a Christmas carol to start our time together. Shout out your favorite carols and I ll choose one for us to sing. Allow kids to shout out several options. Select one and lead the group to sing a verse or two. 5

Timeline map (1 minute) Timeline Map small group visual pack (Additional copies provided for Table Time Review) Bibles Leader You sing beautifully. Thanks for praising God with me today. I love that God sent Jesus to rescue us from sin. What an amazing plan God had to save us! The Bible stories we have studied in the Old Testament are all a part of God s big plan to send Jesus. Let s review a couple of stories we have studied. When I point to a picture on the timeline map, stand up if you know who is in the picture and what part he or she had in God s plan to send Jesus. Select two or three stories that the group have studied, and allow kids to share briefly about each story. You may select more stories to review if time allows. Leader Great work! God s plan to send Jesus involved many, many people, and each person had a special part in God s plan. Today we are going to study two more people who had a part in God s plan. Big picture question (1 minute) 11x17 poster provided Bibles Leader Our big picture question is, What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? If you think you know who Mary and Joseph are, raise your hand. Oh, I see a lot of hands in the air. We will have to listen to our Bible story to find out if you are right. Remember, our big picture question is, What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? Tell the Bible Story (10 minutes) Angels Spoke to Mary and Joseph video Bibles, 1 per kid Bible Story Picture 11x17 poster provided Big Picture Question: What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? 11x17 poster provided Tip: A Bible story script is provided at the beginning of every session. You may use it to guide you as you prepare to teach the Bible story in your own words. For a shorter version of the Bible story, read only the bolded text. Open your Bible to Luke 1 and tell the Bible story in your own words, or show the Bible story video Angels Spoke to Mary and Joseph. Leader Throughout the Old Testament, God told His people, One day I will send My Son. Over and over God revealed, Jesus is coming. Jesus is coming. Say that phrase with me three times. We will start with a whisper, then say it in a normal voice, and on the third time, we will shout it. Ready? Jesus is coming. Jesus is coming. Jesus is coming! God s people understood that a Messiah was coming, but they did not know when He would come. Jesus had to come to earth as a human being in order to die for our sins. He lived like us. He ate food, drank water, slept, felt emotions, and faced temptation to sin. Yet, Jesus was different from us. He lived perfectly without sinning. He never ever, not one single time sinned. Can you imagine never sinning? We can t do it. That is why God sent Jesus. 6

Mary and Joseph knew that God would send the Messiah to save His people from sin, but they had no idea that they would be a special part of God s plan. Our big picture question is, What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? The answer is, God chose Mary and Joseph to be the earthly parents of Jesus. Wow! What a plan God had! A miracle occurred and Mary was the earthly mother of Jesus. God promised throughout the Old Testament that a savior would come. Prophets like Isaiah prophesied about Jesus. Isaiah told God s people that Immanuel was coming. Immanuel means God with us. God sent Jesus to be with people. He was sent to save us. The Gospel: God s Plan for Me (optional) Using Scripture and the guide provided, explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Tell kids how they can respond, and provide counselors to speak with each kid individually. Guide counselors to use open-ended questions to allow kids to determine the direction of the conversation. Because some kids are not comfortable responding during a large group time, encourage girls and boys to ask their parents, small group leaders, or other adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian. Key passage (5 minutes) Key Passage Poster: Luke 2:30-32 (11x17 poster, provided) Worship Song: Glory to Your People (on provided DVD) Leader Our key passage is found in Luke 2: We will learn later who said these words and why. Read it with me. Lead boys and girls to read the key passage together. Leader Our passage calls someone Your salvation. Who do you think Your salvation is? Right! It is Jesus. Jesus is God s salvation. He saves people from sin. Read the first part of the key passage with me three times. Lead girls and boys to say the first part of the passage together. On the third time, challenge kids to say the phrase with their eyes closed. Guide boys and girls to sing Glory to Your People. Discussion Starter Video (4 minutes) Unit 16, Session 1 discussion starter video (on provided DVD) Leader If you had to pick someone to be on a team with, who would you choose and why? Think about that while we watch this video. Show the Unit 16 Session 1 video. Leader If you were one of the captains, how would you decide whom to pick for your team? How did God choose Mary and Joseph? How did God choose people to be a special part of His plan to send Jesus? Mary might not have been who people would have chosen. She was a young girl. She wasn t an allstar anything that we know of. The Bible doesn t tell us that Joseph was anything special either. Mary and Joseph followed God, and He chose them to be the earthly parents of Jesus. 7

God also has a special plan for each of you. You may not think you are special, but God knows exactly why He created you and what purpose He has for you. While you wait for God to reveal His plan for you, what can you do to know and love God? (possible answers: read the Bible, go to church, learn from mature Christians, pray) Sing (4 minutes) Worship Song: Shout for Joy (on provided DVD) Leader We started our day together by singing a Christmas carol. We are going to end our time together singing another Christmas song. Stand with me as we sing our theme song, Shout for Joy. Lead girls and boys to sing Shout for Joy. Prayer (2 minutes) Leader Jesus is coming. Jesus is coming. Jesus is coming. God had been working out His plan since Adam and Eve sinned. God knew we needed a Savior. God knew we needed to be rescued from our sin. We can t save ourselves. We need Jesus. What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? God chose Mary and Joseph to be the earthly parents of Jesus. After I pray, watch your small group leader for your turn to go to your small group. Close in prayer. Dismiss to small groups for Table Time The Gospel: God s Plan for Me Ask kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means good news. It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids. God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean. We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23) God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9. Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18. We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He s already done 8

on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus. Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus. TABLE TIME LEADER Session Title: Angels Spoke to Mary and Joseph Bible Passage: Luke 1:26-56; Matthew 1:18-24 Big Picture Question: What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? Lead kids to locate Luke 1:26 or Matthew 1:18 in the Bible. Challenge girls and boys to retell the Bible story by playing story tag. The first person will stand up and start the Bible story. She may tell 1 5 sentences of the story. When she finishes, she should tag another person to be the next storyteller. The next storyteller may tell 1 5 sentences of the story before tagging the next storyteller. Kids may refer to their Bibles if they become confused or can t remember the Bible story. You may also allow kids to tell the story in pairs rather than as single storytellers. Say What part did Mary and Joseph have in God s plan? God chose Mary and Joseph to be the earthly parents of Jesus. Who fulfilled God s plan of redemption? (Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus fulfilled God s plan of redemption that God planned from the beginning of the world.) Review the timeline in the small group visual pack. If you choose to review with boys and girls how to become a Christian, explain that kids are welcome to speak with you or another leader if they have questions. God rules. God created and is in charge of everything. (Genesis 1:1; Revelation 4:11; Colossians 1:16-17) We sinned. Since Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23; 6:23) God provided.
