Just as summer is in full swing, we have added a new great piece of playground equipment thanks to a generous donation by one of our members. Around the Bend climbing wall is designed for kids ages 5 to 12 years. It has been professionally installed by Playworld, and the church completed the project by adding the mulch and grass. Thanks to all who were part of making our play area even better. Kathleen Williams PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN Presbyterian Women will meet during the summer at McAlister s Deli for lunch on the fourth Tuesdays. Those dates are July 25 and August 22. CONTEMPLATIVE KIDS (and adults) Contemplative Kids is an intergenerational class specially crafted to include families with children in preschool - rising fifth grade. This class is designed for both the quieter child and the very active and will be inclusive of all ages and abilities. At 9:00 am on Sundays, participants will learn basic contemplative practices including simple mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation skills. Mindfulness is about awareness. It can teach us how to find the calm that is under all the chaos of our lives. Faith helps us find God there. Each session will engage the imagination using a Bible story theme to help us learn the contemplative skills. Sensory activities and yoga-type stretching will also be included. Guided meditations written for this class will be available for participants to use at home. Sessions will run through July 30. If your family can only come to a few sessions, please sign up and let Amanda Hines know which sessions you will miss. Bring a beach towel or yoga mat. LEMONADE GATHERING This summer, the Membership Ministry invites members and visitors to stop by our lemonade stand in the Welcome Center following the 10am worship service on August 13 and enjoy a time to catch up. This summer through Labor Day weekend (September 3), there will be one Sunday worship service at 10:00 a.m. Each Sunday will feature musical talent provided by the Chancel Choir, Early Band, and Scholar singers. The next edition of our printed publication, FOCUS, will be published on Wednesday, August 2, Please submit all articles to janice@fpcgreenville.org by 9:00 a.m. Monday, July 31, 2017.

Neely, Pastor Amanda Hines, Interim Associate Pastor Kathleen Williams, Director of Christian Education Karrie Rushing, Director of Music Brian Dilday, Youth Director Brad Collier, Organist Deborah Durham, Financial Administrator Janice Gray, Office Administrator Terrence Clemons, Sexton Dear Brothers and Sisters, I M SORRY, WHAT DID YOU SAY, I CAN T HEAR YOU, HUH! I have no idea how many times in the last years I have had to make one of these statements. I knew that the aging process included some loss of both hearing and eyesight, yet no one wants to admit they are getting old. My father used to jokingly say, If I d known I was going to live this long, I d have taken a lot better care of myself. He would also often remark, especially as he approached 90, getting old is hard, but I prefer it to the alternative. Growing up in Spartanburg, South Carolina, our family had a lot of contact with the South Carolina School for the Deaf, known as the Cedar Springs School. Some of my siblings learned to sign, and while I learned a little bit, I have never been good with languages and so even learning sign language was difficult. I cannot imagine living in a world of silence, but I also know that there are times when being able to turn down the noise is helpful. We are so inundated these days with so many voices that sometimes it is hard for us to hear each other. Listening is an acquired skill that must be carefully practiced if we are to truly understand one another. In his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey says that the very first step is seek first to understand what the other person is saying and then and only then should we seek to be understood. A part of our becoming the kingdom of God in this place is our seeking to hear each other, to understand each other s life struggles and to know that we too are being understood. May God give us the ability to hear each other and to speak to each other with love and compassion. Bill Neely
