1 Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. This week s Gospel account is a return to parables! In it, we are presented again with the image of the wedding feast. It should be noted that a wedding in Jesus time was a major event. Everyone came out to celebrate and see the couple. That Jesus uses the wedding feast that everyone attends as a consistent metaphor is very significant and probably understated in our own tradition because the Eucharist itself is a wedding. The nuptial symbolism in the Gospel is crucial to our understanding of our relationship with God. In this parable, we are confronted with two realities of this relationship: first, that some things cannot be borrowed, and second, that some things cannot be attained at the last minute. In our life of faith that we share in Jesus Christ, we must be prepared and know what it is that we wait for. We wait for Christ to come to us, to be with us, and we long to ultimately be united with him in eternity. When we come here for Mass, we come hoping to be closer to him than we were before. We come to be further along. We do not participate in the divine life statically, staying the same from week to week. This is death to the Christian. The goal of our life is a journey that should be progressing and never find us the same. We should be acquiring heaven constantly throughout our lives. If we do not do it this way, then we will not acquire it in the final moments of our lives. We also work on this together, but we still need to get things for ourselves. Each of us fits in in our own unique and gifted way to work in the vineyard of the Lord, but work we must some lightly, some heavily, some 24/7, others with frequent rests but all for the purpose to become one in Jesus Christ, all with the hope that God will use us to better the world with his love. Our broken world will only be raised up with Christ. This is only possible if we direct our will and use our power to do his work and when we have no power, we will receive his. With full confidence in Christ, we become more than ourselves; we become shining lights leading the world out of darkness, out of loneliness, out of despair, out of violence into the light that illumines the Truth: God has loved us and given us a way out of fear and loneliness in Jesus Christ. Remember that God has sent his Spirit upon us to make us Christ to others. We rely on his strength in the love that makes all things possible. So be ready, be alert. The Joy of our life is coming to us to make us wealthy. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael St. Mary s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY November 12, 2017 St. Bridget s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield, NY 14469

3 Question of the Week: How are you preparing to be ready for that moment that no one escapes, the moment when you come to the end of your life as you know it now? This month, we are focusing on the Call to Happiness. In our sessions, we talked a lot about justice and peace. Each grade also learned about a different saint those who lived out this Call to Happiness. Last week s column shared about the saints the younger grades learned about. This week, we invite you to reflect on the lives that our teens learned about. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Our sixth and seventh graders learned about St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (whose feast day happens to be on Monday!). Frances Cabrini was born in northern Italy in When she was 18, she tried to join a religious community, but was turned away because of her poor health. She taught for a while, and then went to work at an orphanage. At age 30, she took the name of the great missionary Francis Xavier and founded her own religious order. She wanted to travel to China, but when she met Pope Leo XIII to get his approval, he sent her to America to help provide pastoral care to the thousands of Italian immigrants settled there. Mother Cabrini and six other sisters arrived in New York in 1889, and soon founded an orphanage for Italian American children. In spite of poor health, a fear of ocean travel, and many other obstacles, Mother Cabrini eventually opened 67 schools, orphanages, and hospitals across the United States, as well as in Latin America, France, Spain and England. Mother Cabrini made good use of the Holy Spirit's gifts of wisdom, understanding, right judgment, and courage to serve people who were in need. She became a citizen of the United States in 1909, and was canonized in 1946, the first American citizen to be proclaimed a saint. Pope St. John XXIII Our eighth and ninth grade students along with those preparing for Confirmation learned about Pope St. John XXIII. Born Angelo Roncalli in 1881 in northern Italy, he served in World War I, and later as the Church s representative in Bulgaria and Turkey, striving to bring unity to that part of the world. Roncalli was elected pope in 1958, taking the name John XXIII. When elected, the world was a very different place than it had been even 200 years before. In the past, the church had a lot of power in the world. That wasn t the case anymore. Nations had much more power than the church and were sometimes using that power to hurt people. John believed that the church needed to speak with a stronger voice so that it could protect all people from war, violence, and poverty. He also wanted to help people who had faith learn how to talk to people who did not have faith in ways they could understand and in ways that would help everyone see the truth of God s love. John wanted the whole world to be able to hear the Good News in twentieth-century words. John XXIII had a vision and hope. He wanted the church to be a strong voice proclaiming that love in modern times to modern people. He looked to the past, present, and future in making his decision to lead the church in that direction, and as a result he convened the Second Vatican Council, an act that has brought us to where we are today!
