1 Barkley Light John W. Barkley Lodge No. 621, F & A.M. Vol. LXVI MARCH-APRIL 2015 A VIEW FROM THE EAST No. 7 Greetings from the East! I hope that this issue finds you well following the holiday season and the usual cold snap that Ohio has become known for. I am happy to report that your lodge is very busy as we now have ten new candidates since September This is a very good problem for us and the Craft to have. We will be busy, so now is your chance to see a degree or two. Please brethren, your home away from home is calling you, come and support your officers and these candidates as they progress on their path to light. Our After Holiday Party was a success as the brethren and their ladies converged on The Market in Rocky River for dinner. There was great food and fantastic company and all left the event full and happy. Our Past Master s night was also well attended with twenty-nine Past Masters joining us with their ladies for dinner and entertainment that evening. Big thanks to Brother Wurm and his staff for the wonderful dinner and service; you brethren continue to amaze me. That night, our Past Masters were introduced and greeted on the level and I was very happy to shake the hand of brethren whose smile I have not seen in some time. We were all treated to the musical stylings of the Four Season, a string quartet from Lakewood High School, and their mix of classical and 90 s rock. We have more fun events in store for you including the Family Potluck and Easter Egg Hunt, Baked Goods Auction and Dining to Donate. Please see our trestle board in this issue and visit BarkleyLodge621.org for updated information. Brethren, our annual Inspection is set for April 8, 2015 and will be conducted in the Master Mason degree. Your officer and fellow craft teams have been hard at work preparing for this night. I ask that if you are able, please join us that evening, the more Barkley Brethren the better. Please see the trestle board for more information. Until I see you at the Pillars, Brad J. Smith Worshipful Master Please Remember Your Lodge in Your Will. Thank You, Very Much!
2 2 FROM THE DESK OF YOUR SECRETARY March-April 2015 We mailed Christmas cards to all 242 widows of Barkley Lodge in mid December. 33% of the widows have replied to the note that was in with the Christmas card. We have found out 8 have moved, some cards were unable to forward and we were informed of eight widows that have passed away. Seventy of our widows live outside of Ohio. As of the first of February 15 Brethren still have not sent in their 2015 dues. These Brethren will be suspended as of mid February if their dues are not received. It is not fair to the rest of the Brethren that have paid their dues to carry them any further. On December 31st New Years Eve we did confer the Entered Apprentice degree on two new members. We did confer the Entered Apprentice degree on two more candidates on January 14th. We have received two more new petitions in January and two new petitions in February. Two of our Entered Apprentices have passed their EA exams and will be receiving their Fellow Craft degree in February. Brethren we are going to busy again in Please come visit your Lodge soon. Don t just be a dues paying member or as my minister say s don t be a C & E member, Christmas & Easter. Come and be a part of what s happening. Brethren please notify the Lodge of any and all changes in your life so we can communicate with you on a regular basis, address, , illness etc Between address changes and the number of our Brethren who have passed away since May 2014 we hope to have another up to date directory made in March Please come to our meetings and activities as often as you can and see what you have been missing. 4 4 MESSAGE FROM THE WEST I hope the winter weather has not been too hard on you this year. I have been absent from lodge because of an operation and having three more strokes. As a matter of fact, I am having a hard time focusing on writing this message. I hope all is well with you my brothers. Medical issues have sidelined me from my duties, but I hope I can be back before too long. I do have full intention of coming back and fulfilling my duties as Senior Warden. I really hate to talk about my problems, for one. I am only 56 years old. A lot of people would think I am too young to have these problems. I know there are brothers out there with medical issues a lot worse than mine. I appreciate you thinking of me. I hear from Worshipful that we have a lot of degree work to perform in the near future. It would be nice to double up on some of the degree work. I hope to see you soon, my brothers. Your Senior Warden, William A. Hill FROM THE DESK OF THE TREASURER I would like to take this time to thank everyone who helped make the AED Fundraising effort a success. Thanks to the Dining to Donate events, the donations of individual members and the various groups that meet in our building, we have raised enough to purchase the AED unit. As of the writing of this article, the unit should be on its way to our Temple. Last year, as our current Worshipful Master Brad Smith was putting together this year s calendar, he allotted April 29th as a Dining to Donate fundraiser for the AED machine. As this fundraiser is no longer needed for this purpose, and as much as I personally enjoy dining out with my Brethren, their family and friends (as I m sure you do also), we should utilize this date for another purpose. It has been brought to my attention that much of the paraphernalia used by the Lodge to conduct our meetings and exemplify the degrees is in rough shape. So grab your significant other, children, grandchildren, parents, friends and coworkers and join me and the officers of your Lodge at Ruby Tuesday on Lorain road in North Olmsted (across from Great Northern Mall) on April 29th for lunch, dinner, carryout (or all three) for an enjoyable evening of fellowship and good food. The fact that we will be raising moneys to repair/replace Lodge equipment is just an added bonus. For those of you that might not be familiar with how this works, here s the run down; find the flyer in this issue of the Light (or see me in Lodge), bring it with you to Ruby Tuesday on April 29th, enjoy your meal, give the flyer to your server when you settle the bill (it will not affect the amount in any way). At the end of the day, Ruby Tuesday will add up all the guest checks that have a flyer attached and cut the Lodge a check for 20%. Couldn t be easier. So please join us on April 29th at Ruby Tuesday. We look forward to seeing you there. Robert J. Wakefield P.M., Treasurer
5 THE FAITHFUL BREAST 5 In one of the old lectures, it is said: A Mason s breast should be a safe and sacred repository for all your just and lawful secrets. A Brother s secrets, delivered to me as such, I would keep as my own. As to betray that trust might be doing him the greatest injury he could sustain in this mortal life. Nay, it would be like the villainy of an assassin who lurks in darkness to stab his adversary when unarmed and least prepared to meet an enemy. It is true, that the secrets of a Freemason, confided as such, should be as inviolate in the breast of him who has received them as they were in his own before they were confided. But it would be wrong to conclude that in this a Freemason is placed in a position different from that which is occupied by every honorable man. No man of honor is permitted to reveal a secret, which he has received under the pledge of secrecy. Nevertheless, it is as false as it is absurd, to assert that either the man of honor or the Freemason is bound by any such obligation to protect the criminal from the vindication of the law. It must be left to every man to determine by his own conscience whether he is at liberty to betray a knowledge of facts with which he could not have become acquainted except under some such pledge. No court of law would attempt to extort a communication of facts made known by a penitent to his confessor or a client to his lawyer for such a communication would make the person communicating it infamous. In this case, Freemasonry supplies no other rule than that which is found in the acknowledged codes of moral ethics. One of the three precious jewels of a Fellow Craft symbolically teaches the initiate that the lessons which he has received from the instructive tongue of the Master are not to be listened to and lost, but carefully treasured in his heart, and that the precepts of the order constitute a covenant which he is faithfully to observe. A secret between two is a secret of God; a secret between three is everybody s secret. Author Unknown Fraternally, James T. Schultz, L. E. O. 33rd
