Even so, colonial laws restricted the practice of the Catholic faith, and just as in England, Americans who desired to be priests or nuns had to go to the Netherlands or France. As political storm clouds gathered in France, an American woman, Mother Bernardina Matthews, the prioress of the Hoogstraeten Carmel in Holland, made a brave move. With two other American nuns, her nieces, and a Dutch sister, she came to Port Tobacco, Maryland, in Within twenty years the community had grown to twenty, although by 1823 their farm failed and they had to move to Baltimore and open a school. The Carmelite order requires contemplation and cloister, so in time the school was closed. The Port Tobacco land had long since been sold, but in 1976 a community of nuns was able to return thanks to loyal neighbors who had worked for forty years for their restoration. 3 JULY 22, PARISH NEWS Did You Know All middle and high school youth are invited to come join us for an evening of mini golf, arcade, and go-karting at Cool Crest on July 29th. We will meet in the school parking lot at 4:45 and return around 7:00. Friends are welcome. Permission slips are required along with adult drivers. Classes will begin in the fall Do you know anyone who is interested in joining our church or that wants more information on the Catholic faith please have them contact Becky Winbinger at the Ministry Canter, They will need to set up an appointment with her before classes begin this fall. All High school and Middle school youth are invited to attend a free concert at the Grandview Amphitheater to see Grammy nominated Christian artist Matt Maher on August 11th. We will meet here at Nativity at 3:30 and carpool to the Amphitheater. We will return around 9:30. The concert is free but they will have concessions that can be bought there. Bring a blanket or chair. Friends are welcome also. We will need adult drivers to help. What I will say is that there is much JOY, LOVE, and MUSIC to bring to the next 51 weeks because of One Call! Nativity was fortunate enough to bring three youth from our church to this program: Naomi Gonterman, Faustina Jackson, and Isabel Wiegman. This was truly a formation program for both youth and directors of youth through music and youth ministry. I gained a wealth of knowledge through the program and was fortunate enough to work with and learn from inspiring theologians and liturgical musicians such as Fr. Michael Joncas, Tony Alonso, Diana Macalintal, Jaime Cortez, and many more! I am unbelievably thankful to the Nativity of Mary family for making this opportunity possible through generous donations as well as to the National Association for Pastoral Musicians (NPM) for granting us scholarships to attend the program. I am thankful for the kindness, hospitality, and friendship of the One Call Team, St. John s University, advocates, and youth that shared this week with us. The church sure has a bright future with these musical missionary disciples!! I am particularly grateful to these ladies' parents who support and encourage their participation in our music ministry. They are the future of our church. I look forward to bringing all of this excitement and energy to Nativity of Mary and continue to inspire full, active, and conscious participation from our Nativity family. Thank you again. 5 Protecting God's Children Workshop at Nativity of Mary Parish There will be a Protecting God's Children Workshop held at Nativity of Mary on August 22nd from 6:30-9:30 in the parish hall. Please use this link Protecting God's Children Workshop to register for the class, or a class at another location if it works better with your schedule. Please read the following information carefully to make sure you are in compliance with all diocesan volunteer requirements. Dear Volunteer: The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph is committed to providing a safe environment for children, youth, and vulnerable adults. The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph requires all volunteers, including field trip drivers, who will be in contact with children/youth or who will be supervising minors or vulnerable adults, to comply with our safe environment program requirements. These requirements include the following and are documented in a VIRTUS account: Attendance at a VIRTUS Protecting God s Children workshop within 60 days of beginning service Reading and acknowledging commitment to the Diocesan Code of Ethics Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) Providing consent to a background screening every 5 years with service contingent upon screening results Completion of the Volunteer Application found on pages 27 & 28 of the EIM if you are new to your parish or school. Special Note: If you have previously attended a Protecting God s Children workshop in our diocese or another diocese, you do NOT need to establish a new VIRTUS account. 6 JULY 22, THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In today's first reading, we hear through the prophet Jeremiah that God understands the need of the people for shepherds who will lead them to a place of spiritual depth and peace. In the Letter to the Ephesians, we hear that this desire that the people find peace in right relationship with God is for everyone. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, leads the disciples to a deserted place to rest. They had just returned from their first time of mission, and Jesus understands that they need time away with him, to share their experiences and questions, and to find refreshment of body and spirit. Yet Jesus also recognizes the needs of the crowds who follow them to that deserted place. He knows that he is the peace for which they long. SABBATH REST Sabbath. We hear the word, and many think of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. Today, we hear Jesus say to the disciples, 'Come away to a deserted place and rest a while." This is the true spirit of sabbath--to take time away, to worship God, participate in Eucharist, to be refreshed in body, mind, and spirit. Thought of in this way, sabbath is not an obligation but a privilege, a gift rather than a burden. Making sabbath begins with a commitment to put God first. That is what the shepherds that Jeremiah called for were to do, to lead the people to be people of and for God. This is what Jesus, the Good Shepherd, leads us to do, and he shows us how to do this. Not only does Jesus take time away for prayer and to "rest a while," he also spends time with the people who need him. In sabbath, we spend time with God, family, our faith community, and friends. And this spending time "with" helps us to re-orient our lives toward what is most important. FROM SABBATH TO THE REST OF THE WEEK Taking sabbath to heart has a significant impact on the way in which we live our lives, practically and spiritually. The practical part is evident on the surface. Setting aside time for Sunday Mass, quiet, and time with others requires planning and commitment. There is a practical dimension to the physical and emotional benefits of such time away from the stress and busyness of our daily lives as well. The spiritual impact of sabbath may take a little while to begin to perceive. When we put God first in our lives, everything else falls into place in a different, holier way. We begin to see God's grace in the daily circumstances of our lives, and to grow in understanding of what we are to do and how we are called to act. We know who we are in God's sight, and whose we are, as children of God. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company In today s second reading, St. Paul reminds us that Christ is creating a new world order: one that brings about relationships based on love, peace, reconciliation, hope and unity. As a Eucharistic community, we are stewards of Christ s new creation. How are we promoting peace and reconciliation in our own lives? How are we showing love for our neighbors? What are we doing to encourage unity and understanding among those with whom we gather around the Lord s Table each week? 7 JULY 22, THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME One Call institute was a wonderful experience. I had a great time with my friends and made lots of new friends too. Everyone there was so kind, welcoming, and accepting. Not only did I learn from the people I was with, who taught me to be a better person, but the leaders taught me a lot too. In our ensemble groups, my leader taught me a lot and I feel that I took a lot out of that experience with her. We heard some great songs and got to meet many of the composers and I hope that we can bring a lot of those songs back to Nativity. I also learned a lot about singing and what I can do to make myself better and others around me better as well. I can t wait to go next year. Thank you, ~Faustina Jackson Dear Nativity of Mary Parish and School, Thank you all so much for the thoughts, prayers, and donations as we made our journey to One Call. I learned so much and had so much fun with Ms. M, Naomi, and Faustina. Throughout the week, I learned not only how to be a better musician, but how to better serve God and others through music. We participated in many workshops and rehearsals during the week but my favorite times were when everyone gathered for the evening and morning prayer services. During that hour, we were all focused on one thing, praising God with each other. I made lifelong friends and memories at One Call and will always cherish and remember them. Thank you again for your support and I can t wait to share what we learned with you. ~Isabel Wiegman One Call meant a lot to me because it was the first time I saw a large group of youth gathered all together for the same reason. Everyone there was there to sing to God and it was very heartwarming to see. The most important thing that I learned from this experience is that it doesn t matter if I hit all the right notes or if my voice cracks, it matters that the congregation is actively involved in mass. One thing that I hope to bring back from this experience to our parish is that I want to involve more youth into the weekend masses.
