2 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of Universe November 25, 2018 A Reflection Thanksgiving Day is one of most unique among our holidays. In many ways, it is most religious because it's not about turkeys. It's about thanksgiving. As Christians, we even call ourselves Eucharistic People, a Thanksgiving People, because main thing we come to do around Table of Lord is to offer thanks to God at Eucharist. Eucharist is a Greek word for thanksgiving. So I think this is a very special, and maybe in some ways, most religious of our feasts, certainly most necessary. If we become an ungrateful people, that poisons our entire system. It poisons our parish. It poisons our society. If we are ungrateful, we become hostile, and we become small-minded, and we become hardhearted. In many ways, Jesus says, thanksgiving is all about life. I have come that you might have life, and have it in abundance. All is gift. All is precious. Everything in creation makes God present. Here s a reminder, simple things to be thankful for, which I read, that we might notice: I am thankful for mess to clean up after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends. I am thankful for taxes I pay because it means that I am employed. I am thankful for clos that fit a little too snug because it means I have had enough to eat. I am thankful for my shadow that watches me work because it means I am out in sunshine. I am thankful for a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home. I am thankful for all complaining I do about government because it means we have freedom of speech. November 24 December 1 Saturday 5:00 Carlito Non Sunday 7:00 Vivian Martinez 8:30 Suzanne Eckersley 10:00 Gisela and George Smith 11:30 Hiram Quevedo 6:00 Gerry Vinas Monday 8:00 Right to Life Tuesday 8:00 Kathleen M. Sieben Wednesday 8:00 Sophia Evans Thursday 8:00 Suzie Cisneros Friday 8:00 Saturday 8:00 Evelia Perez (Sick) I am thankful for spot I find at far end of parking lot because it means I am capable of walking. I am thankful for my big heating bill because it means I am warm. I am thankful for lady behind me in church who sings off-key because it means I can hear. I am thankful for piles of laundry and ironing because it means my loved-ones are nearby. I am thankful for weariness and aching muscles at end of day because it means I have been productive. I am thankful for alarm that goes off early in morning because it means I am alive. This is Thanksgiving! Let's just notice and enjoy. And let s begin to notice again, wher it is at our Thanksgiving family meal or a phone call from a family person or a friend, or just that we make it through day. Let's give thanks for gift and presence of God in our every breath. - Fr. Generoso Geronimo

4 Faith Formation Corner T R E A S U R E S F R O M O U R TRADITION Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa s sleigh at Macy s parade on Thanksgiving Day, Church doesn t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new-fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to fourth or fifth century in France (n Gaul), when Epiphany was favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collapsing n, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising everyone to attend church frequently beginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting arrival of Lord of all creation. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating Christmas feast, and second having to do with way this is organized and expressed in liturgical readings and prayers every day of season. --James Field VILLAGE HOUSE UPDATE! Our rotating interfaith shelter for medicallyfragile women will be hosted right in our neighborhood, from Nov 7-Dec 5 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and Dec 5-Jan 2 at St. Pauls. Both congregations are quite small, so while y are so generous to share ir space, y need our help as volunteers. As such, St. Martin of Tours has committed to fill all of volunteer positions (at a minimum!) on Nov 29, Dec 8, Dec 17, and Dec 26. Please consult your heart and your calendar and help fill in all of dates at and select St. Mark's or St. Paul's. Thank you for your support! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA Inquiry has begun! Have you ever wanted to ask your most challenging questions about Sacraments or Saints in a safe space with ors that are exploring wher Catholic Church may be a place to call home? If so, we meet weekly in Parish Office and all are welcome! Please contact Daniel at (408) for more info.
