J U N E Savior Divine Lutheran Church S. 88TH Ave. Palos Hills, IL FROM THE PASTOR Sunday Worship 9:30 a.m. Post : Unhindered and Free to Speak about Jesus for we cannot keep from speaking about what we have seen and heard. Acts 4:20 The event of mobilized the disciples of Jesus to go out and speak fervently for their Lord. In doing so, Peter and John were arrested for speaking about Jesus and proclaiming that in Jesus there is the resurrection of the dead. These two disciples are brought before the authorities and questioned, too, about the healing an individual. Then the Scriptures tell us that Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit as he stated his conviction that the man was healed by the name of Jesus. Those questioning him were left speechless; and in fact, ordered Peter and John not to speak any more about Jesus. Then, Peter and John asserted that they cannot but speak about Jesus. They were part of a forward movement that has not stopped even to this day. How willing are you to speak about Jesus to others? It might be about an answer to prayer or the strength you found in him during a difficult time or your hope for the life beyond death. Yes, we might experience a positive or negative reaction from others, but I would hope that we like Peter and John have the same willingness to continue being witnesses for our Lord. Pastor Marty Continuing Our Journey
2 Royal Family Kids Camps Our fundraising appeal is now in progress for Royal Family Kids Camps. This camp experience has made a significant change for many children who have been abused or neglected. Through the work of the camp counselors, these children can experience God s love. So far we have collected $490. Talk to your friends about it because they may think it is something they might be interested in (a friend just donated enough for a child to go because she heard one of our members talking about the good the camp is doing). Your donations will be accepted through June 17 th. Discipleship Group to Focus on Table Fellowship The next meeting of the class will take place on Sunday, June 10, after worship. The group is to read Chapters 3 & 4 in the book From Tablet to Table by Rev. Leonard Sweet. The chapters deal with a biblical understanding of eating meals with others. Even if you have missed the first session, you are still welcome to attend. Some of our members experienced the table fellowship on Sunday, May 20th. About 20 people were at the Pit Rib House and had dinner together and had discussion on how God is in our lives. Bus Ministry Our bus ministry fund has been dwindling down. We no longer get the grant we used to get to fund part of our cost for the bus. If anyone would care to donate to this cause it would be greatly appreciated. This is a special service offered to those who do not have cars or other transportation to come to church. Elsie s Food Pantry Items needed by the Pantry include macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, canned fruit, and cereal. Other types of food are also welcome. The food may be placed in the Amish Pie Safe. Also they need plastic grocery bags. These bags can also be left in the Pie Safe. West Suburban Symphony and Chorus will be performing Brahms German Requiem, a powerful affirmation of personal faith and victory over death. It is happening on June 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Wentz Hall, 171 E. Chicago Avenue, Naperville. $25 general admission (senior/youth discounts). See Paul Wackenhuth for more details.
3 Helping Make Our Service Flow You will note that there have been some blank spots in the section of the Gospel News titled Worship Schedule. This is due to the unavailability of people to help with these tasks. Most of the jobs are easy to do and only take a few minutes. The people doing them will continue but if more people are available the less often each person has to be available. Please look at the titles of the jobs and decide if you could or want to do any of them. Assistants: Need to be present on the Sunday they are assigned and come to church a little early to talk to Pastor Marty about the service. Altar Guild: This person would need to come to church at least minutes early to pour the wine and set up the items on the credence table. They would also have to clean the items after church and put them away. Handle the Remote: This involves watching the screens to see when to click to the next screen. If you know computers you can sit at the laptop and handle it like Cathi Predl does. Pastor would show you what is involved in this job. Bread: We need more people to make sure there is bread for communion. Presently there are only 4 people bringing bread. You do not have to bake bread but can buy it from the store. It involves getting to church at least 15 minutes early so the altar guild person can be seated before church. Ushers: Presently we only have 3 assigned ushers and definitely need more. As you can see the ushers come in a little early so they can greet the congregation. They also guild people to the altar during communion. Do You See An Opportunity for Service? As part of our mission, Savior Divine is still seeking to help people in our area with various projects. If you see a need, please contact Pastor or Cathi Predl. We can get financial assistance through Thrivent Financial Action Teams to help be a blessing to others.
4 Delegates for Synod Assembly The Synod Assembly will be held at the Tinley Park Convention Center on June 8 and June 9. Savior Divine is entitled to two delegates in addition to the pastor. If you would be interested in going, please contact Pastor Marty for more information. We were really red! We followed our tradition of wearing red and decorating for with the red balloons and red geraniums. Our service was made more majestic with not only Paul Wackenhuth playing and the choir singing but we had the addition of Chris Doherty and Linda Good playing. Here is a riddle to think about this month (answer to come next month). When is a piece of wood like a queen? Here is the answer to last month's riddle. What is faster: heat or cold? Answer: Anyone can catch a cold.
5 Our roof repairs were completed. Tom Metlow was up on the roof a couple of days getting rid of all the accumulated leaves and debris and the standing water from the winter. He then repaired the spots were the water was coming into the church. He sealed the edges and spread the aluminum coating to protect the roof. Hopefully everything will stay dry during the summer. He will check the roof again in the fall after the leaves have all fallen and make sure all the drains are clear and the leaves are off the roof. The Rev. A. Craig Settlage Fund for Leaders Established Rachel Settlage has established an A. Craig Settlage Fund for Leaders Memorial Scholarship Fund. This fund is being established since theological education was very important to Pastor Settlage. You are welcome to contribute to this fund. It will help to honor Craig s memory and assist those men and women seeking to serve God and the church through ministry. Checks may be made payable to ELCA Endowment Fund and include on the Memo line A. Craig Settlage Scholarship Fund. Mail your check to EFPT Receipts, P.O. Box 1806, Merrifield, VA
