1 S E P T E M B E R Savior Divine Lutheran Church S. 88TH Ave. Palos Hills, IL FROM THE PASTOR Sunday Worship 9:30 a.m. The ELCA Enters the World of Podcasting The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America like many other organizations has sought to make use of social media in order to make connections with people. I personally follow the ELCA s Facebook Page as well as the ELCA s presence on Instagram. The ELCA is now embarking on something new with podcasting. This is a recorded conversation that one can listen to in order to gain more knowledge about the work of our church. The podcast is called Three Sides and will be made available on a monthly basis. It will feature stories of the ELCA and present diverse views across our church. Stories will come from members, from the work of congregations, and from our global companions. The podcasts can be found in itunes, Spotify, and Stitcher. If you have a smartphone, with the podcast app you can search for Three Sides and subscribe to receive the monthly recordings. The first session will focus on women who lead in the church. Pastor Marty Continuing Our Journey

2 Discipleship Emphasis The season of would have us think of how the Holy Spirit is at work in our world today and especially in our surrounding communities. Where do you see the in-breaking of God s kingdom today? Where do you see hope being given to people, advocacy is being done, or acts of kindness are taking place? You are being asked to sharpen your spiritual eyes. Please take note of what you observe or what you might read in the local papers. You can record in your journal and also bring to my attention. To go a step further, do you see how you might take a photo of such work being done and submit to the church office? We will find a way to display these photos. Pastor Marty 2 God s Work, Our Hands Gearing up for Service in our Area Savior Divine along with many other ELCA congregations throughout the nation will be embarking on a day of service on Sunday, September 9. Members will help in the afternoon to clean a homeless shelter at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Worth in order to get it ready for its opening to clients. The shelter works with the BEDS-PLUS program. We will also be assisting at the Hickory Hills Movie Night on Saturday, September 8 from 7:00 9:30 p.m. to help in selling concessions. If you could help, please sign the sheet in the living room area of the church or call the church office. Discipleship Group to Start a New Book The group will be starting a new class on September 23 after worship. The focus of the group will be on the book The Daniel Plan. This book, written by Pastor Rick Warren, will help us to look at five areas of life that would contribute to our well-being. The five areas are Faith, Fitness, Food, Focus, and Friends. If you would like a copy of the book, please contact Pastor Marty. The cost of the book is $14. Prayer Requests When requesting prayers be said for friends or family, please make sure you fill out the Prayer Request sheet on the table in the entry way. It is important that you fill out the sheet in it s entirety so the prayer group can follow up later on to see if the person still needs or wants to continue to be on the list. Elsie s Food Pantry Items needed by the Pantry include macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, canned fruit, and cereal. Other types of food are also welcome. The food may be placed in the Amish Pie Safe. Also they need plastic grocery bags. These bags can also be left in the Pie Safe.

3 3 Dorothea F. Pauschke Called to Eternal Glory Pastor Marty s mother was called to her eternal glory on August 2. Her funeral was held at Savior Divine on August 6. The interment was held at Clarendon Hills Cemetery in Darien, IL. Pastor Marty would like to express his deep gratitude for those who attended the service as well as for the expression of sympathy conveyed in cards and for the memorial gifts that were given. Certain electronics cannot be recycled, contact the Adult Services Desk at (708) ext. 120 for more information Repair and Replace - We are now embarking on new goals for the maintenance of the fixtures and the kitchen stove. The women s bathroom has had to have the toilets replaced (due to old age) and the stove in the kitchen needs to be replaced (this was purchased used for the old church, so it has served us well for many years). CROP Walk The Southwest Suburban CROP Hunger Walk will be held on October 14 at 2 p.m. and will begin at Christ Lutheran Church in Orland Park. The route is a 5K walk. Envelopes will be available on the entryway table in the near future. If you are not walking, please consider sponsoring a walker. Elsie s Food Pantry has been one of the pantries receiving funds raised from the Walk.

4 4 CHURCH PICNIC The annual church picnic this year will be held on Sunday, September 16 th with Moraine Valley Community Church following a combined worship service at 10:30 that day. Fried chicken will again be catered. You can still bring you own meat dish if you prefer, but if you would like the church to provide fried chicken for you, be sure to indicate your desire on the sign-up list in the back of the church. Also indicate if you will be bringing a salad, appetizer or dessert to share. Plates napkins, cups, plasticware, soft drinks, water, beer and coffee will be provided. (A free-will offering will be taken to cover this cost.) Favorites water balloon toss and egg-toss are planned for outdoors. Driving marshmallows from a tee is planned also, as well as other outdoor games for adults and children--such as bean bags and ladderball. Bingo and whatever games you would like to bring are scheduled for indoors. The traditional door prizes will be distributed too, for which we are asking a donation of any size that will be donated to the Food Pantry. So plan to stay after the worship service September 16 th. Bring the entire family, invite your friends, and plan to have a fun-filled afternoon! As always, any way you can help in setting up beforehand, cleaning up afterward, securing door prizes, or suggesting new ideas will be appreciated. You can speak to me, or to any of the committee members: Matt Birk, Beth Heinrich, Tony Juarez, or Bev Yazumbek. Paul Wackenhuth Picnic Co-ordinator The new cabinet (new to us anyway) Thanks to Cathi Predl for putting us in contact with the person that had a cabinet we can use. (the price was right Free). This will be used to hold the paper and bulletin covers and other items that are now creating a clustered look in the area that hold the coats. We also want to thank Chris Doherty and his friend. These two young men went and picked up the cabinet and brought it to church and carried it into the building (it weighs quite a bit as it is wood). This is part of getting the living room area and the sanctuary to not look so disheveled.

5 5 Helping Make Our Service Flow You will note that there have been some blank spots in the section of the Gospel News titled Worship Schedule. This is due to the unavailability of people to help with these tasks. Most of the jobs are easy to do and only take a few minutes. The people doing them will continue but if more people are available the less often each person has to be available. Please look at the titles of the jobs and decide if you could or want to do any of them. Assistants: Need to be present on the Sunday they are assigned and come to church a little early to talk to Pastor Marty about the service. Altar Guild: This person would need to come to church at least minutes early to pour the wine and set up the items on the credence table. He or she would also have to clean the items after church and put them away. Handle the Remote: This involves watching the screens to see when to click to the next screen. If you know computers, you can sit at the laptop and handle it like Cathi Predl does. Pastor would show you what is involved in this job. Bread: We need more people to make sure there is bread for communion. Presently there are only 4 people bringing bread. You do not have to bake bread but can buy it from the store. It involves getting to church at least 15 minutes early so the altar guild person can be seated before church. Ushers: Presently we only have 4 assigned ushers and definitely need more. As you can see, the ushers come in a little early so they can greet the congregation. They also guide people to the altar during communion.

6 6 What I want my church to be My church is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a church with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the tasks of being all the things that I want my church to be. Updating our Constitution and Bylaws As you know, the council has been working on updating our church Constitution and Bylaws. A date will be selected for when a congregational meeting can be held in order to approve the new constitution and bylaws. Here is a riddle to think about this month (answer to come next month). What do the letter t and an island have in common? Here is the answer to last month's riddle. You throw away the outside and cook the inside. Then you eat the outside and throw away the inside. What did you eat? Answer: Corn on the cob.
