June 2017 Newsletter - brings Druids togeer Dear IGLD Broers and Sisters Kay Hagby, Grand President World Congress 2020 Malmõ Too many mons have passed since our latest Newsletter, but wi reason. We are very grateful for e positive response from e Swedish national Order at ey will host is arrangement. The Congress will be held during week 32, e first week of August 2020, but more details will follow later. In is issue of e Newsletter you will find a presentation of Malmö, more IGLD history, a report from e German IGLD meeting in April and oer news snippets. I wish you all a nice summer (and winter in e souern hemisphere), and I am very much looking forward to seeing some of you in Copenhagen Fraternal greetings in U P C Kay Hagby Grand President

Malmö - Congress city 2020 Translated and edited from an article in Svensk Druidtidning written by Bro. Lars Grefmar/Ad Astra Lodge, Malmö Malmö is Druidic history. Here e Swedish Druid Order was born in And here is now our main office of e Order. The Grand Lodge Sydborgen, our five basic lodges Ad Astra (1904); Mimer (1913); Vasa (1920); Wales (1950) and Hesperus (1943), e women lodge Isolde, e women's club and e chancellery office in our own house. Our Druid house, built in 1924, is situated between e Dringenberg house wi basement vaults from e 13 century and e wellpreserved Rosenvrier house from e 16 century. We are opposite to e coin master Jörgen Kock's house from e same century, which also faces e main square wi e City Hall. Everying supervised by Karl X Gustav, who conquerred Skaane from e Danes in We are in Malmö's nucleus. It was along Västergatan e structure of a town wi neighbourhoods, fields and streets began to grow a ousand years ago. In e extension of Västergatan west, Malmöhus Castle dates from e 1300s. Around e oldest part of Malmö flows e canals, which are partly formed by old moats, and partly dig after e city's fortifications were dismantled in e early 1800s. Here you can have guided tours or rent floats, rowboats, canoes and water bikes. In 1904 when e Druid Order came to town, people lived in Malmö. A hundred years later, just before e opening of e Öresund Bridge in 2000, we were a quarter of a million. And today we have grown anoer ! However, in e 1970s and 80s, Malmö lost inhabitants and was en perceived as a tired, grey and worn industrial and working city. At e same time, e shutting down process of ship building, textile industry and e limestone and cement industry began. A business crisis at lasted until e mid 90's. Then Malmö's transformation began from a crisis of industry into a modern, ecofriendly, knowledge-oriented and cultural city. Öresund Bridge, University College, City Tunnel and Malmö Arena gave jobs and fai for e future. Almost as a symbol, e Kockumskran, once e world's largest gantry crane, was replaced wi Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso (2005), a 190 meter high spiralbuilt residential building. Malmö is a small big city wi short distances. A walking and cycling city. Let us, based on e Druid house, visit some of e city's new converted environments.

Malmö - Congress city 2020 We start by walking around e corner to Vallgatan, where our "order hotel" is located. From here, visiting broers have been able to follow e construction of Malmö Live, or "Malmhattan" for which e public has renamed it for some years. A city district wi residential apartments, a commercial centre, hotel, congress centre and a new concert hall. Next to it, in e old harbour offices, now e World Maritime University, a world-leading independent UN university for education and research in global shipping. We continue our walk a few minutes, to e west harbour, which currently employs more people an previously worked wi shipbuilding. The western harbour borders a two kilometre long sandy beach wi protective duvets and an even larger lawn, Ribban. Baing and all kinds of ball and leisure activities, but also space for bo championships in e field competitions and jump competitions at e highest international level. But we turn back and go along Orkanen College, which gets university status next year. Down into e City Tunnel (2010) to go by train 6 km to Hyllie, e last station before e Öresund bridge and Kastrup airport. After 5 minutes and only a few steps, we reach Malmö Arena (2008). Around e arena, a new city in e city grows wi many ecofriendly and spectacular buildings, including Emporia, 2012 Scandinavia's largest shopping mall. However, we drop at and instead take out a rental bicycle and trample on e stadium area, Europe's largest sports area wi courts and halls for football, handball, ice hockey, aletics, bowling and more. We leave e bike in a renter and walk rough Pildammsparken, one of Malmö's major central park facilities. We pass Mimer's well from 1913 and FC Rosengårds home-ground. And admires e Opera's stylish building from We pass e Library Building, take a look to e left and enjoy e mosaic of e Crown Prince's 25-storey scraper. The facade blends so well wi e blue sky. The complex replaced e regiment barracks 55 years ago, and was en e country's highest residential building. Crossing e canal between e castle park and e King's park and passing e Casino, we are just back in Västergatan where we started. Our short city tour of Malmö is at its end. There are lots of oer ings we could tell you or show you, but instead we welcome you to see and experience

In memory of Broer Barry Wood ( ) A good friend and broer, Barry Wood, passed quietly away on March 7. For many years Barry was a prominent and important broer of AOD in UK, and for us in IGLD he was an omnipresent broer wi a great interest in our international work. In New Zealand last year his dream of once again being able to invite IGLD to hold a congress in England came true. Wi his usual enusiasm he was planning for is to happen in Ashford, until his too early decease and e subsequent cancellation of ese plans. Barry Wood will be deeply missed in our midst and is being remembered in our IGLD history as a man of integrity and broerly conduct. Kay Hagby Grand President SELF RESPECT. As a Druid you should know yourself, as said by Socrates as rule number one, and to respect yourself as a condition for respecting oer people. Wi respect we mean including respect. Respect for people for just what ey are - human being, and try to understand em by listening to em. This is essential if we want to achieve piece and to really know people around you. Self respect means to risk being honest - first of all to yourself. But honesty is a mutual process which for broers in e Order of Druids is essential. Many small and also big conflicts, hate, irritation and misunderstandings could be avoided by respecting and listening to each oer. Avoid hard and unfriendly words try a smile. A smile does not cost anying but make e receiver rich. It takes only a moment but will be remembered forever. A smile gives happiness in your home, gives goodwill in business and seal friendship and broerhood. IGLD is an organization for rust and friendship worldwide wi broers being ere for you whenever you want. ROE Reidar Bratli

- from Germany New Druid Lodge and IGLD Meeting in Germany The foundation of a new lodge is one of e most important events in any national Druid Order. Since e beginning of e current century 14 local lodges have been installed in Germany, and all of eir start-ups were very well attended. But e event, at happened during e last Aprilweekend in Bad Vilbel, a small spa-town of inhabitants at e norern edge of Frankfurt, exceeded all of em, e number of participants surprised - but by no means overwhelmed - e organizers. Up to 170 guests were present, among em leading members and visiting broers of e Druid Orders of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Germany. Those ree days in Bad Vilbel were suitable to cultivate or to renew international friendship and to experience what it means to belong to e world-wide community of Druids. Already Friday, April, 28, can be regarded as a first highlight, when round about 100 participants met for a cozy evening in a typical guest house at e edge of Frankfurt. They were able to taste e local apple wine (if ey were courageous enough) and to enjoy regional dishes. And ey did! The main event of e installation was e ritual meeting on Saturday, March, 29, when e new lodge named Zu den Quellen (Quellen means springs, wi regard to e mineral springs of e town) has been brought to life in a solemn form. The large and splendid main hall of e impressive Freemason Temple in Frankfurt was filled to e last place, when e President of e G e r m a n D r u i d O r d e r, b r o t h e r F r a n k Graffenberger, opened e meeting which was attended by a total of 110 broers. He was proud to welcome e leading IGLD officers Grand President, broer Kay Hagby, Grand Secretary, broer Geir Kaare Jordheim and Grand Treasurer broer Per-Arne Mejgren, IGLD Grand Vice Presidents from Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and Germany, visiting broers from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, England and Switzerland and last but not least officers from 6 German Grand Lodges and broers from 31 local lodges. Prior e actual founding act e officials of e new lodge were introduced to eir offices. In many friendly greetings, ey were given good wishes for eir future activities. The founding members and e broers of e Wilhelm- Meister-Loge, Frankfurt, who had only made e creation of e new lodge, also deserve anks and recognition for eir tireless efforts.

- from Germany Broers of e new Lodge Zu den Quellen Photo: Bro Udo Roos The accompanying partners were given e chance to participate in a guided tour in Bad Vilbel during is time. 49 ladies have been introduced to e city`s sights in a very nice and interesting way. In e afternoon a donation of 2,500 was handed over to e music school of e city in an official ceremonial act in e Kurhaus of Bad Vilbel. The amount will be used for music education in e kindergarten. The lord major of e city expressed wi joyous words at he is very glad to have a Druid Lodge in his city. He wished e broers grow and success. Anoer highlight was e banquet in e evening, which also took place in e Kurhaus. In addition to a tasty buffet it was above all e excellent music band, which contributed to e good mood among e participants. Hard-working dancers got eir money`s wor! The next day, Sunday, April, 30, was reserved for e International Grand Lodge of Druidism, for anoer meeting in e Freemason Temple in Frankfurt. The international ritual meeting was chaired and sovereignly carried out by e presidency of e German Druid Order. In e traditional ceremonial ritual of e IGLD, 40 new members have been introduced to our international broerhood. In addition to 37 German broers ere was one broer each from Sweden, Finland and Switzerland. It is not often e case, at so many international officers are present on such an occasion. In his speech, e Grand President of IGLD, broer Kay Hagby was very pleased wi is possibility of being able to demonstrate what e value and e advantage for each broer is to be a member of e IGLD. We have here e best example of understanding and friendship across borders. The breren rose from eir places in honor and in commemoration of e IGLD Grand Director of Ceremonies and longtime Grand Vice President of e A.O.D. England, Broer Barry Wood, who passed away on e 7 of March The fact at e President of e German Druid Order, broer Frank Graffenberger, in spite of his visibly restricted state of heal, guided is and all oer meetings in a sovereign manner demanded respect from e participants and received heartfelt applause. By a joint meal togeer wi e new IGLD members ended a remarkable meeting and at e same time a weekend full of events, which will be long remembered. Bro Dieter Hennecke

- from our historic les... INTERNATIONAL DRUIDISM Part II The Third Meeting of e International Grand Lodge at Altona, Germany, e 12 and 13 July, Ten years had elapsed since e last session of e International Grand Lodge at London; years of struggle, care : and misery for e German people and for e victorious countries too.. In after e end of e terrible World War, e leader of e Swedish Order of Druids tried to refasten e torn bonds of e International union. The German Lodges agreed to e resump.. tien of e interrupted relations between e countries which were formerly united. The Supreme Arch of e. U.S.A., Bro. W. Schmidt, made at e end of 1920 e proposal immediately to begin wi e reunion of e American, e Swedish and e German Orders. The next meeting of e delegates might take place in Germany. Accordingly e session of e International Grand Lodge was held at Hamburg- Altona in july, The above ree mentioned countries were represented, each country by ree delegates. The presidentship was [ying in e hands of Germany. The President, Bro. Hugo Wiese, emphasised in his' address at e International Union was not formed to equalise. Each country was to retain its national peculiarities; neier financial nor political ti es were to be entered into. The sole purpose of our union is to bring e Druids of all e world into doser contact and by rigidly excluding all questions of a political or religious nature to cultivate e spirit of toleration. The Druids of all e world are joined on e basis of mutual hel p and we are united to broadcast and to strengen e sublime principles of Druidism. The following resolutions were passed:- 1. Each country bears its own expenses for e representatives to e International Grand Lodge. 2. Travelling Breren, who are in possession of a valid travelling card, in which latter claims on sickness benefit and oer grants must be clearly stated, may receive ese payments, if necessary, in foreign countries from e respective branch of e Order, if found expedient after telegraphic enquiries have be en made respecting e applicant. Payment is made against reefold receipt. The amount paid is to be refunded immediately. To be valid e travelling card must contain e visum of e Lodge, e Grand Lodge and e Imperial Grand Lodge. Each country has to choose e wording according to e rules of its own constitutional laws.

- from our historic les... Newsletter 3. It shall be left to e American and to 'e Swedish Breren to renew e former International connections; e German Order of Druids will endeavour to renew its relation to California. On e oer hand e Officers of e International Grand Lodge will endeavour to re-establish e connection wi Australia and New Zealand. 4. The resolutions of e former sessions regarding e reception of members to e International Grand Lodge and e respective agreement between e German and e American Order of Druids dated 1 st October, 1907, are still valid. The representatives of e Swedish Imperial Grand Lodge decided to organise ese resolutions as binding on Sweden. 5. A Committee consisting of e Breren, Dr. Erichsen and Carl Schroeder (Germany) and Bro. Paulsen (America) was formed to study e history of e Druidic ritual. The proposals for e ritual, sign of recognition and entry sign for e International Grand Lodge were accepted after slight al terations. 6. Regarding e regalias e following resolution was passed : As desirable as uniformity of e regalia appears to be, it must be left under e existing circumstances to e discretion of e single countries to choose e regalia according to eir individual requirements and druidical ideas. 7. Bro. W. Schmidt, Arnerica, holds a referee about e problems of e Orders of Druids. He pointed out at Druidism must always have an ideal foundation, an ideal, however, which los es itself in e clouds is to be avoided. A Broer Druid must always keep in dose contact wi e realities of life. The main object of every Druid ought to be to stri ve to be a better man. 8. It was agreed at e ofhces of International Grand Secretary and Grand Treasurer were to be united. The ballot for e Officers of e International Grand Lodge had e following result :- President: Bro. Hugo Wiese, Germany. Vice-President: Bro. William Schmidt, America. Grand Secretary and Treasurer: Bro. Aug. Bjork, Sweden. 3 It was resolved at e next session of e International Grand Lodge was to take place in 1928 at Malmo, Sweden. Should, however, England rejoin e International Grand Lodge, e session might be held at an earlier date, perhaps in ree years. Mailadress: igldnews@druid.no Part 3 in next number.
