I.G.L.D. N e w s l e t t e r I/2013 January 2013 Dear IGLD Members, Dear Brothers and Sisters, Hopefully all of you were able to enjoy the festive season healthy and in a good condition and could now expectantly start the way into The Executive Committee of the IGLD would like to send you its best wishes for your Lodges, your families and for yourself as well. Let us try to continue the work for international Druidism in a spirit of brotherhood and friendship and let us maintain the good feelings we got during the Copenhagen Congress last year. Without any doubt the atmosphere within our international organization has perceptibly increased and the cooperation between the Affiliated National Orders of IGLD runs satisfying and without problems. First of all please receive the greetings of our worthy Grand President Bro Bob Stewart: Dear Bretheren, Fraternal greetings to you all. I trust that you had a relaxing and enjoyable Xmas and New Year. While you are suffering the cold of Winter, we here in New Zealand are enjoying warm Summery weather, but no doubt that that will change in due course. Preparations for 2016 are progressing well, and from now on, each Newsletter will have a short summary of progress, and some information on Nelson, and New Zealand in general. Please ensure that all the Brothers are aware of the Newsletter, and that it is available to all. Some of us will be attending the Australia/ New Zealand Congress in Western Australia, and Reports of this will be in the next Newsletter. Our worthy Grand Secretary Bro. Dieter Hennecke will be there, so he will be taking many notes of happenings,(and no doubt any misdemeanours) taking place during both the Congress, and the Sightseeing Tour after. Here in New Zealand, we do not take a Summer break, so our Lodges meet regularly all year round. I follow with great interest the happenings and inter Lodge Meetings and Celebrations that are reported to me, and I congratulate the enthusiasm and goodwill shown by differing Countries and Lodges. To me, this is Druidism working well. Take care, and keep smiling, in Unity, Peace and Concord Bro. Bob Stewart, GP.

Dear members, there are 3 years left until the XVII IGLD World Congress will take place. But I am asked several times by brothers from different countries for information about the intended events in Nelson In this Newsletter we are going to start a series of reports on the state of things, demonstration of possibilities and probably advice if requested. As an attachment you will find a description of Nelson, the host city of the congress, which is likely to arouse your curiosity. There were a lot of remarkable events in 2012 and it is impossible to mention all of them in the Newsletter. But, dear brothers and sisters, I would be sorry if one of them is missing for want of information. Please be so kind and inform your Grand Secretary in due time about the upcoming events in 2013 and try to help me keeping the Newsletter interesting for our members and the fellow Druids anywhere. In 2012 the Norwegian FGDO was the hosting order for the annual meeting of the Scandinavian Grand Lodge of Druidism (SGLD) which was held on 6 th Oct. in Hønefoss, a small town with inhabitants situated 70 km northwest from Oslo. The name of the local Druid Lodge is Hringar and its rooms have been used for both of the events during this weekend. There were two remarkable meetings, the first one starting on Friday 5 th Oct. 6 p.m. as a seven degree`s Meeting with 64 knights present. In a solemn ritual performance 3 new brothers have been initiated in the highest degree of our Order, among them a brother from Switzerland. This meeting and the IGLD Meeting on Saturday was joined by the Presidents of 4 National Orders (Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany), 2 IGLD Grand Vice Presidents (England and Switzerland) and 3 IGLD Officers (Grand Secretary, Grand Treasurer and Grand Herald). Photo: Bro Dieter Hennecke The ritual SGLD Meeting started on Saturday, 6 th Oct., at noon, and it took 2 ½ hours of time to initiate 61 new members - devides in 3 groups- into the IGLD. The Initiation Ceremony was presented as perfect as the one of the Knight degree in the evening before. The three Scandinavian members of SGLD presented reports about the current situation within their orders and thus made an update of the development. Actually ( ) the Norwegian Order has brothers, and of them are members of the IGLD. This is an extraordinary high rate of 37 %. One of the 12 Grand Lodges and three of the 54 local lodges are situated in Iceland.

There are 2 lodges in advance in Norway, one in Voss and an additionally one which will be the third one in town - in Larvik. The FGDO is proud and happy about owing a representative House of the Druid Order in Sandefjord which is not only a place for the administration of the Order but a wonderful meeting place for the brothers as well. In 2012 another donation to the prostate Cancer research was given to the National Radium Hospital. There was a highlight more in this meeting: The former Grand President of IGLD, Bro Tor Gjelvik has been distinguished with the highest decoration the Norwegian Druid Order has to offer. He became a honorary member of his Order. This position is reserved for only 7 Brothers who have worked in extraordinary manner for the order. By hearing the druidic biography of Brother Tor the members could learn what a man of our Druid Order is able to do in the course of his membership. There has been an extremely friendly and fraternal atmosphere during the 2 days and the participants gratefully remember a perfect organization and supply made by the members of Lodge Hringar. In the 4 months between the last Newsletters the FGDO Norway has got another two new local Druid Lodges: Lodge Taiga on 11 th Sept. as a second one in the town of Elverum, situated in the eastern part of Norway and Lodge Skjalksson on 27 th Oct. as a third one in Bryne close to the western coast, south of Stavanger. Bryne has about inhabitants. Iceland With the permission of the Norwegian Druid Order -still the mother-order - the Iceland Druids are going to install a new lodge in Keflavik, close to the Reykjavik International Airport. This will be the 4 th local lodge of the Grand Lodge Ísafold. Actually 15 brothers are prepared to form the new lodge and they have already set up positions for the leading members. Another 4 candidates are waiting for their initiation. The way it looks the installation will be in September Sweden According to the report given in Hønefoss the Swedish Druid Order has (Oct.2012) brothers in 70 local lodges and 911(19%) of them are members of the IGLD. In May 2011 the leadership of the Order has created a service group in order to verify the background of the 11 Grand Lodges. The group has found out a number of critical points and has in May 2012 presented some different proposals concerning the geographical arrangement of the Grand Lodges and the current number of their local lodges as well. All of the members of the Swedish Druid Order had been requested to show their opinion or to make other proposals which have been discussed by the service group. The result was presented to the leading members of the order in spring The aim is to submit a paper during the National Meeting in August 2013 which leads to a satisfying decision. All of the Swedish Grand Lodges have installed new officers in the first months of They have started several methods of education in druidic matters. The FGDO Sweden has got a scholarship for research and prevention of Prostate Cancer. In 2012 the fond owns a stock of SEK ( / ) and it is the intension to raise the fund to SEK (87.000/70.200) until 2013.

As an annex of the December edition of the Swedish Druid Magazine the FGDO has published a flyer for the members in which information is to be found to a number of situations in connection with ritual meetings, dresscode, how to accost officers of the Druid Order and in which order of merit, and several other notices and directions. The Leader of the Swedish FGDO, Bro Björn Cederberg, is looking back to a successful year and can be very satisfied with the efficiency of the 70 local lodges and 11 Grand Lodges. Actually there are two important events in 2013: 2 nd to 4 th August the General Meeting of the Order in Lund including the election of the leading officers and the 100 year`s anniversary of the Lodge Mimer in Malmö in November. Denmark For a period of at least three years prior Copenhagen 2012 the ideological work of the Danish Druid Order had to be subordinated to the efforts for the (successful) XXVII IGLD World Congress. Now it seems to be high time to concentrate on problems within the fraternity of the 10 local lodges in Denmark. In 2011 there were some serious struggles within and between some of the former 5 lodges in Copenhagen. The main problems seem to be solved, but only 2 lodges of the Danish Capital survived. The 2 lodges on the isle of Funen and the 5 lodges in Jutland are running well and fortunately they are free from machinations like those on Zealand. But the loss of members of the Danish FGDO has reached a critical point, indeed. With 281 remaining brothers it is high time to apply the newly developed concept in order to recruit a number of new members. The 2 Grand Lodges SELANDIA and JUTLANDIA are prepared to provide assistance as far as they are able to. Germany The answer to a list of questions asked by the editors of the Swedish Druid Magazine in order to make an issue on our international situation shows the following facts concerning the current situation of the German Druid Order: Actually there are 60 local lodges in Germany. The average number of membership is between 10 and 55 brothers with an average age of 64.3 years (span from 25 to 91 years). Most of the lodges use to meet every week, others every fortnight. There are 15 lodges working in a house of their own. Most of the remaining lodges use to rent rooms in buildings of Free Masons or Odd Fellows, some of them are making shift with hotel rooms. The strategy of recruiting new members is depending on the local situation. Some of the lodges succeed in using advertisements in newspapers but the most successful way of gaining new brothers is the personal contact. In 2012 the leadership of the order has offered workshops for Grand and Noble Arches as a kind of training for recruiting and for public relation as well. There were several important events in 2012 within the German Druid Order. But the decidedly most popular one happened from 30 th November to 2 nd December in the town of Wolfenbüttel. The local lodge Zur Bundestreue could celebrate its 100 years anniversary and at the same time the 50 th annual donation of the so called Fir Tree of Peace given by the Norwegian lodge Bardstjernen, Drammen, to the local lodge and later on in an official act to the citizens of Wolfenbüttel. I would like to give a short report about this event, which I think was the Event of the Year for the German Druid Order. It started with a Seven Degree Meeting on Friday in

the new lodge building in Brunswick with an attendance of 23 German 1 Norwegian and 2 Swiss Knights. Two new brothers have been initiated in the highest degree of our order. After the meeting we went back to Wolfenbüttel (only 15 km to go) in order to join the reception party for the participants of the anniversary who already arrived the day before. And - the lodge building was full of people from the ground floor up to the roof! The Norwegian brothers and sisters arrived in an own bus filled with 53 persons. The Saturday started with a ritual meeting at 10:00 a.m. in a historic building because the lodge house was absolutely too small for more than 140 brothers. This meeting was attended by: All of the leading members of the German Druid Order, 6 out of 8 German Grand Lodges, members of 28 local German lodges, the President of the Norwegian Order, Bro Kay Hagby all of the officers of 2 Norwegian Grand Lodges, members of 9 local Norwegian lodges, 3 Brothers from Finland and 4 Brothers from Switzerland. Participants oft the Ritual Meeting; Photo: Bro Horst Alsleben Many speeches and addresses were made during this meeting. The Grand President of IGLD, Bro Bob Stewart, had sent an address which has been carried forward by the Grand Secretary. The banquet in the evening took place in the biggest banqueting-hall of the town with nearly 250 participants, among them 53 from Norway, and it was well organized including an attractive program. On Sunday 11:00 a.m. the brothers, together with their spouses, gathered in the main hall of the famous Lessing-Library for an official reception on the occasion of the Centenary of Lodge "Zur Bundestreue". The main speech was held by a Member of Parliament who is living in Wolfenbüttel - and he did a very good job, very friendly to the Druid Order and without mentioning any political opinion or statement. The speech of the Burgomaster of Wolfenbüttel when having received the Fir Tree of Peace on the wonderful market place came definitely from his heart. What he told his citizens about the Druid Order and the relationship between the German and Norwegian Lodges was a perfect public relation for Druidism! After this event there

was a reception in a former school given by the mayor where all the Norwegian guests received a special present. Fir Tree of Peace Photo: Bro Horst Alsleben The anniversary in Wolfenbüttel is appropriate for a foretaste for the next comparable event: 125 years Lodge Zur Burg Hohenzollern in Nuremberg on 13th April, Please find more information under Switzerland The anniversary of 100 Years of Druidism in Switzerland was definitely the highlight of the year Several perceptions gained by preparing and organizing the event have led the leadership of the Swiss Druid Order (SDO) to revise some of the principles of the order. Thus the brothers of the SDO have got a new idealistic vision which is written in a modern and timely text. Caused by the Hans-Waldmann-Lodge, Zurich, have the preparation for an establishment of a new lodge in Arbon, situated in eastern Switzerland, close to the Lake Constance been successfully started on 17th Oct The name of the 12th loge in Switzerland will be Salix-Alba-Lodge. The annual Druid`s Day on 17th Nov in Bern has been well attended, also by brothers from Germany. The participants visited the Munster Church of the Swiss Capital and had a ritual meeting and additionally an interesting discussion. On 19th Nov 2012 the leading members of the order had its last annual meeting. It was decided that in January 2013 a special meeting will be convened with the aim of a better organization of the SDO and in order to find a way to make the Druid Order more attractive. In 2013 an IGLD Meeting with international participation will be held. England The Swedish Brother John-Ture Karlsson was very much impressed by the warm and fraternal welcome he got when coming to Margate in order to visit the fellow Druids in this town situated in the very south of England, the motherland of Druidism. He was impressed as well by The Unity House. As their common property it is the Meeting Hall of the 4 local lodges in Margate: Beaconsfield Lodge, Providence Lodge, St Aethelbyrht Lodge and Queen of Thanet Lodge. The Margate Lodges are members of the Thanet Grand Lodge within the A.O.D. The Lodge Hall is big enough for all kinds of events and it is well equipped with furniture in an old English style which reminds Bro Karlsson of a classical Pub. He joined a ritual meeting which was

held seriously and in dignity followed by an amusing part with lottery, music and songs which make him feel very comfortable and relaxed. Bro Karlsson was grateful having got the opportunity to convince himself of the good moods of the Margate Druids and their honest attitude as well. Australia The Bunbury Druids in Western Australia are looking forward to meeting a lot of IGLD members from Australia and New Zealand (and a visiting couple from Germany) in order to join the Australian & New Zealand IGLD Conference in Mandurah from 11 th to 14 th March Mandurah is located 74 km south of Perth. It is the vibrant, coastal heart of the Peel Region. The Congress will be held at the Atrium Hotel. As the social part a 5 days after congress bus tour will be arranged to the South West Region with Albany as most southern place. This part of Australia is not only well known by wonderful beaches but also by its great number of wineries cultivating excellent wines like Sauvignon Blanc or the classical Cabernets. A detailed report can be expected in the next Newsletter. New Zealand North Islands IGLD met in Nelson on 22 nd October 2012 with 18 members and 6 members of South Island IGLD. It has been a great meeting and evening meal in the Maitai Lodge Hall. The next morning sightseeing had been arranged before having a picnic lunch at a lovely spot called Rabbit Island. Coming back there was another meal and social night in the Lodge Hall. Monday night was the meeting of Maitai Lodge Druids which several of the visiting members stayed on and enjoyed the comradeship of fellow Druids. Discussions took place to planning the IGLD World Congress to be held in Nelson in March Sister Dolly Dyer from Hamilton joined all activities. As mentioned before Dolly turns 100 years of age on Several of those present are also planning to visit Western Australia in March 2013 for the Australian & New Zealand IGLD Meeting. Meeting in Maitai Lodge Hall; Photo: June Stewart The next NZ IGLD Meeting will be on 2 nd February in the small town of Te Puke, North Island, just out from Tauranga and well known for Kiwi Fruit. USA/California The California Druids are mourning for the Past Noble Grand Arch Brother John van Slyke. He was a member of Concord Grove #155 since 1986 and has been serving as Noble Grand Arch during the last term 2010 to He passed away on 25 th August and is greatly missing by his fellow Druids in California. John van Slyke was a

very active man as well within the Druid Order where he filled a lot of offices as in his private life. The June 2012 Convention Report indicates there were 1,153 Grove members and 595 Circle members. The largest increase of membership last year with 11 new members has got Hill Grove # 211 in Trenton. There is a continual article in the California Druid Magazine named Thoughts of Stone E. Henge in which this brother mentions different problems in connection with the social life in our Order critically but never offensive. There was a Reception for the 3 Leading Officers of the Californian Druid Order (Grand Grove, Grand Circle, Grand Chapter) on 12 th Aug. with 51 persons in attendance. Accounting a number of family members at best 40 Druids are remaining. Bro Stone E. Henge says: You may recall that there were 307 people in attendance when Harmony Grove #38 held the Barbecue at the Pomi Ranch. One might argue that the BBQ is a traditional gathering and that is valid. However, the Reception is rich in tradition and is 148 years old. The attendees of the Reception to honor our three leaders of the Order amounted to only 2.2% of our membership. And he continues: A famous contemporary Druid has stated: for every hour you put into your Order, you get two hours of enjoyment in return! That`s for sure. People who believe in rebirth should avoid coming on the world into California as turkey about the chances are there low level! At least each Grove or Circle offers a Turkey Dinner for Thanksgiving (in November) On various occasions I was asked for our 7 Historical Precepts (also called Merlins 7 Precepts) in English without any changes and corrections which have been made during the last 150 years. I found the following sentences in one of the 2005 editions of the California Druid Magazine: 1. Labour diligently to acquire knowledge, for it is power. 2. When in authority, decide reasonable, for thine authority may cease. 3. Bear with fortitude the ills of life, remember that no mortal sorrow is perpetual. 4. Love virtue for it bringeth peace. 5. Abhor vice for it bringeth evil upon all. 6. Obey those in authority in all just things, that virtue may be exalted. 7. Cultivate the social virtues, so shalt thu be beloved by all men. Last not least: When a Druid from abroad comes to London and he is interested in the history of Druidism he surely goes to 28 Poland Street in Soho, and he finds the pub he is looking for. Its name is KINGS ARMS and we Druids know that this is an historical place for us. On the front side there is a shield to be seen with the words IN THIS OLD KINGS ARMS TAVERN THE ANCIENT ORDER OF DRUIDS WAS REVIVED 28 TH SEPTEMBER And when you step in and would ask the barkeeper if this pub has a long tradition he might proudly answer: Oh yes, it has. We are the oldest gay-bar in London and opened it 37 years ago. What a surprise! With fraternal regards in Unity, Peace and Concord Dieter Hennecke Grand Secretary
