1 News of the Flock Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd- From the Pastor s Desk: Paulette and I just got back from the mountains, one of my favorite places on earth. I love the majesty that is expressed in a strong silence. There is for me an overwhelming sense of that which is sacred in the quiet breeze filling the valleys. In the mountains I feel the presence of God. They seem to assure me that amid all the changes around me, the majesty and strength remain solid. It was in the mountains that I got the heartbreaking news that Eugene Peterson had died. It cut me to the quick even though I had never met him, had never been in one of his lectures, or had even been able to see him at a distance. Eugene Peterson is the translator of "The Message" and the author of over 30 books. He was at his very best as a Presbyterian Pastor in a relatively small congregation in Maryland which he served as mission developer and then Pastor for 29 years. In his books I was touched by his heart. His love for ministry lifted my enthusiasm and my commitments. He made a difference for me in deep and abiding ways. Unfortunately, I never told him. The letter I intended to write never got written. I will tell him in the times to come. As I shed my personal tear on the deck of the mountain cabin, a leaf, newly turned yellow, fell from a tree and floated down by my feet. One leaf fallen in the midst of the great wonder of the hills. That leaf will become a part of the ground that makes up those hills, its presence will be in those mountains until the end of time. That leaf, Eugene Peterson, and all the leaves of our lives that have fallen from this life, make up the "Great Cloud of Witnesses" that have formed the hills and valleys of our journey. The leaves of faith that have colored our hearts with their love and strength adorn the walkways where we find ourselves. On All Saints Sunday (Nov. 4) we will remember those lives. And then we will give thanks for them on the days, weeks, and years to follow. "For all your saints, who from their labor rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name of Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia! And I offer thanks for you, the ones who adorn our journeys today and in the days to come. You are building faith for each of us and for those who will follow. Today, the mountains remain solid and majestic. 5 News of the Flock The Daily Bread Ministry: This year the Thanksgiving dinner for those in need will not be at Good Shepherd church. We are going to partner with the Golden United Methodist Church s Fit for the Future Ministry. We will have an opportunity to deliver meals, to transport people and to help assist people on site. Dinner will be served at the Wendy's parking lot on Fairburn Road. We are being asked to donate turkeys for their dinner. Fit for the Future will cook the entire dinner. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer with Fit for the Future and show up at the Wendy s parking at 9 am. When you sign in you will be assigned a task. Thank You! Stewardship: November is the month we concentrate on Thanksgiving. We talk about what God has given us. God has provided for us in abundance. Stewardship is directly tied to discipleship and our need to give back to God. It is our way of life. How generous are we with all that God has given us? God has entrusted us for the care of our church. Offerings are needed, so we can worship in God's house. We give our thanks to God for the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd through our offerings, time, and talents. - Joanne Craton (Stewardship Committee Chair) Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. 1 Peter 4:10 Evangelism Committee: The Evangelism Committee is being formed and is beginning their work on reaching out and making everyone feel welcome at Good Shepherd. One of the first projects they plan to tackle is a new pictorial directory. They plan to do this in house and not to hire an outside company, as was done in the past, to limit costs. Anyone interested in being on this committee or helping with the directory, please contact Linda Boynton at: Bossmare92@hotmail.com. An Invitation From Loving Hands Ministry: Loving Hands Ministry would like to invite the congregation to our Open House event on Nov. 3rd. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will have a cookout sponsored by Ace Hardware from 11:30 to 12:45 and then at 1:00 we will dedicate our chapel to two of our founders, Garey McManus and Jerre O'Neal. We would love for everyone to come out and see how we minister to those in crisis in our community. We are located at 6461 Church Street in downtown Douglasville. For questions, contact Leigh Ann Champion at
