1 the Chamber Volume XXXVI No. 1 Bell Tower Building Cumberland, MD January 2018 Executive Director While in reality just another point in time on the calendar, January 1 st and the New Year bring reason to assess the past and plan for the future. A new year brings optimism and a feeling of new beginnings. This year is no exception for many reasons. There are a number of projects moving to next steps or completion. The Footer Project will be complete and the River Project will begin moving forward. The new high school will be opening and new projects at Frostburg State University and Allegany College of Maryland are beginning. The Baltimore Street Revitalization and Maryland Avenue Redevelopment Projects in Cumberland are moving to critical next steps. Various private sector projects are also starting or completing in Frostburg State University is hiring a Vice President for Regional Development and Engagement and the Targeted Industry Analysis is in implementation stage. With a new director, Allegany County Tourism has renewed vision and focus with several initiatives planned for the New Year. Allegany County Government will welcome a new County Administrator. The Cluster Target Industry Study for the I-68 Regional Economic Partnership will be complete and in implementation stage. Allegany County Commissioners have committed to a Strategic Plan for Economic Development this year as well. The Maryland Department of Planning is full speed ahead developing A Better Maryland. On top of it all, 2018 is an election year with many of our representative offices being contested. Be engaged and let your voice be heard. While there is still much work to be done, it s easy to point out the negatives but a sense of change is apparent. The bandwagon is rolling. Jump on and we ll do it together. Thank you Jonathan Membership Committee Update Chamber After Hours Network and Win 2018 marks the beginning of not only a new year but the return of our popular Network and Win program. November did not have a winner so the pot grows to $ for the next Chamber After Hours. For those not familiar with the Network and Win drawing here are the rules: Only current members in good standing are eligible to win. Must be pre-registered and present to win. At each Chamber After Hours event the Chamber draws the name of ONE MEMBER COMPANY. If they are pre-registered and present they win the drawing. All employees of the winning company who are present and pre-registered split the prize money! $5.00 charge collected at door payable by cash or check. If no one wins the Chamber adds $ to the pot and continues to do so each month until a winner is drawn. If someone wins the drawing starts over at $ Any new business that joins will have their company name added to the drawing at the next available After Hours. Your odds of winning increase greatly during the first couple months of the year. So make sure your membership dues for 2018 are paid in full prior to the next Chamber After Hours event. Questions about the Network and Win; please contact the Chamber office.
