Northside Community Church Newsletter February and March Barton Drive Ann Arbor, MI Pastor: Rev. Terence McGinn

Here s what s happening at Northside: Remembering Bill Hagel

William Carl Bill Hagel passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and friends on November 5, A funeral service took place November 9, 2016 at NCC. A meal was held in the fellowship hall following interment. We miss Bill in the choir and miss his thirst for information and to impart that information. Our thoughts and prayers are with MaryEllen and Bill s daughters and their families. From Anne - I will not ever see an Arnold Palmer (half lemonade half iced tea) that I won t think of Bill! Pastor Terry s beginning of the year report: On the move... Based on decisions made last year, here are some items on our to-do list for 2017 and how we are proceeding with that list... Building Relationships that Build the Kingdom 1. Young Adults: We will soon be hiring a Ministry Intern to work with our young adults. The job description will be circulated this week. 2. Christ Church Ann Arbor: Terry will have coffee with Pastor Will for a casual check-in. Maybe we should do Easter Breakfast together between services? 3. First Baptist: Kathryn Goodson, Andy Block, Paul Clark and others are working with First Baptist on our next Concert-4-a-Cause, which will be at FBC. Things are moving forward nicely! We continue to serve the Hunger Coalition meals there monthly thanks to Holly, Steve, and others! 4. Second Baptist: Sheree and Al Clark have visited worship. Terry is consulting with First Baptist about approaching SBC together to re-start periodic get-togethers for the three congregations. 5. Northside STEAM School. Gloria Taylor and Terry are working to meet with the principal to see how Northside can be a good neighbor to the school. 6. Home-bound members. The congregation signed and sent Valentine s cards to our shut-ins last Sunday. More Welcoming and Affirming: We voted in August to become a Welcoming and Affirming congregation. Andy Block is chairing a committee that will make Recommendations on how to announce and implement that vote.

8. Capital campaign: The furnace should be replaced and parts of the roof should be repaired (no leaking yet, but we want to be proactive.) Steve McTaggart will help lead the charge on this as we fire up a capital campaign. 9. Landscaping. It may be time to do a major cut-back of the hedge next to our parking lot and some of the trees outside the front door. Look for more on this in spring. 10. Building Leadership. This year we are helping Sheree Clark take more educational steps toward ordination, which COULD be happening as soon as 2018! Looking forward to a great year, Terry Parish Nurse Notes, February 2017, Sheree Clark, R.N. Matters of the Heart February is the Heart Month we celebrate Valentine s Day February 14 th. It is also Black History Month. I wanted to share with you about the lives of two black women who made a difference for all because they followed their hearts, they answered God s calling for their lives. These two women were sent by the National Baptist Convention, USA to west Africa. In the early 1900 s, the convention sent Miss Susie A. Taylor of South Carolina and Miss E. B. Delaney of Florida. Miss E. B. Delaney, according to tradition, went into the jungle areas, cleared the grounds, drove in stakes, all of this physical and much more intellectual and emotional labor for the African mission. Miss Delaney was to her surprise followed back from one of her mission trips by a native African boy, Daniel Malekebu. Miss Delaney was so impressed with by him she encouraged him to enter the Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Malekebu became supervisor of missions of South, East, and Central Africa. The medical mission work of Dr. Malekebu resulted from the mission work of the great black missionary Miss E. B. Delaney. Miss Susie Taylor was sent by the National Baptist Convention, USA to work in Liberia, Africa. She founded the Baptist Industrial Academy, the second largest school under the National Baptist Convention, USA. She also worked manually clearing the land for the new school. She was a dedicated teacher, intellectually, emotionally, and physically involved in her school development and continuance. She too, like Miss E. B. Delaney, answered God s call and we are who we are today because of their legacies. Following our hearts and sharing our love may some days feel like the most natural choice in the world, then the call comes to love our neighbor as ourselves. These two women embodied the call to love their neighbors as themselves. At Northside Community Church, we are a light on a hill to our neighbors on the North side and all around. Let s continue to stretch those heart muscles. What will our legacy be?

In His Service and Love, Nurse Sheree Missions 2017 America For Christ February 10 April 16 As part of American Baptist Churches USA, American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) answers God s call to live out Christian faith through ministry that strengthens congregations and connects with communities beyond church walls ministry that encourages and nurtures disciple-makers who shout the Good News of Jesus Christ and impact our world with God s love. Ultimately, through living forth authentic discipleship with hearts ever-focused on the Gospel, faithful people and churches inspired and instilled with ABHMS support and ministry bring transformation and healing to congregations and communities across the United States and Puerto Rico. ABHMS ministry, planted close to 200 years ago, is as strong as ever. Hundreds of the faithful pastors and lay leaders; chaplains and pastoral counselors; refugee sponsors; directors of Neighborhood Action Program Christian centers; volunteers; Sunday school teachers; and social justice advocates partner with ABHMS daily to heal and minister to those in need emotionally, physically, financially and spiritually. These mission partners are on the front lines of faith, bringing God s love to those who need it most: families struggling with poverty, senior citizens suffering with illness and loneliness, children and youth flailing without guidance, former offenders re-entering society; military service members struggling with the realities of conflict; and immigrants and refugees striving to fit into a new culture, to name just a few. The work of ABHMS reaches from Alabama to Alaska, Pennsylvania to Puerto Rico, and so much further to the deepest parts of the human heart. Northside Community Church has a long and strong commitment to ABHMS local and national missions and has contributed faithfully to the America For Christ offering. In the past, NCC has received recognition for being one of the largest contributor for its size. Please help NCC to continue this tradition by making your contribution from February 10 through April 16.

Gloria Taylor, Missions Chair Adopt-a-Family 2016 We approached Northside STEAM school in November to inquire about adopting a family or 2 as we have in the past few years. The counselor responded that they had 2 families that could use adopting. THEN we had a counselor from Eberwhite (who had been at Northside a few years ago) inquire as to whether we would be able to help them out with a family in need. Anne checked with board members and all agreed that we should do this. So we had 3 families and $100+ left over from last years adopt a family project. As we began to plan for the shopping and providing we discovered that one of the families had 7 kids ranging in age from 8 months to 15 years. So we had 3 families which amounted to 13 kids! We shopped knowing that it would be hard to get this done for much less that $100 per kid which would be $1300. We did this on faith and we not only met our expense of $1262 but ended up with a little extra which will go into next years fund.! We wrapped at noon-timers on December 20 and then Sheree, Lloyd and Anne caravanned over to the school with 3 car loads of gifts (Eberwhite gifts were delivered by Anne earlier). We are small AND mighty! This is a BIG mission that we have done for a few Northside (and this year Eberwhite) families in need. A HUGE thanks to those who gave, the wrappers, and the delivery elves. Stay tuned for next Christmas where we will change up HOW we do this to make it a little easier on the elves! Annual Business Meeting Minutes Northside Community Church Annual Business Meeting January 29, 2017 Present: Terrence McGinn, Anne Daws-Lazar, Phil Daws-Lazar, Sue Wurster, Sophie Farah, Holly Perry, Sheree Clark, Al Clark, Phil Sondeen, Steve McTaggart, Lloyd Kitchens, Elizabeth Kitchens, Dennis Carter, Sr., Esther Yost, Deborah Bailey, Jane Wild, Andy Block, Steve Guerriero, Adam Guerriero, Kathryn Stafford, Mary Ellen Hagel, Gloria Taylor, Lisa Hagel (guest) The Annual Northside Community Church business meeting took place after the morning service and potluck luncheon. The meeting was called to order at 11:15 by chair, Anne Daws-Lazar.

The 2016 Annual Report was distributed to the congregation. Holly Perry made a motion to accept the 2016 Annual Report as presented and Sheree Clark and Phil Daws-Lazar seconded the motion. The congregation approved the 2016 Annual Report. Pastor Terrence McGinn highlighted 2017 as a year loss due to the passing away of several members. Rev. McGinn also commented that NCC financial status is stabilizing and that the financial balance show a $3,000 surplus. Rev. McGinn stated that one of the reasons for the positive balance is because the members of the congregation fund many of the special events. Rev. McGinn stated that overall he is optimistic about the future of NCC. The Phil Sondeen Basin and Towel Award I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. -John 13:15 This award will recognize annually an individual or individuals who typify the humble service that Jesus enacted when he washed the feet of his disciples and said to them You should wash one another s feet. The award is particularly intended to honor those individuals who perform their deeds of service without fanfare or acclaim. Recipients will be chosen by the pastor in consultation with the Advisory Board Chair (input is welcome from those in the congregation). Rev. McGinn announced Lloyd and Elizabeth Kitchens as the recipient of the first annual Towel and Basin Award named in honor of Phil Sondeen. The inscription on the award plaque read: Lloyd and Elizabeth Kitchen In recognition of decades of humble service to the Northside Community Church, expressed through their roles as officers and members of the Advisory Board and its committees, as well as leadership in the activities of the church s men, women, education program, worship, and choir. The Kitchens have consistently stepped forward when assistance of any sort was needed, from behind the scenes work for a single event, to ongoing involvement in advancing the larger causes of the congregation. Further, the Kitchens have been role models of faith and of the non-judgmental acceptance, support, and caring for others to which this congregation aspires. Rev. Terence McGinn, pastor and Anne Daws-Lazar, Chair, Advisory Board, signed the plaque. ***Lloyd and Elizabeth wanted to pass on that they are appreciative and grateful to be

the first recipients of this award After the presentation of the award, Anne Daws-Lazar asked the congregation for recommendations for the next year recipient and Sheree Clark thanked Rev. McGinn for his insight to create this award. Andy Block made a motion to renew preaching licenses to Dennis J. Carter, Sr. and Sheree Clark. Sue Wurster seconded the motion. The congregation approved. Anne Daws-Lazar commented that at the 2016 Annual Report Business meeting, Kathryn Stafford suggested that NCC move formally to become a welcoming and affirming congregation and that progress has been made in this direction. The congregation expressed gratitude to Anne Daws-Lazar for serving as chair of the advisory board for several years. The meeting was adjourned at 11:37. Gloria Taylor, Clerk

Have you brought a donation for the food pantry recently? Bring in canned goods or non-perishables and put in the fellowship hall or in the narthex. Thank you! Also, we now have food and bags for the occasions when someone comes to the door at church looking for food or donations. These items are in the kitchen just to the right of the door as you walk in. We don't let people into the church if there is only one person here (for security reasons) but will fill a recyclable bag with non-perishables and a bottle of water or two that are down there. **If you have an article or information to add to a future newsletter please to Anne, or leave information in the office (church northsidecommunitya2@gmail.com) Thanks to those who provided material for this newsletter!!
