1 2013 ANNUAL REPORT CHRISTIAN EVANGELISTIC ASSOCIATION ST Pl S Auburn, WA (p) (f)
2 Board of s and Staff Dr. George Johnson Executive Auburn, WA Bruce Sanders Board Chairman Olympia, WA Marty Fenton Lake Stevens, WA Dottie Johnson Administrative Assistant Auburn, WA Neal Zimmerman Treasurer Edmonds, WA James Floyd Tacoma, WA Jim & Leslie Penhollow s of Planter Care Vancouver, WA Derek Dickinson Fairbanks, AK Sendy Jimenez Seattle, WA In the beginning In 1961, as Seattle prepared to host the World s Fair the following year and the iconic Space Needle was rising, 27 visionary leaders met in West Seattle with an even bigger dream of reaching the burgeoning Puget Sound area with the Gospel through the planting of churches patterned after the New Testament. From its inception, the CEA has been a cooperative association of churches and individuals partnering together to advance the Kingdom of God through the planting of new churches. In 1965 the CEA incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit. In its first 40 years, CEA established about two dozen congregations. However, despite a great vision and years of sacrificial efforts, the association realized the population was multiplying as new churches were being added. In 2004, with new leadership, a fresh vision and a new strategy for supporting and multiplying churches, clearly a new day had dawned for the CEA. In the next decade, 25 new churches would be started, bringing the total number of churches begun by the CEA to 50. Our Vision to reach the entire Northwest with the Gospel through planting 100 new multiplying churches Our Values Prayer is our first priority. We believe our movement must advance on its knees. Lost people matter to God, and they matter to us! Reproducing disciples and multiplying churches are normal and expected. The power of we - partnering, sharing and coordinating accomplishes more. Church planting leaders and their families are our most prized resource. We will lead at the edge with other adventurers and pioneers for the Kingdom.
3 From the Executive..... The big story of 2013 is the start of 3 new projects. Our newest plant in Seattle s booming South Lake Union community marks our 50 th church start in CEA s 50-year history! We re praising God! The backstory in 2013 was an extensive strategic planning process led by Marcus Bigelow of Kardia leading to several key initiatives: 1. Sustain and strengthen existing plants This initiative prompted the hiring of Jim and Leslie Penhollow as s of Planter Care. Jim retired earlier this year from his long and distinguished career as the of Church Planting with East 91 st St. Christian Church (Indianapolis, IN). In their part-time role with the CEA, Jim and Leslie are focused on supporting and encouraging our growing network of church planting families. This addition reflects our commitment to take the best possible care of our planting leaders and their families. In turn, we anticipate this will lead to increased sustainability and strength in our church plants beyond their 3 rd year. 2. Recruit more quality planting leaders This initiative resulted in a partnership with Gateway Leaders in Austin, TX to create a one-year church planting apprenticeship. We have 5 leaders currently enrolled in Cultivate apprenticeships. In addition, we expanded our recruiting presence at several Christian colleges and the International Conference on Missions. 3. Increase planting capacity through fundraising This initiative is critical to our ability to start new projects in the future. In 2013 our expenses exceeded income by nearly $100K and we are on a similar course for Because project grants and support represent 84% of our expenses, it s obvious that if we intend to sustain our pace of starting multiple new churches every year we need to substantially increase our donor base. Our strategy to hire a fundraiser was unsuccessful and this remains job #1 in Please pray for me personally as I shift other responsibilities to focus on the work of fundraising. The CEA is in pursuit of an inspired dream to bring the entire Northwest to know Jesus Christ as Lord. All our work of recruiting planting teams, helping young churches grow and funding future projects is focused on that grand purpose. We need your help! Dr. George Johnson Executive 2013 BY THE NUMBERS 3 New projects: Seattle, Portland &Emmett, ID 50 Total church starts since CEA s inception 36 Ave # of new believers baptized per church 2 Capital campaigns assisting church plants with new facilities 94 % of church starts since 2004 still active 5 Cultivate church planting apprenticeships-begun 26 Assessments since 2004, serving 89 couples and 12 planting organizations 12 Planting ministries affiliated with the national NewChurch Network founded by CEA & Nexus 34 Churches gave in support of CEA projects 92 Individuals gave in support of CEA projects 5 States where CEA has planted (+ BC, Canada!) 0 The remaining number of lost people we re praying will be living in the NW when Jesus returns

II Corinthians 8:5 As an evangelistic association we depend entirely on the same spirit of partnership in spreading the Gospel that the Macedonian believers shared with the Apostle Paul. We gratefully acknowledge these churches and individuals who have given generously to help plant new churches across the Northwest.
