The Farmington Friend Margaret Webb, Pastor VOLUME 69 NUMBER 6 FARMINGTON, NY June 2014 Spring Gathering, Gospel Order and a Dose of Harmony For those of us who attended Farmington - Scipio s Spring Gathering this May we had the pleasure of hearing from Lloyd Lee Wilson and his wife, Susan. They belong to a Quaker Monthly Meeting in North Carolina Yearly Meeting (Conservative). He has written a couple of books and Pendle Hill pamphlets which, of course, we had the opportunity to purchase at the Gathering. He appears to be one of the leading authorities on Gospel Order based on teachings from George Fox who coined the phrase. First let me define gospel order according to Lloyd Lee. In his book, Quaker Vision of Gospel Order, he states: Gospel order is the order established by God that exists in every part of creation, transcending the chaos that seems so often prevalent. It is the right relationship of every part of creation, however small, to every other part and to the Creator. He suggests that what God created above the chaos was good and remains good to this day. According to Lloyd Lee that includes everything. Everything is good and works together in harmony there is nothing bad. There were a couple of conversations which really caught my attention over the weekend. The first was something Lloyd Lee said regarding being in right relationship and is a similar question I have pondered for such a very long time. How can, for instance, Israelis and Palestinians be expected to be in right relationship, to live harmoniously with one another, when we cannot live amicably with family members, other Friends or in our places of work. Personally, I give a great deal of thought to what stops so many of us from accepting differences in each other or what allows us to be judgmental and condemning. For me it is a daily struggle but I am conscious of my failings and question and consider how I can change for the better in this way. I found something in the NYYM Faith and Practice queries section which I think gives us something to consider regarding gospel order. Are we concerned for the spiritual growth of one another? Are love and unity fostered among us? If differences arise, do we endeavor to reconcile them in a spirit of love and truth? Lloyd Lee says: As one comes more closely into harmony with the gospel order, one s life is filled with the peace that passes understanding and one s relationships reflect this peace and harmony. The second notion which touched me deeply was a story shared by a visitor from 15 th Street Meeting in NYC. She spoke of individuals in her Meeting who she had trouble with. According to her it was a great deal of trouble. She explained to us that she learned to find admirable qualities in these Friends and that she concentrated on these abilities rather than the less desirable traits which were so obvious to her. She learned to be compassionate. And then another annoying person would pop up and she would start the process all over again. So, what I would like to leave you all with is the very last words she had on this subject. She told us that she had come to the realization that wherever two or more were gathered together in her heart there was love. Is there love in our hearts? Kathy Dudarchik

Margaret s Musings Happy Birthday! The peonies are blooming at the parsonage. I realize that peonies may not be for everyone--they are large, they have a strong smell, the ones we have are a very bright pink, they attract ants and probably have other faults that someone more knowledgeable about plants would know. However, I love them, despite (or perhaps because) of their shortcomings. They have so much fervent exuberance. They bloom with such passion. They are over-the-top with flowers so large that sometimes they can t even hold themselves upright. I feel like they are declaring to the world there is no such thing as too much of a good thing! They seem so bold and so uncaring that they might not be the most sophisticated of flowers. Personally, I would like my faith life to be like the peonies. I would like to love God with fervent exuberance. I would like my love for God to be big, bold and unapologetic. I want my celebration and praise of God to be passionate and joyful. I want to tell others how much God loves them, just as they are, and that they are perfectly, fearfully, wondrously made! I want to teach people the truth: that God is Love and that Love wins. I want to teach that lesson with unceasing energy, with joy and thanksgiving. Just as the peonies seem so uncaring that they are not as sophisticated as other blooms, I don t particularly care that this message of Love might not be a theologically sophisticated message. I want it to be simple and glorious. The peony analogy has its limits. Peonies bloom extravagantly but only for a short while. I believe that our faith lives can be filled with joy and exuberance throughout our lives. I think that faith, like most other things, takes care and nurturing. If we put time into our relationship with God and nurture that relationship then I do believe that it can bloom with joy throughout the many seasons of our lives. Yet, perhaps the peony analogy is not so limited after all. Although peonies only bloom for a short time they are perennials. They have a season of growth and preparation, followed by a season of exuberant blooming, followed by a season quiet growth, followed by a season of underground preparation. Then they bloom again. And again. And again. Perhaps this is a good analogy for a life of faith. Scripture teaches us that everything has a season and I know for myself that our faith lives can have seasons of dryness as well as seasons of growth. Each day I walk past the peonies blooming in our yard and I am reminded of God s extravagant Love and the value of my own passionate faith. They also remind me of the change in seasons, of the beauty of the times that are less full of color. I pray that when the peonies have finished blooming this year that God will present me with other, just as obvious, examples of Grace. 4 Committee Minutes & Notes Farmington Friends Called Monthly Meeting Minutes May 22, 2014 Farmington Friends met for a Called Monthly Meeting at 6:00 pm on Thursday May 22, 2014 with 27 present. Clerk, Marion Cole, opened the meeting by reading from NYYM Faith and Practice. Friends believe that God's presence and guidance are available to all seekers. We should listen attentively to, and reflect on, the messages and views of all members. In the transaction of business the same reverent waiting upon the Lord should prevail as in meetings for worship. Friends should give patient and sympathetic consideration to all proposals and expression of opinion. We reach decisions through a sense of the meeting rather than by vote. This was followed by a time of silence and prayer. Friends met for discernment on the following minute recommended by Ministry and Counsel: There is a diversity of perspectives on Ministry and Council around silent worship, which is representative of the meeting at large. We recommend that we keep the thirty minute silent worship before programmed meeting and to reserve the 5th Sunday of a given month for an un-programmed meeting. Also, to allow for the possibility that some of the worship sessions can be un-programmed during the absence of the Pastor. The Monthly Meeting did not reach Unity on this minute. The Clerk then floated the following minute: 4 Attendees: Helen Kirker, Natalie Santy, Chris Santy, Amelia, Santy, Lucas Santy, Susan Sharp,, Margaret Hartsough, Eric Masters, Norm Cole, Margaret Webb, Ed Golem, Carol Nicholson, Rosemarie Brekner, Barbara Popenhusen, Jean Parker, Melissa Moore, Willie Bontrager Linda Doyen, Jennifer Perry, Darleen Farley, Cynthia Marvin, Annaliese Parker, Gardie Soule, Polly Nicholson, Marion Cole, Dianne Aldrich and Kathy Dudarchik. Marion Cole, Clerk Kathy Dudarchik, Recording Clerk Farmington Friends Monthly Meeting Minutes May 25, 2014 Farmington Friends met for Monthly Meeting at the rise of Meeting for Worship on Sunday May 25, 2014 with 13 present. Clerk, Marion Cole, opened the meeting by reading Ecclesiastes 3:11-12; 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. She also shared a short piece about appreciating beauty in our lives written by Luci Swindoll. This was followed by a time of prayer. Corrections: Darlene Farley reminded Friends again that it is customary in Quaker practice to omit the names of people making requests about procedure, suggestions etc. from public meeting minutes therefore keeping such requests, suggestions etc. more objective. It was also noted that Quaker minutes should not include the term Respectfully Submitted. There is a diversity of perspectives on Ministry and Council around silent worship, which is representative of the meeting at large. We recommend that we keep the thirty minute silent worship before programmed meeting. Health of the Meeting: Richard Baker is recovering nicely and may not require surgery after all. Marion Milne has been experiencing some weak and tired periods. This minute was approved by the meeting. Please hold these Friends in the light and in your prayers.

Pastor s Report for Monthly Meeting May 2014 Pastoral Care: This month has included many of my regularly scheduled pastoral care commitments and also a number of hospital visits and some other pastoral care opportunities. I have continued to regularly visit with the older members of the Meeting and those who are unable to come to Meeting regularly and I also made a number of hospital visits. I have also had the opportunity to have dinner with several families at our Meeting and I have connected over lunch several times with various other members. I have also connected by phone with members who are not able to come to church regularly and I have connected by phone with folks who needed some crisis care pastoral care support. I also had the opportunity to meet several times with the Johnson family prior to Ronald Johnson s memorial service. I primarily worked with the family to plan the funeral but I also provided some pastoral care. I continue to connect with people in person on Sundays, at our monthly potluck, and during one-on-one visits. I also connect pastorally with people via phone, , texting and recently Facebook. I have continued to consistently meet my weekly goal of 2-3 in person visits and 2-3 pastoral phone calls (texts, s, etc.). Worship Preparation and Leadership: This month I have continued working my way through the stories of the apostles (the early spread of Christianity) leading up to Pentecost. I have tried to be sensitive to other events in my worship planning (such as Mother s Day). My sermons have been shorter over the last few weeks, in part because I preached long, during the weeks just prior to Easter. I am trying to find a good rhythm in working on my children s message and I am working to use books occasionally but primarily have more inter-active children s messages. As I mentioned previously I worked with the Johnson family to put together a memorial service for Ronald Johnson. This was my second funeral but the first funeral I have done for someone that I did not personally know. There were some major challenges involved in this particular funeral, but I feel that I figured out what I needed and I will be even better prepared for future memorial service. I have a funeral file, of resources in my office that I have been collecting and this will be very helpful for next time I am in this situation. 5 Committee, Administrative and Other Commitments: I have continued to attend committee meetings this month. I also have attended RE and continued to be active in helping to build our website. We are beginning to put up pictures on the website, although we are still waiting to get a few release forms from some parents. I have continued my work with the youth group. I also recently cleaned out and reorganized my church office and I think this is going to make it much easier for me to keep my files organized. I plan to start using my church office more regular, but I plan to keep the times that I am in the office somewhat irregular and I plan to have the church locked unless I am expecting a specific visitor. I will try to be mindful of M&C s concerns about my safety. I have continued to check the church s mail, answer phone messages and answer s. This month I am leading the Bible study at Spring Gathering for Farmington/Scipio Region. As a personal side note some of you may have heard but I have been experiencing some minor health issues around my pregnancy. It is nothing to worry about but my midwife has advised me to try and take everything at a somewhat slower pace and not over-do it. If I don t take things easy between now and my due date then there may be a possibility of needing to go on best-rest and I would like to avoid that at all cost. In an effort to follow my midwife s advice I am really going to try and do my best to keep my working hours to 40/week. I will try over the summer to aim for 2 pastoral visits a week instead of 3-4 which has been more typical for me, and I may take on fewer leadership roles within the work of committees. I may also try and limit myself to working just one or two evenings a week. I want to assure you all that I am still completely capable of seeing to the needs of the meeting and I am still available to all of you whenever you need anything from me. I love this meeting and will continue to serve it with all of my heart and ability. 6 Farmington Friends Ministry and Counsel May 20, 2014 Farmington Friends Ministry and Council met May 20, 2014 at 6:30pm at Willie Bontrager's home. Present: Willie-Clerk, Sue Sharp, Pat Ford, Linda Doyen, Ann Ledgerwood, Ed Golem, Carol Nicholson, Annaliese Parker. Linda brought opening thoughts "He Knows What is Best". Health of the Meeting: Nance Simkin is making progress in recovering from a recent illness but we continue to hold her in prayer. Hannah Sharp is also feeling better after a recent infection. During the meeting Annaliese left to take Jonathan to the ER, we pray he will be cared for and on the mend quickly. There were no additions to the April minutes. Old Business: The committee carefully reviewed the minute written by Ministry and Council on silent worship that was taken to the April Monthly Meeting and approved letting it stand as written and resubmitting it to the Called Monthly Meeting that will be considering un-programmed worship models. Committee members will attend the Called Monthly Meeting May 22, 2014 in support of the minute. New Business: Ministry and Council has set Saturday July 12, 2014, 9-1, to work on preparing a job description for the committee as recommended at the Pastors and Elders Retreat held at Powell House in March. We will meet at the meetinghouse starting with a light breakfast and bring a bag lunch. Margaret has been asked by the Palmyra Macedon Farmington Clergy Council to coordinate and lead a baccalaureate ceremony for the Pal-Mac High School held in mid-june, a very complex task to handle as a new-comer to the community. The committee feels that although she would be a wonderful speaker for an event of this kind assuming responsibility for the entire service would not be possible. A letter has been written expressing this position but supporting Margaret willingness to participate in a portion of this service and hope that the Clergy Council can find a way to collaboratively organize this service. We discussed the pastor's report ed to members prior to the meeting. Committee members will follow-up on some ideas. We look forward to recognizing this year's graduates during upcoming worship times. 6 The June 17, 2014 Ministry and Council Meeting starting at 6:30pm will be at the home of Sue Sharp-Pat Ford will bring openings thoughts. Willie Bontrager, Clerk The request to use the Meetinghouse on Saturday July 12, 2014, 9-1 was approved. The Meeting supports Ministry and Counsel s decision regarding the Baccalaureate Ceremony at Pal-Mac High School. Peace and Social Concerns Meeting May 15, 2014! Peace and Social Concerns met at the home of Gard and Sally Soule on Thursday, May 15, Polly Nicholson, Annie Bontrager, Pam Hawkins, Rita Cronise, Margaret, Chris and Teddy Webb, along with Gard and Sally Soule attended. After our usual and always satisfying carry in meal, we settled into the living room for our meeting. Pam and Rita were our honored guests and have volunteered to help us with our alternative to violence theme by presenting a workshop for the church community. Pam first spontaneously involved us in a peace practice awareness exercise. We enjoyed this reflective session and we were grateful for the sharing. Then the main thrust of the meeting was the final planning of our intergenerational workshop for the fall of next school year. We wish to have Monthly Meeting approve Sunday, October 3, 2014 for our whole day program of peace practice for individuals and for family relationships. Rita and Pam will head up this fall workshop. We plan to invite a few area churches and the Rochester Meeting our peace program. Planning for this program will be on going involving Margaret, Sally, Pam and Rita. Annie Bontrager will contact Nadine Hoover to see if she can help us put together an instructional program regarding Conscious Objector practices and procedures. We hope to provide this program for the community as part of our peace practice initiatives. On the lighter social side, we talked about picnic possibilities for our church. Margaret suggested an outdoor Sunday Meeting followed by a picnic on the church grounds. Other suggestions were made for other picnic sites.

In April we would like to promote awareness to the a peace tax and the breakdown of how our taxes are spent by our government. We discussed the Appreciation Dinners as well as the Un coffee hour. The idea of labeling ingredients in the food offered at the food table during the un coffee was suggested. Pat Ford was in compliance with this idea. Our next official meeting will take place September 18, 2014 at the Soules, with the Carry in dinner starting at 6:00 PM. Submitted by Sally Soule The request to use the Meetinghouse early in October 2014 was approved. However clarification needs to made on this date as the 3 rd of October is on a Friday. Missions Committee: No Report. See Page 8 for a note from Missions Committee about their projects in Kenya. House and Grounds: The siding on the south side of the Meetinghouse has been repaired. There will be an inspection by the Fire Marshall on June 2 nd. There seems to be no issue with lead paint in the parsonage. 7 World Are Our F/friends? Dianne will help practice if music can be found to play. Anne has put together a tentative Youth Sunday program that sounds acceptable and doable. Jeremy and Taylor will be asked to speak as they are seniors this year. We will recognize High School and College graduates. Suggestions for Youth Sunday were to include a report from Cadi Parker on her trip to Kenya, report on activities for the year and have our children bring their special talents of music. It was mentioned that we need to work with the Sunday morning worship group to find an alternative temporary worship space during our practice for Youth Sunday. Gail mentioned the weekend summer program that her grandson Max took part in last year. Visiting with and learning about the Akwesasne peoples of NY and Canada. She would like to see our children involved in other such programs. Margaret is looking into making sure all of our third graders have bibles given by our Meeting. Mention was made about some programs that are coming up for fourth & fifth and fifth through seventh graders at Powell House. Our next meeting will be June 4 th at 6:15 to set final plans for Youth Sunday, Sundae Sunday and discuss a trip during the summer to a goat farm. Respectfully submitted, Dianne Aldrich Religious Education May 7, 2014 We were led in prayer by Margaret. There were 7 in attendance. Some people have pictures from our bowling outing to post on the Meeting s web site but there are still a few release forms needed for some of the children to be able to post these pictures. We felt it was a fun time for all involved. Anne is going to check with Jenni about purchasing carnations to hand out to Mothers for Mother s Day on May 11. Any children present on that day will be asked to hand them out. Future Sunday School dates are May 18, June 1 and June 8. May 18 Sue ford will bring a DVD of Toy Story for children to hear You ve Got a Friend. This is a possible Theme song for Youth Sunday as our program for the year has been Where in the Library Committee: No report Music Committee: If anyone is interested in sharing their gift of music this summer you can contact Jean Parker. Special Music begins Sunday June 15 th. Old Business: The Friend bulk mailing question: Anne Gilson is actively working on the questions around the alternatives to the bulk mailing of the Friend. Website Update: Pictures are beginning to go up on the website as the committee is continually making additions. New Business: Darleen Farley reported on Spring Sessions of NYYM held at Rochester Colgate Crozer Divinity School. The response of the Priorities Working

Group which was presented at Spring Sessions and published in the last issue of The Friend closely reflects the results of Farmington Friend s opportunity to meet with this group. Other Business: There is a need for some new furniture for the Meetinghouse office, particularly a couch and perhaps a chair. If anyone has any gently used furniture they would like to donate or could give a monetary donation towards the purchase of new furniture please let Margaret Webb know. A Baby Shower is being scheduled for Saturday August 2 nd at the Meetinghouse for the Webbs. Correspondence: A thank you was received from Bronwyn Mohlke for the generosity of our Meeting in opening up their homes for Friends from NYYM during the Spring Sessions weekend. We have received one copy of Friend s Journal and some smaller pamphlets which the clerk will display in the vestibule. The next Monthly Meeting will be June 22 at the rise of Meeting for Worship. Attendees: Helen Kirker, Bea Kimball, Norm Cole, Ann Ledgerwood, Kristina Braell, Carol Nicholson, Anne Gilson, Linda Doyen, Darleen Farley, Cynthia Marvin, Polly Nicholson, Marion Cole, and Kathy Dudarchik. Marion Cole, Clerk Kathy Dudarchik, Recording Clerk Missions Committee Funding Note Thank you for all who partcipated in this years $0.50-a-Dip dinner. So far more than $350 has been collected for FUM's summer mission project "Education for Esther". This project has a focus of helping to keep girls in school longer in the Friends schools in Turkana, Kenya. Missions Committe decided to use some of our end of year funds to support two students at Kakamega 8 Orphanage, also in Kenya. This orpahanage was started by USFW women in Kenya, to care for and educate children orphaned in part by violence and AIDS. Sukie Rice came to speak for last year's $0.50-a-Dip dinner, and in the letter below she shares about the children she has chosen for Farmington Friends to sponsor. Both children are in the home based program. Sukie will be making a trip to the orphan center this summer, and will be had- delivering letters to all the children there, as they love receiving mail from their sponsors! There will be an envelope in the library until June 29th to collect letters to forward to Sukie for Brenda and Kevin. Please keep Brenda and Kevin in your prayers! After much discernment, I have decided to give you Kevin Mutonyi and Brenda Masindi as the two children you will sponsor. Let me begin by telling you about Kevin. I received the following information from Pastor Ida at the Care Centre. Kevin Mutonyi is a traumatized boy aged 13 in class 4. He loves Christian Religious studies because he finds consolation when he reads the Bible. Kevin witnessed his father die after being brutally slashed by their neighbor. He and the other family members narrowly escaped. This changed everything in the home, and their life, including his missing three years from school. Kevin says he would like to be a policeman so that he can arrest any criminals like the one who killed his father. I don t know if this killing took place at the time of the 2008 political violence, or if it was a murder from a dispute. I will find out more at a later time. But, dear Farmington Friends, I feel this boy needs a LOT of prayers. There is no place I know of where more prayers will be offered for this boy than your Meeting. Thus, I have assigned Kevin to you and in your Christian Care. Brenda Masinde is 11 years old and in class 5. She loves netball as a game that they play at her school (volley ball). Kiswahili is her favorite subject. She hopes to become doctor in future. Both of Brenda s parents died of HIV Aids, and she lives with siblings under the care of her maternal grandparents. Normally it is the paternal uncles who take care of their brother s children when he dies. But for was the children were rejected by their paternal uncles (for reasons that I do not know but will find out more about when I am there in August). The maternal grandparents give the children love, but they are without any means of income. Brenda is a bright girl, but sometimes misses school because she has no uniform and any thing to eat! Church people give them food as they can, but the family is desperately poor which is why Brenda was taken into the Project as a new Home-based child. The blanket and mattress she received and all the food they get through the Project is shared by others in the family and so it is a great blessing for them all. I know you will hold Brenda in your prayers as well, but it is Kevin I am most worried about. Submitted by Natalie Santy
