2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Page 2 I am delighted to be writing this first message as the President of GLOS. The new board will meet on the third Tuesdays of odd numbered months and GLOS meetings remain the third Saturdays of even numbered months, with May s on the second Saturday. A new committee called the Membership Feedback Committee, will seek ways to create support between our membership and our member vendors, and get feedback from our general membership annually. This is an opportunity to help shape our future, so please participate and get involved. GLOS membership is growing, with new members interested in being part of our leadership, so look for fresh and exciting ideas throughout the coming year. Every event or project we undertake could be enhanced by a fresh perspective. We have brilliant expertise in our club with an impressive cadre of accredited and provisional AOS judges at our service, AND one of the nicest Annual Orchid shows in the Midwest. This is our time to shine! I want to remind everyone of our Annual Picnic on July 15th, at Wonch Park. If you haven t met our board, please introduce yourself. With summer well under way, the start of our show planning season will be here in no time. We hope to give you, the membership, an opportunity to get involved in something you love to do! Pete Porciello MEMBERSHIP YEAR DRAWS TO A CLOSE Since the Society s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30 of each year, members for the year who have not yet renewed their membership for are now in arrears. 4 GLOS GENERAL MEETING MINUTES May 12, 2007 Page 4 The regular minutes were unavailable for this issue of the Calypso, so Emily and Dot collaborated to compile this summary. The meeting was called to order at 7:20 pm. In addition to this being the Annual Business Meeting, it was also a celebration of the 30 th anniversary of the founding of GLOS. To help with these festivities, Doris Asher brought, for members enjoyment, a beautifully decorated, and delicious, cake (see photo on p. 3). Lynn O Shaughnessy, Rob Halgren and Christa Forrester brought orchid plants to give to anyone who wanted one (or more). Also, Doris handed out a complimentary pen and pencil to every attendee. As part of the business meeting, The members voted in the proposed slate of officers: Pete Porciello, President; Jerrie Nichols, Vice President, Emily Tseng, Secretary, and Dot will retain her position as Newsletter Editor. It was noted that since Jerrie was elected VP, her position as Director would need to be filled by the Board at their next meeting. Pete Porciello thanked the outgoing Board members, Don Garling, Donna Brower and Christa Forrester by giving them gift certificates to Van Atta s. New members were introduced and given tickets to the Raffle. A reminder was made that it was time to renew membership in GLOS. An overview was given of the Great Lakes Judging Center s Training Seminar on the Vandaceous Alliance. More information was available in the Calypso and on the GLOS website. Marilyn Lee offered to collect plants and create a GLOS display for the Traverse City Show that would be held on May Rob Halgren talked about the orchids on the plnat table. Bill Cadman introduced the evening s speaker, Peter Croezen of Canada. Peter s presentation was about the Phragmipedium kovachii story. This was an interesting saga full of international politics, intrigues and characters. Peter spent some time answering questions about growing this Phrag, and about conservation issues. Doris Asher, Donna Brower and Bill Cadman provided refreshments for the break. After the break, Lynn O Shaughnessy settled up the silent auction, and Doris Asher handled the raffle. The meeting adjourned shortly afterward. Thanks to Doris Asher, Donna Brower and Bill Cadman for the great refreshments they brought to our May meeting. At our picnic, Pete will ask for refreshment volunteers for the September meeting. We think Julie and Andrea Bishop may have already volunteered. Our apologies to anyone else who offered their culinary skills who we have since forgotten.

5 ORCHIDS IN CYBERSPACE These three sites were brought to my attention in a posting on the Orchid Guide Digest ( findex.htm), by Peter O Byrne from Singapore. The first: This website belongs to the National Herbarium Nederland. It is an authoratative resource for anyone interested in orchids from SE Asia. The second: Peter says that if anyone has purchased unidentified orchids from Vietnam, this website may be useful. He states that many supposed Vietnamese orchids are actually collected in Laos; and as there is a rather large overlap of orchids among these two countries and their neighbors, it is possible to identify many of these orchids using this site. The third: This is an encyclopedia: Malesian Orchid Genera Illustrated. From their Introduction: Malesia is the confusing name that biologists apply to the region consisting of the territories of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, East Timor and Papua New Guinea. In this largely insular part of our globe one plant family dominates all the others in species diversity: the Orchidaceae. Approximately 6000 orchid species in more than 200 genera are found here. On the present website we want to visualize this overwhelming diversity by displaying a sample of species from all genera known from Malesia, together with some basic information about these genera. This site is in progress an will be added as time goes on. Speaking of encyclopedias, don t forget Jay Pfal s site: This is probably the most comprehensive orchid encyclopedia on the internet. And it is continually being updated as Jay receives new information. And finally, check out our own website: Happy surfing! Dot AOS CORNER Two new organizations were welcomed and approved for AOS affiliation at the AOS s spring meeting in Arlington, Texas when the Greater North Texas Orchid Society and the Fort Worth Orchid Societies hosted AOS, SWROGA, the IPA, and The Slipper Orchid Society. 1. The New Mexico Orchid Guild meets in Albuquerque. Visit their web page to find out more about them: Page 5 2. Watch this group, also, if you haven t already heard about them: The Native Orchid Conference, Inc. was founded in 2002 and to date they have 470 members. There are about 250,000 species of plants, about 10% of all plants are orchids. P Most and least orchid seeds in a pod: Crytopodium punctatum holds the record for most with about 71/2 million seeds per pod. Barbosella Australia holds the record for least at about 25,000 seeds per pod. P.10 Welcome to our new AOS staff: Activity is the key word for what s current at the AOS Visitor s Center and Botanical Garden, as the new staff (Susan Cupp, Jim Jordan, Ron McHatton, and Brandy Upright) gets oriented. Let s all give them some breathing space but make them feel welcome when we have the need to make contact. Nice looking group, they are, too! They, along with Orchids editor Jim Watson were on hand at the meeting and show in Arlington. Melba and Jim Butler Houston Orchid Society s AOS Representatives

6 STUDY GROUP NEWS Page 6 The Study Group met at Bill Cadman s home on June 3rd. We discussed how we will be summering our orchids outside. Pete discussed his set-up, Dot showed photos of hers, and then we went into Bill s back yard to see how he had his yard organized for moving his plants to their summer home. Notice the plants hanging on a rack placed against his garage. Then we decided to go to Fenner Nature Center where the GLOS Conservation Committee had planted native Cypripediums, some of which had recently been rescued from a road development project in the Upper Peninsula. We decided our next meeting will be at Pete Ostlund s, and the topic for discussion will be how to prepare one s orchids for bringing back inside after their summer vacation outdoors. Present at this session were Bill Cadman, Jerrie Nichols, Pete Porciello, Jim Heilig, Pete Ostlund, and Dot Potter Barnett. 7 Page 7 GLOS EXHIBIT IN TRAVERSE CITY 5/26-27/07 Submitted by Marilyn Lee Northwestern Michigan Orchid Society hosted a small but lovely orchid show over Memorial Day weekend. Marilyn Lee transported, set up and took down a 25 sq foot exhibit for GLOS which received a Blue Ribbon. Jan Szyren, Rob Halgren and Marilyn contributed plants which received 9 Blue Ribbons and 2 Trophies. Jan s Encylia alta was the focal point, it was stunning and it received a Blue Ribbon and Trophy for the best in the Cattleya Alliance. Rob Halgren received a Blue Ribbon and a Trophy for his specimen size Maxillaria tenuifolia. Rob s other Blue Ribbon winners were Tolumnia Kitty Crocker Rose Giant, Ascocentrum miniatum, Phalaenopsis I-Hsin Sunflower Yellow, and Paphiopedilum Shah Alan x Callosum. Marilyn s Blue Ribbon winners were Phalaenopsis Nobby s Amy, Oncidium viperinum, and Paphiopedilum Lynleigh Koopowitz. Thank you Rob and Jan for sharing your plants which made the exhibit a lovely public display. Photos courtesy of Marilyn Lee Visiting localities and events around an orchid show is always enjoyable. While in the Traverse City area I took the opportunity to visit an area on Leelanau Peninsula that used to have large numbers of Cypripedium calceolus. I am sorry to say that in this particular area there were present only a third of the C. calceolus seen a few years ago. Then I went to Leland to visit the Leelanau Conservancy s Annual Wildflower Plant Rescue Sale. This wildflower rescue Committee apparently has good relationships with peninsula developers and remove plants from sites that are slated for development. The plants are inspected by the Department of Agriculture. The proceeds of the sales go to maintain the park in Leland and holding area for rescued plants of all types. The volunteers in Leland told me that the Boardwalk in Northport was closed because of the serious decline of the Showy Lady Slipper there. They believe that either deer or poachers contributed to the decline. -- Marilyn Lee OBSERVATIONS ON EFFECTS OF INVASIVE SPECIES ON TERRESTRIAL ORCHIDS What Can GLOS Members Do? Marilyn J. Lee In April John and Carol Stuht and I visited MI Audubon Otis Sanctuary in Barry County to see if the Showy Lady s Slipper (Cypripedium reginae) had come up. In the marshy area there was evidence of an early spring prescribed burn to begin to eradicate the invasive autumn olive which had taken over where there had been native grasses and wildflowers including C. reginae. There are a few stands of reginae left. Near by in the Barry State Game Area we saw garlic mustard thoroughly covering the forest floor as viewed from the road. Not only does garlic mustard crowd out other herbaceous plants on the forest floor, it releases toxins that kill beneficial mychorrhizal fungi in the soil. These fungi are essential to the growth of trees as well as the herbaceous plants on the forest floor. Want to help with invasive species removal? Go to the Wild Ones web site or check with MSU Extension Service. Annually GLOS makes a donation to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in Michigan which helps them in their conservation work. Here are some news clips from the TNC Spring 2007 report: 2006 saw a successful finish to TNC s Michigan Campaign for Conservation. Through continuing work ahead TNC will focus on managing and abating the top four killer threats to biodiversity in Michigan: invasive species, incompatible water use, fire suppression and climate change. These are also threats to our native terrestrial orchids. Want to help The Nature Conservancy on a personal level? Although this fiscal year ending June 30 th is not yet over at this writing, it is clear that we are wrapping up the second money-losing year in a row (see elsewhere in this newsletter the Financial Report Covering Period from 6/01/ /12/2007). This almost annual report shows a net loss for the year of $ The previous fiscal year had a net loss of approximately $1, (income: $8,468.20; expenses: $9,943.34). If one were seeking some good news in this scenario, one notices that our loss is less this year! The Society s Bylaws calls for a Finance Committee which has the responsibility of drawing up the budget for the Society. This year s Finance Committee is comprised of Treasurer Doris Asher (Chair), President Pete Porciello, and a member in good standing who has not served as a voting Board member for the previous twelve months. Angie Kremer, former GLOS Treasurer, is filling that slot. We are obliged to present a draft budget for the upcoming year to the August 21 st Board meeting. The Committee, and the Society Board, welcomes input from members on: 1. ways to reduce our expenses, 2. ways to boost our income, and 3. any other general thoughts on our finances. After all, this money is an asset (and the responsibility) of all of us. Doris Asher, Treasurer

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 by President Bill Cadman. Doris Asher made several corrections to the minutes and they were approved as corrected. Treasurer s Report Doris Asher reported that the income from our show was $ The balance on hand on April 14, 2007 was $12, The net income from the GLOS orchid classes was $ The report was approved. GLOS CALENDAR: April Mid-America show in Chicago May 5-6 Show in Ft. Wayne, IN. May 12 GLOS meeting. Peter Croezen will give the Phrag Kovachii Story. May Great Lakes Judging Center has their annual seminar. The Vandaceou8s Alliance is the topic. May Northwestern Michigan Orchid Society will hole their show in Traverse City. Marilyn Lee will set up and take down the display. Orchids will be collected at her house on May 23 from 3:00 9:00. June 19 The GLOS Board meeting will be held at the home of Doris Asher at 7:00. July 15 The GLOS picnic will be held at Wonch Park. Don Garling will try to get that date or an alternative Sunday. OLD BUSINESS: World Orchid Congress Doris Asher had proposed a donation to the World Orchid Congress previously and it was tabled until after the GLOS Show. It was decided not to donate to the Congress. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Membership Committee Marilyn Lee reported that we had several new members who joined at the Show. Conservation Committee Marilyn Lee reported that she and Sandra Simmons were taking care of the orchid gardens at the Fenner and Harris Centers. About 500 children stroll through the gardens. The literature on orchids has been very helpful. Protective fencing is needed for the orchid gardens. The Conservation Study Group will be involved in orchid salvage. MDOT has notified the group that some orchids will be available in the Upper Peninsula. Only 15 people will be allowed to salvage them. More details will follow. Peter made the motion and Dot seconded it to donate $100 to the Michigan Nature Association and $100 to the Nature Conservancy. Motion passed. NEW BUSINESS: Don made a motion and Kris seconded it to provide an orchid and membership to GLOS for the WKAR auction. Motion failed. GLOS is having its 30th anniversary on the day of our meeting. Doris Asher is providing an anniversary cake. Pete Porciello discussed having associate members pay more than regular members. Tabled for another meeting. SHOW WRAP-UP: Art Carol Stuht recommended that we have more space for the art display or limit the number. All went well as far as the judging and exhibits. Publicity The show was well advertised on television and radio. No newspaper ads were taken out because of the cost. Several people mentioned they heard it on the radio, so both should be used next year. Volunteers All went well and there seemed to be enough volunteers according to Jerrie Nichols. AOS Judging Don Garling said everything was fine and there were enough clerks. Classes A lot of people attended the classes and more chairs had to be brought in. Lynn O Shaughnessy divided some of her orchids, sold them to the audience and donated the money to GLOS. There should be another class on Saturday, if possible. Mike Underwood did a great job of announcing the classes and rotating the speakers. The signs announcing the topic and time also helped. Corsages Renate De Zacks assembled about 50 corsages. Three of them went to the anchors of the television stations. Next year maybe only 30 corsages will be made. Staging Don Garling said all went well. Similar spots were used with the same general floor plan as last year. Vendors All the tables were sold and the vendors seemed happy and wanted to come back the following year. Information Table Gus Kienitz did a great job with the info table and signed up several new members. Fliers Dot did an excellent job. Exhibit Peter Ostlund did a great job with the exhibit. It was a three-way tie for the AOS trophy and GLOS lost. It was well organized and there were enough people to put it together. It was very reasonable as far as cost of the exhibit. Hospitality Kris said everything went smoothly. There were donations of food as well as money to purchase what was needed. Clerking Doris said all went smoothly. Registration It went well and there were enough people. Trophies All the trophies were sponsored by GLOS members, so no additional cost to GLOS. Signage Bill did the signs and also put them outside. The schedule of classes was helpful. Orchids in use Marilyn said there were commercial as well as amateur exhibits. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15.

10 CONSERVATION COMMITTEE NEWS: Orchid Rescue Report June 21, 2007 Conservation-Cooperation, Coordination and Collaboration - Marilyn J. Lee Page 10 A lot of excitement can occur when we hear the words orchid rescue. GLOS members had an opportunity this Spring to be involved when MDOT notified Vice President Pete Porciello that the Showy Lady s Slipper, Cypripedium reginae, apparently was in the path of construction along a stretch of I 75 in Chippewa County in the U.P. Work on the road was scheduled for sometime in early May. C. reginae is not an endangered nor threatened plant in Michigan but it is given some degree of protection under P.A. 451 of 1994 along with many other wildflowers. GLOS members who attended a terrestrial orchid study group meeting April 7 were informed about the possible salvage operation and expressed a desire to help. Many questions had to be answered prior to the removal of plants from the construction site such as the number of cypripediums in the area as well as their specific location. Once located and removed where should they be relocated? What consideration should be given to post-transplant care and follow-up? What about other possibly protected plants in the same area? These were only a few of the issues that needed to be addressed. Under the leadership of President Bill Cadman, Orchid Rescue Guidelines were drafted by Bill, Pete Porciello, Vice President, and Marilyn Lee, Chairperson, Conservation Committee. These guidelines were sent to the GLOS Board for input and approval. The Guidelines provided an overall framework for this first attempt at orchid rescue. Pete suggested contact with botanists, experts and managers from the State s major conservation organizations. Relocation sites and post-transplant monitors were identified. This work was greatly facilitated by Marilyn s membership in multiple organizations whose primary goal is preservation and conservation of our natural resources.* The U.P. MDOT representative requested an on-site meeting for May 11 with the GLOS coordinator prior to the salvage operation. Marilyn Lee and Carol Stuht were able to attend. At this time cypripedium stands were identified and flagged for later removal. This meeting clearly demonstrated the complexities, uncertainties and danger involved in major road construction projects.** The date for removal of the plants was set for May 15, Participating in the actual dig were GLOS members Bill Cadman, Jim Heilig, Barbara Jones, John and Carol Stuht, and Marilyn Lee. Factors that were considered for relocation were the Guidelines referred to above, the number of plants available, who was available to do the transfer and post planting follow-up. John and Carol have U.P. contacts and transferred plants to a Luce County Preserve; Barbara transferred plants to affiliates of Little Traverse Conservancy in Emmett County just below the Bridge; Marilyn transferred plants to the manager of a large MI Audubon sanctuary, Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary, in Jackson County and to our two demonstration orchid beds in Ingham County as well as one clump to Scott Garden in Lansing. Barbara who has a second home in Harbor Springs assisted with the plantings in the Harbor Spring Area, Thorne Swift Preserve and Harbor Cove. Barbara is certified by the Wild Life Foundation to identify areas to keep natural. Joanne Foy who volunteers at Fenner Nature Center, helped prepare the area for orchids and planted some of the orchids. Jean Fierke helped put the cypripediums in at Harris Nature Center and Dot Barnett helped complete two beds at Fenner. Cypripedium reginae will need close observation and maintenance for at least the first two years. Long term follow-up is planned. A BIG problem in Lower Michigan for the cypripediums as well as for numerous other wild flowers are deer. Deer at Fenner have almost completely eliminated the trillium there. Time and resources did not allow us to put up the structural barrier needed to protect the orchid bed. Marilyn is making many trips to spray the orchids with cayenne pepper spray which is quite successful but it must be applied immediately after a rain. Unfortunately already the deer have done considerable damage to one stand at Fenner. So far, frequent applications of cayenne have kept the deer off the orchids at Harris. The plants are growing and flowered at Harris, most with two flowers to a stem. Scott Garden in Lansing does not have a deer problem. The garden is open at all times during the year to be enjoyed by the public. The one stand of C. reginae blossomed for this season. It should be mentioned that not all of the cypripediums that were collected are C. reginae. Different foliage indicated a second cypripedium present and it turned out to be C. calceolus var. parvifolium. These were planted and flowered at Fenner. A more permanent protection plan will need to be put in place at our local nature centers. Also, signage must be developed. *Orchid societies such as GLOS can play an important complementary role. **I want to acknowledge and thank MDOT staff for the advice, time and attention given for this orchid salvage operation.
