1 Crossroads PROCLAIMING THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST IN WORD AND DEED Somerset Church of the Brethren From the Pastor s Desk May, the month of days beginning with M. MAY DAY MOTHER S DAY MEMORIAL DAY The month of May entered the English language from the Old French a long time ago. Sadly, we lost the Old English word for the fifth month of the year: þrimilce. It literally meant three milkings because it was the only month of the year when cows could be milked three times per day. Another M to add to our list. Times have changed in many ways including the way farmer s milk cows today. However, the one never changing is God, and the one able to make changes within us is Jesus Christ His Son. The month of May also includes Youth Sunday. I am blessed to serve in a Church that has so many talented, energetic, and creative youth. I thank their teachers and the leaders of the Church for being encouragers and supporters of the efforts that are being shown. We also thank the Mothers among us for their love and patience and for being there when called upon. And we remember those that have served and are serving in the Military. We thank you all for your sacrifices. God bless and keep you all.pastor Martha INSIDE THIS ISSUE Activity Page Camp Harmony Activities Chorale Concert Graduation Sunday Kids CONNECT Mother-Daughter Banquet National Day of Prayer Nurse s Notes Sunday School Outreach 2nd Bob & Martha Beach 15 th Doug & Linda Lincoln 25 th Dave & Julie Stanton 28 th Terry & Kathie Shaffer Adam & Jessica Heflin 30 th John & Holly Shadle

4 SOMERSET CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN PAGE 4 THE LAWS OF A GODLY MOTHER [The writer of Proverbs says, Forsake not the law of your mother. ] I recall some of the unique laws of my mother The first I call the law of the warm kitchen. It seemed when I got home from school, the kitchen was always so warm from baking and cooking that the windows were steamed. It was also warm with a mother s love. A second (law) was the law of a mother s perspective. When I d come to her all upset over some childish matter, she d say, Ten years from now you ll have forgotten all about it. But above all was Mother s law of faith. Like Lois and Eunice in 2 Timothy 1:5, she had an unswerving trust in God that kept her strong and gentle amid the fears, pressures and sacrifices of the war years and of the 1950 s. -David C. Egner Nurse s Notes From the desk of Vickie Watkins, RN, MSN April 5, 2017 Hello Church Family, I hope this letter finds each and every one of you doing well. The long cold (well really, not so cold) winter is drawing to a close and spring is here. Or so the calendar is telling us. The weather is still a bit tricky here in good old Somerset County, to which we all can attest. Where else but here can you go through three changes of clothes in a day s time depending on the weather? Where else can you wake up in the morning and need a short sleeve shirt and jeans only to find at lunchtime you can pop on shorts, tee shirt and flop flops, and come dinnertime need your jeans, sweater, winter jacket and snow boots okay, I may be exaggerating a little, but only a little mind you. For those of you who are new to our wonderful Congregation or are unfamiliar with me, allow me to introduce myself, my name is Vickie Watkins and I am the Faith Community Nurse or Parish Nurse here at our Church, my office, which I share with the Children and Sunday Directors, is located in the Educational Wing just inside the double doors that lead to the parking lot. It is the second door to the right as you enter through the double doors from outside. Feel free to stop in anytime that I am here to say Hi. Having said that, it is with great pleasure that I announce to all of you that we will have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) centrally located here at our Church. Many, many thanks to the Church Board for so graciously agreeing to and supporting this endeavor both financially, with assistance from generous parishioners, as well as with overwhelming affirmation.
5 SOMERSET CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN PAGE 5 (NURSE S NOTES CON D) The above information leads me into the next topic of discussion; it is truly a pleasure to be offering Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) classes here at our Church. The curriculum will be from the American Heart Association and will be taught by a certified instructor provided by Somerset Hospital in conjunction with Penn State Fayette. More information will follow as I am still working to firm up dates, times, age ranges, etc. I am hoping to set the dates for sometime in June. I will have a signup sheet in the gathering area to see who would be interested in attending. I also want to encourage the children and the youth of our Church to attend. I know there are age limits with regards to the children who can actually participate in the classes, however I would like them to know where the AED is and how to get it if someone should request that, they run for the AED. I think that it is important in an emergency situation that they know where it is or can lead someone to it. I will certainly let that up to the parents discretion, though. I plan on offering a few different programs over the upcoming months and would ask that if there is something that peaks your interest or you would like more information either privately or feel something may benefit our Church family please do not hesitate to come find me so we can chat about it. I am always reachable on my cell phone; my number is (814) Also, remember I have office hours the first Wednesday of the month from 5pm-7pm and also by appointment, just call (814) In His Love, Vickie Watkins, RN, MSN YOUTH BIBLE STUDY A youth Bible Study for youth in Jr./Sr. High has begun on Wednesdays at 6:30pm in the youth room. We are going to aim for biweekly meetings.
