1 THE CHURCH VOICE Vol. 30 October 2018 Number 10 from me to you Dear friends in Christ, Sometimes the usual turns into the unusual. But I believe God is in the midst of all the turnings. For us, September 2018 will forever be connected with Hurricane Florence. There s something about September and F named storms. When I served First Presbyterian in Smithfield we were visited by Fran in 1996 and Floyd in The usual for me is to try and take Thursday as my day off. And on the 2nd Wed. night of each month Margaret and I travel to Guilford County so we can spend the next day with Aunts and Uncles, leaving in time to get Margaret back for Choir Practice. So we traveled to Greensboro on Sept. 12 but there was no retuning to Brunswick Co. on the 13th or 14th, no Church on Sunday. We finally got back home after many detours in SC on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The usual became the unusual but we were blessed to spend those stormy nights with Margaret s brother and his son who had evacuated to Pleasant Garden from Carolina Beach. How did you spend that unusual week in September? I would be honored to listen to your Florence story as we thank God for watching over all of us and the many miles we travelled. Please remember October starts on a Monday, so Tuesday, Oct. 2 will be the time for our New Member Pig-Pickin. Come out and enjoy a wonderful dinner for just $5 as we welcome those who have joined our church in the past year. And before we know it, November will be here with the annual CROP Walk and Consecration Sunday may the usual always be blessed with our Loving God s unusual Grace. In God s Grace,

Tuesday, Oct. 2 If you would like to volunteer in any capacity, please contact Bill Johnston at Meals-On-Wheels are in desperate need of Volunteer drivers to deliver meals to home-bound seniors in Shallotte. It only takes once a week or even on a substitute basis for 2 hours to make a huge difference in someone s day. If you d like to help, please contact Sarah Powell, Volunteer Coordinator for Brunswick Senior Resources (910) ext 1022.

4 Operation Christmas Child, the World s largest Christmas project, brings joy to needy children around the world through gift-filled shoeboxes. Since 1993 more than 100 million shoe boxes have been delivered to children in more than 130 countries. It s easy to participate. Pack a shoe box (you may wrap your own or we will have premade boxes in the narthex) with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies for a boy or girl ages 2-4, 5-9, or Bring your box to church by Sunday, November 18th, 2018 (please include $9.00 in your box or you may donate online and track where your box goes) Call Laura Thompson or Mike & Susan Clawson with any questions. Your simple gift can make an eternal difference in the life of a child. The church fellowship hall will be a county collection site. Please contact Mike & Susan Clawson or the church office if you would like to volunteer some time to help with collection. 6 Shallotte Presbyterian Church Beach Ministry 2018 Another summer has come and gone and once again we were blessed with good weather and large crowds to hold our 8:30 AM worship service on Ocean Isle Beach. What a beautiful sanctuary in which to worship God and enjoy His beautiful creation and hear His word. I would like to personally thank all of our Beach Ministry volunteers for their dedication and efforts because without their willingness to come early each Sunday morning the worship services would not be possible. A big thank you to Pastor John Causey for his inspiring messages also Joyce Winkler for her children s messages and those who added much to our services with their singing and dancing ability. We need additional volunteers, with strong backs, to help with the setup and cleanup (sound equipment, cross, tables, collection boxes, etc.) of the beach service. If you are interested in becoming involved next season please contact Pastor John or me. We look forward to continuing this wonderful tradition and outreach next summer. What an inspiring way to spread the Word of God than in a sanctuary of His creation. Again, thanks to our entire Beach Ministry Committee and our pastor for their service. Arrangements for inurnment or memorialization can be made through the Shallotte Presbyterian Church office at any time. When possible, arrangements for the reservation of niches should be made well in advance of need in order that decisions can be rational without a sense of urgency. You may also see Betsy Braddock or any member of the Columbarium and Memorial Garden Committee. Niches are available for one or two sets of cremated remains. Community Counseling Center 4910 Wrightsville Avenue Wilmington, NC / Satellite Office: Shallotte Presbyterian Church CENTERPOINT We all know that being over-committed and over-involved in managing jobs, households, schools, family, activities, clubs, and church, can cause stress, anxiety, and feelings of resentment. So why is it that smart, self-aware people like ourselves, continue to say yes to too many requests of our time and energy. If you re like me, it s because we care. We care about other people. We care about what we are involved in. We want to see it go well. We want to work to make things better. We feel a sense of obligation and a sense of duty that only grows stronger when we see others working hard. And many times, these duties can be enjoyable! Yes is often our default answer, unless we can come up with a good reason to say no. However, suddenly the scales can tip and we feel tired, overwhelmed, and resentful of these duties. Pay attention to the resentment! Don t feel guilty for feeling it and simply ignore it. Don t pass along your resentment and guilt to others for not doing their share and over-obligating themselves as you are. The resentment is there for a reason. It s our first clue, our first red flag that our lives are unbalanced. And here s the kicker! It s not anyone else s fault but our own that we are too busy. Our resentment is the first indicator that we need to set limits and say no. It is our responsibility to say no, to manage our time and well-being. It is not the responsibility of others to know better than to ask us. Rather than learning rules for how to say no, we should learn rules for how to say yes. No should be our default response, so that when we do say yes, it is with intentionality and a well thought out sense of our call to serve. Here are some things to consider when saying yes : 1). Are you already feeling over-obligated? 2). Do you have the time, energy, and desire to do (or learn to do) this job well. 3). Does the task match well with your values and God-given gifts? 4). Will you be neglecting another area of your life if you say yes? If so, is this ok with you and those it will affect?
