1 The Rosette Newsletter of the Tennessee Society Order of Confederate Rose ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Fall Edition ~ October 2014 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the President s Desk It s hard to believe fall is here where on earth did summer go? It s been a fun summer in the South however! Several members from 5 of our Tennessee chapters went to Charleston, SC for the Confederation of States meeting. I was so happy to be traveling with Jan Hensley, former TNSOCR president been a long time since she and I had an adventure. It was a WONDERFUL event, there s so much to see and do there. And to add to our delights, I along with the 3 other members of the original logo committee were given appreciation certificates from the SC OCR for our work on that. The biggest news for TN are also FIRSTS for TN. For the FIRST time ever the Confederation chose a Tennessean as Black Rose of Year!! Debria Beatey - she worked so hard on all the Sam Davis events and most definitely deserved this award. Another FIRST for TN was Debutante entries, and not just one but two! Emily Puckett and Amanda Forbes both beautiful young Roses from Chapter #6. And TN took second place in the scrapbook compition, again thanks to the hard work and dedication of Debria Beatey. Challenge on again with NC! (The rules for next year s compition will be sent ASAP next year there will be 2 classes, state and chapter scrapbooks. Of course it s not required but if any chapter has a craftsy scrapbooker member this will be a great opportunity to show-off your skills. If your chapter has a scrapbook but not planning to attend any one of us going will be honored to carry yours for you. ) Next year - Richmond!! Debria Beatey #6 and I represented TNSOCR at the Smoky Mountain Military and Relic Show. We had a great time at the convention center and out on the town. Jackie Dennison #11 and I were in the fashion show sponsored by Knoxville s Abner Baker UDC Chapter, Darlene Hammond. Pres. I was unable to attend the 150 th Funeral of OCR namesake Rose Greenhow in NC the 27 th, Jackie and Bill Dennison #11 went to Wilmington to represent Tennessee in the funeral several pix in this newsletter and many more on Facebook. Thank you Jackie and Bill ya ll did Tennessee proud! I am looking forward to a busy fall so many events are on the calendar. I hope many of you will be able to attend or participate this November 22, 1:00, the Rawley Bros. memorial at Mt. Olivet in Nashville. In humble service to the South, Vonda Dixon, TNSOCR President Our banner at the Smoky Mountain Relic Show Pigeon Forge. Fashion show and info table. It was a blast just ask Thelma or Louise

4 Roses of the Cumberlands #1, Crossville Supporting the Sgt. Wm. A. Hamby Camp #1750 Welcome to autumn and to our newest member, Genese Davis, mother and great-grandmother of Hamby Camp members Gregg Davis and Dakota Bolin. Joe and Ruby Pruett, Jerry and Carolyn Hedgecoth and Charles Ervin enjoyed the Highland Brigade Picnic on July 13th and the music jam on the lawn of Hamby Camp member Gregg Davis on July 19th. As always, Mike's bear meat was delicious! In cooperation with the Hamby Camp, Helen Holladay and Carolyn Hedgecoth participated in Pioneer Day in Crossville on September 13 th. Ruby Pruett was guest speaker at the Dillard-Judd Camp meeting on September 15th. Several OCR chapters were represented at the memorial service for 2 nd Sgt. James M. Green at Potter Cemetery in Warren Co. on September 18 th. Sgt. Green was the great-great-grandfather of Ruby Pruett who was instrumental in organizing the event. Thanks are extended to all who contributed to making this a memorable occasion. Sympathy is extended to Debbie Raymer in the recent passing of her sister. NOTICE: Everyone is invited and encouraged to hear Susan Frise Hathaway of the Virginia Flaggers speak at the Hamby Camp meeting on Thursday, October 16 th, 6:00 P.M. in the basement of First Christian Church, 111 E. 5 Jane Simmons Davis #6, Murfreesboro Supporting SCV Camp #33 Hello all! Well summer is gone a fall is upon us, the sad thing about that is old man winter is not far off. Our summer has been busy but not too busy; we have had some great times with some wonderful people. In July my chapter helped with the Ole Bedford black-eyed pea luncheon, had a booth at Uncle Dave Macon Days and many of us had a great time in Charleston at National Convention. Charleston gave us the opportunity to meet OCR ladies from other states; we enjoyed good fellowship with them at the national meeting. At the national meeting our OCR scrapbook won 2 nd place yay! I do wish I would have known that they were only going to judge the first 50 pages seeing how ours was 100 pages, we know the guidelines for next year and they better be ready! I was also absolutely blown away with the honor of being presented with the Black Rose of the Year Award, I was left speechless and for most of you that know me that doesn t happen often. I must thank Vonda Dixon for nominating me as always thanks Vonda for having so much faith in me and to the ladies who picked me for this award, that day and the award will always be a very special memory and honor. This year at national the Tennessee OCR also had their first ever debutants, Emily Puckett and Amanda Forbes; these young ladies are members of my chapter and I was so very proud of them. They represented the TN OCR with all the grace and beauty of true southern young ladies. It was kinda quiet in August except for my trip to Pigeon Forge to help Vonda with the OCR booth at the Smokey Mountain Relic Show. We had a great weekend and all I can say ladies is what happens in the mountains stays in the mountains!! When you end a weekend with the new nicknames of Thelma & Louise well I think that s enough said!! Lol September has also been very quiet for my chapter, but Lord knows I need the time, my daughter is getting married next October and she is in full blown wedding planning mode and running me crazy!! I was at a camp EC meeting with camp 33 this past week and the slow time will soon be over, we have some excited events coming up and I will send out an to all the presidents soon, I don t want to make this any longer than it already is. God bless and keep you all safe until we meet again. 6 Aunt Polly Eaton Williams Chapter #10, Gainesboro Supporting Gainesboro Invincibles #1685 This has been a busy summer! We began with 4 of our members participating in the dedication of a CW park in Red Boiling Springs and on the same day the Highland Brigade Forrest Picnic! Been to artillery school but never pulled the lanyard before! The convention was great and visits to the Hunley and Ft. Sumter will always be part of every southern heart. Violet and I were at Kings Chapel as part of the congregation for Time Capsule Ministries taping of CW sermons. I ve been so fortunate to do many Flags of the Confederacy presentations with the 19 th Ala. Civilians, at the Wilson Fair, Lairdland Farm House, Brick Church Cem. tour, and Buchanan Log House. Everyone s already heard about the fun we had in the mountains (but what happens in the mts.. if you want to know, join us next year!) but one of the fine points was spending time with Aunt Polly charter member Mike Davis. Debria and I did a quick tour of beautiful Cades Cove on the way home. We love Tunnel Hill and it s always more fun to share with friends OCR ladies from #5 camped with Violet and me down there. Betty and I laid the wreath at the grave of Sgt. James Green during the his memorial service. I m looking forward to all the events coming up. We voted a new meeting schedule with the camp we will be meeting with them, getting a meeting speaker, and cooking supper in the even months rather than every month, since we are often together other times for memorials, parades, and other events. In humble service to the South, Vonda Dixon, Pres. Violet, Mark, Cassie and Vonda in RBS First time to fire the cannon! Debria #6 visiting my flag display at the fair. At Fort Sumter with Jan Hensley #5 King s Chapel for CW sermons taping With Mike Davis #10 With the ladies from Chapter #5 at Tunnel Hill With the 19 th Ala. at the Brick Church Cem. and at Buchanan Log House. 7 Dibrell s White Roses #13, Sparta Supporting General George Dibrell Camp # 875 Our summer months in Sparta flew by fast and furious with everyone enjoying the constant round of regular summer activities. Our most wonderful event this summer was the July 12 th picnic and birthday celebration of Nathan Bedford Forrest at the home of Highland Brigade s Commander Mike Williams. Those attending from Dibrell s White Roses included Barbara Ray, Sue Savage, Lisa Howell, Anneston Savage, and Makayla Dickson. The day was full of fun activities from target practice with antique and present-day firearms to cannon shooting. I could not imagine going into battle with these cannons considering the time it took to load, fire, and re-load, not to mention the fervent prayers our ancestors must have prayed that they d hit their targets. The highlight of our meal included bear stew it was delicious, and Mike had it cooked to perfection! For those with less brave hearts, regular fare included hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the side items possible, as everyone attending brought their own fabulous recipes to add to the mix. Roses of the Cumberlands Chapter President Carolyn Hedgecoth brought a persimmon pudding that was out of this world good, to quote one of our members. Rosebud Makayla Dickson and her father had camped at Mike s the night before and helped Mike get everything ready for our enjoyment. We thank each and every area member for making this a truly memorable day for us as well as honoring General Nathan Bedford Forrest, his lifetime, and his service to the South. The camaraderie and fellowship was outstanding, and we look forward to next year s event. As temperatures cool and our beautiful Autumn rustles in, we re ready to start making plans to revive research on our many Civil War ancestors and their gravesites/homesteads, as well as future dedication ceremonies. We also in the following months hope to invite two guest speakers to our meetings: Kay Mitchell Muse, Dark Journey to a Ragged Dawn (which we missed at the Crossville Chapter s meeting); and Calvin Dickinson, Soldiers, Spys, & Spartans: Civil War Stories from Tennessee. Submitted by Nancy Tolbert Hambrick, President Page 7

8 Cynthia Holford Officer Chapter #18, Livingston Supporting General George G. Dibrell Camp # 875 The Cynthia Holford Officer Chapter #18 doesn't have much to report for the summer of As most of you know, I spent a great deal of time incarcerated in "Camp" Vanderbilt trying to shake a kidney infection that seems to not want to let go. So I didn't get to do much "fun" stuff. Due to being in the hospital July 12 thru July 16, I missed National Reunion in Charleston, which is my biggest regret, and our Brigade Picnic. I had surgery August 1st, and managed to stay out of Vandy long enough to see chapter member, Sue Pope's first persona impression of her gg-grandmother, Ada Hancock, who was a midwife in Overton County during the War Against Southern Independence, at the APEW #10 meeting August 5th. Then back to Vanderbilt I went on August 9th to stay until August 14th. So when I was "paroled" this last time, I stayed pretty close to home and behaved myself! The highlight has been the two memorials I attended Saturday, Sept. 20. The first was in Overton County in the Vaughn Cemetery for the ancestor of chapter member Sue Pope, Dr. Amos Hancock, 13th TN Cavalry, who coincidentally was the husband of her gg-grandma, the midwife Ada Hancock. It was a lovely memorial with beautiful weather. Then Thorn Larry Gunnels and I took off for Warren County to the memorial in Potter's Cemetery for the ancestor of Miss Ruby Pruitt, Roses of the Cumberland #1, James Green, 35th TN Infantry. It was a small family cemetery "off the beaten path" but a lovely setting for this memorial. I will be having major surgery on Oct. 10th at Vanderbilt, so the month of October will be a quiet one for me but I hope to be up and at 'em again by the holidays! Thank you to all who prayed for me and sent well wishes and cards, they are all very much appreciated! God bless Dixie and God Save the South! 10 Mariam Beck Forrest #5, Gleason Our members met on July 24 at a quaint little restaurant, Carriage House Mall Café, in Jackson for a meeting. We had Debbie Erickson, Charlotte Gray, Jan Hensley, Agnes McIntire, Margie Potts, Lou Shaw, and Maria Braun-Tabor attending. We discussed doing school programs, dedication for Maria and Jan's ancestors, and Margie Potts' Christmas dinner Sept. 4 found Debbie, Lou and Maria traveling to Middle Tennessee and spending the night at the Home for Wilted Roses (aka Vonda's house). The next morning we headed to Tunnel Hill, Ga for a sweat fest. We had a great time with Vonda and her faithful sidekick, Violet. As always we enjoyed the dance, met up with lots of old friends and made lots of new friends At the ball and Clisby House at Tunnel Hill, Georgia We traveled to Pilot's Knob, MO for the Battle of Fort Davidson on Oct 27, 28, and 29. We were over whelmed by the number of reenactors and spectators. They had over 30,000 people and 1,450 reenactors to attend. Saturday proved interesting maneuvering around a crowd that size and in and out of the sutlers tents. Saturday night they simulated the Yankees blowing up Ft. Davidson. Jan is planning a memorial service for her g-g-grandfather, John L. Griffin during the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of New Johnsonville at Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park. He was a Captain in Voorhies 48th Infantry and is buried in Wylie Cemetery at Waverly. If you plan to attend this event, contact her for an exact time and location for this ceremony. Submitted by Jan Hensley, Pres. (except the last photo but sharing that at newsletter time was very risky LOL) At Pilot Knob, Missouri ladies and soiiled doves Jan and Maria even smoke pipes! (Hmm another what goes on in Page 10 camp stays in camp scenario?!?!)

13 Instead of friends, I see in Washington only mortal enemies. Instead of loving the old flag of the stars and stripes, I see in it only the symbol of murder, plunder, oppression, and shame. There will be a onetime mascot competition to share at our next national in Richmond. No rules just create a mascot! Sounds like fun! Quote from the North Carolina Division SCV Newsletter * July-August 2014 edition The Division is proud of our Order of Confederate Rose Ladies for winning the award for most attendance beating even the host State of South Carolina with ladies present. On opening day the NCOCR Society was represented by Kelly A. Hinson as she gave the delegates a special message while portraying Mary Anna Jackson, Widow of famous Confederate General Thomas Stonewall Jackson. There are several camps enjoying the rewards of having the support of the ladies of the Order of Confederate Rose. If your camp does not have an OCR Chapter, you re missing many opportunities in your camp without their support. Page 13
