Sophie Reilly Hatton, Chapter #24, Lebanon We are very excited to report that one of our Charter Members, Robert Towson and his grandson, Steven Carney are direct descendants of our name sake, Sophie Reilly Hatton. Robert has been helping us with our research and has shared that he has some of Sophie's personal items like her Bible. We also found out that she was a member of the Methodist Churchand we can have access to their records of her time there. January 20, Tom and Dottie attended the Lee-Jackson Banquet in Columbia sponsored by the Cheairs Camp. January 26 we had our first fundraiser at the General Hatton Camp 723 Meeting. We auctioned off two Valentine baskets we made with items from Bath and Body. Thanks to the generosity of the men, we made about $180. Banquet at General Morgan Inn Martin Frost Speaking at Gallatin Camp Many of our members traveled to Greeneville, TN on February 3 for the Lee Jackson Banquet at the beautiful General Morgan Inn. The Vaughn's Brigade sponsored the banquet which, as always was a big success. Many of the ladies were dressed for the occasion which made it even more festive in such a beautiful setting. HK was there waving his flag and leading us in the singing of Dixie. Tom and Dottie attended two events the week of February 5th. They went to the McGavock Camp at Hermitage and heard a great presentation on Forrest and his genius tactics of the war. Then they went to the John R. Massey Camp meeting to hear Commander Patterson speak on how the war affected people of the region and what is going on today. Also Terry Twigg and Vonda Dixon attended the Gallatin meeting to listen to our brother, Martin Frost speak on General Hatton. Roses from a couple of chapters teamed up to work on fundraising projects. On two different occasions, February 18 and later on March 18, we ate together at Nancy Wood's house and the Roses worked on projects while the Thorns visited. We had guests both times. Great fun was had by all and some work got done each day! Tom Wood and Tom Meadows attended the AOT Education Conference in Athens, TN on February 24, and Nancy and Dottie explored the town of Athens, meeting up with Linda Boshers for a short visit. Great day! Dottie and Tom helped honor our ancestors on March 3, Flag Day. They were joined by many other active OCR and SCV members from across the state. Jordy and Kevin, our newest members, participated with their Brigade. Marty and Debbie visited the SCV Camp #2285, 4th TN Cav/2nd TN Mtn. Volunteers meeting in Gordonsville. Awesome fellowship with a great group of God-fearing patriots. On March 10th Tom, Dottie, and Nancy visited the Rockwood event where Dottie and Penny Waller sang for the participants. Flag Day Respectfully submitted, Nancy Wood, Secretary/Treasurer 3
Aunt Polly Eaton Williams Chapter #10, Gainesboro Busy time for sure! January is always our time to honor Lee and Jackson. I travelled to Lexington with Kevin and Jordy (#24) to participate in the memorials there. We visited VMI museum and our heroes burial places. Fri. was warm, then torrential rain, and then the temp. dropped to below freezing. And we are reminded of the hardships our ancestors faced. Dottie (#24) and I met at Sam Davis Home and composed the cover letter and flyer for the Women of the South monument proposed for the grounds of the new museum at Elm Springs. In February several went to the Vaughn s Brigade Banquet in Greeneville. I rode out with Tom and Dottie (#24) which is always FUN no matter what we do. Met up with many friends Tim, Caroline, and I (#10) from this chapter had a great time! Penny, Cassie, and I put on a Ladies Tea at the White House Asst. Living facility in Lafayette. We provided so many refreshments we had plenty to share with the nursing home across the road. I told about troops raised in Macon County and a little flag history. Cassie read the last letter her GGGGuncle wrote home before his death early in the War. Penny lent her beautiful voice and pianist ability leading period songs and hymns. March began at NBF Home in Chapel Hill. Penny, Susan K., Abby, and I proudly carried our battleflags at the Flag Rally. Susan R. carried her spinning wheel to teach at the Southern Women s Show in Cookeville. And the next weekend Susan K., Penny, Susan R., and I participated in the 150 th Rockwood Anniversary event with OCR and SCV members from many camps and chapters talking about history, flags, and our organizations. Penny, Susan K., and I then provided another Tea for the folks at S. Carthage Manor Apts. in Carthage, again teaching and entertaining the residents. We also regularly visit many other SCV/OCR meetings in the area. 7 meetings one month! 5 Society of the Black Rose Ann Shepard, Keeper of the Rite What is the history of the Order of the Black Rose? The first Society of the Black Rose started in 1998 in North Carolina. It was named in honor of the greatest widow of the Confederacy, Rose O'Neal Greenhow, who risked her personal safety for the Confederate Cause and lost her life during these efforts. What is the purpose of the Black Rose? The main goal of the organization is to organize a statewide network to assist in memorial services, cemetery and/or monument dedications to the Confederate soldier and/or cause, to educate men and ladies in the proper persona and to offer services or assist with services locally and statewide and services in other states by invitation. These members would help the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV hereafter) or anyone honoring a Confederate or a Confederate Memorial in the region. We are a volunteer order to perpetuate the persona of a War Between the States widow at SCV functions, memorial services, grave dedications, etc. This group is open to any current duespaying member of the Confederate Rose (no additional dues) and includes her family (husband and children). What are the requirements for membership in the Black Rose? You must be a member of the Order of Confederate Rose in your state. You must have a complete mourning outfit (period appropriate partial mourning is also acceptable). What does the Mourning dress during the middle 1800's consist of? Men wore black or dark colored suits to funerals and a black armband as a sign of respect for several months to a year. Men's daily lives changed very little and they were able to marry after the time of wearing the armband. The lives of women were changed and consisted of three stages. Deep/heavy mourning lasted one to 2 1/2 years. The clothes were black (often crepe), plain with bonnets and long black veils. Full mourning where the dresses were adorned in lighter shades of lace and cuffs (gray and lavender were common colors used here) and the veil length was shortened. Half mourning is the final stage of mourning and here the woman could wear dresses of other solid colors. Here again, gray and lavender shades were often worn. How can you join the Black Rose? Download and complete an application from our website. Send the completed application to the State Keeper of the Rite (including a check made out to NCOCR only if wanting the pin) who will forward the application and check to NCOCR. Ann R. 7 Susan McKissack Cheairs, Chapter #22. Spring Hill, Tennessee REUNION IN CHAPEL HILL IS ONLY A FEW WEEKS AWAY. Be sure to check the TNSOCR website for the registration form for the State Reunion to be held April 21 in Chapel Hill, TN. Chapter 22 will be hosting; we hope to see everyone there. Chapter 22 members have been planning, organizing, and arranging for the State Reunion. Our goal is to make this meeting an enjoyable and memorable one. December 29, 2017 Cailin McGlory, Rebecca Sowell, and Anita Safian toured Ferguson Hall with Mrs. Anita McIntyre as docent. A wonderful home and part of Tennessee and War Between the States era history, if you have the opportunity, tour this stately lady. Janet and Travis Roberts, along with Brian and Anita Safian, attended the Lee-Jackson Dinner, January 20, 2018, hosted by the Major Nathaniel F. Cheairs SCV Camp Guest speaker, Mr. Tom Price of the Maury County Archives presented information on the proposed removal of the graves of President and Mrs. James K. Polk from the grounds of the Tennessee State Capital to the Polk Home in Columbia. The evening at the Athenaeum Rectory was definitely an enjoyable one. Rebecca Sowell and Anita Safian removed and stored the Christmas decorations at Elm Springs. Thank you to Michael Landree for his assistance and support. Submitted by Anita Safian, president 7

Roses of the Cumberlands Chapter #1, Crossville "Our chapter has had an eventful quarter! After many years of wonderful service as our chapter president, Carolyn Hedgecoth stepped down. On Februaury 15, we elected a new president. I am pleased to serve in this office and look forward to all that is yet to come for our chapter. On March 3 rd, several attended the Rally at the Confederate/Union Monument in Crossville. On March the 10 th, our chapter, along with members from others around the area, attended the Rockwood 150 th anniversary event. We had a nice turnout and enjoyed the day meeting and sharing with lots of nice folks. We also got some pictures in the local paper. Submitted by Carol Phillips, president Confederate Flag Day at the CS/US Monument in Crossville OCR family in the 150 th Anniversary of Rockwood Event and in the newspaper report below. New member Sandy Kinnett, on left, receives her membership certificate from chapter president Carol Phillips at the March SCV/OCR meeting. 9
Highland Roses, Chapter #14, Cookeville We attended the Highland Brigade Lee-Jackson Banquet on January 29, 2018 held at the Overton County Fairgrounds. Greg Pryor was the speaker at this event and did an excellent job. Jim Loftis, the Commander of the Highland Brigade made the arrangements and provided excellent accommodations. Although it was a cold rainy evening, we were blessed by having several in attendance. Those in attendance were Bob and Sheryl Vick, Rico and Patty Carter, Jim and Karla McKinney, Michael and Glenda Williams and family members, and Ed and Pat Butler. We have had an eventful year. The Mechanized Cavalry has formed a new camp in Baxter, Tennessee. At this time they have not organized a new OCR Chapter. Therefore, some of the women will continue to be members of the Highland Roses Chapter. Mike Williams participated in the Siege of Bridgeport Reenactment in Alabama and the 150 th Anniversary event in the city of Rockwood. Greg Pryor will speak at the Dillard-Judd Camp meeting at Shoney s Restaurant on April 16, This is also the meeting for the Highland Roses. I hope to see all of you at the Tennessee Division 2018 Reunion at the Henry Horton State Park on April 20 &21. Submitted by Patricia Butler, President Mike marching in the Siege of Bridgeport and with Carolyn Hedgecoth and Frank Holladay, of Chapter #1, in the 150 th Anniversary of the city of Rockwood celebration. 10
Antoinette Polk, Chapter #20, Spring Hill Here we go starting a new year. We welcomed back Ashley Brumley who is now studying in the medical field. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Ms. Terry Kirby as a new member to our Chapter.. In February Beth and Terry attended the UDC meeting in Fly, TN. Kortney attended the Sam Davis camp meeting on February 22nd to hear Tom Meadows give a presentation at the meeting. On February 24th our chapter hosted the food and refreshments for the Mechanized Cavalry Officers annual meeting. We had a wonderful time working alongside the Mississippi OCR. This is also a time that our sister from Ohio, Sonja Ward, is able to join us for some fun. During that time Beth donated another period doll to the children s room at Elm Springs. Antoinette Polk also donated a check to Michael Landree for $ to the museum. On March 10th our chapter had a sewing day to create items for the chapter to sell at several upcoming events. We are happy to see the cold weather go away knowing that warmer weather brings more events. Our calendar is getting full and we are looking forward to being able to attend as many events as God will allow us! Looking forward to seeing everyone at the State Annual Meeting in April.
