The first stanza is rural and descritive, while the second focuses on abstract siritual matters and contains exlanation and analogy. The childʼs question is both naive and rofound. The question ( who made thee? ) is a simle one, and yet the child is also taing into the dee and timeless questions that all human beings have, about their own origins and the nature of creation. The oemʼs aostrohic form contributes to the effect of naiveté, since the situation of a child talking to an animal is a believable one, and not simly a literary contrivance. Yet by answering his own question, the child converts it into a rhetorical one, thus counteracting the initial sontaneous sense of the oem. The answer is resented as a uzzle or riddle, and even though it is an easy one childʼs lay this also contributes to an underlying sense of ironic knowingness or artifice in the oem. The childʼs answer, however, reveals his confidence in his simle Christian faith and his innocent accetance of its teachings. The lamb of course symbolizes Jesus - the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. (John 1:29) The traditional image of Jesus as a lamb underscores the Christian values of gentleness, meekness, and eace. The image of the child is also associated with Jesus: in the Gosel, Jesus dislays a secial solicitude for children, and the Bibleʼs deiction of Jesus in his childhood shows him as guileless and vulnerable. These are also the characteristics from which the child-seaker aroaches the ideas of nature and of God.
