2 Report of the Business Manager The year 2016 can be described in one word: change. That word, change, means different things to different people; some fear change, others embrace it. For Lake Springfield Baptist Camp, the changes that took place in 2016 represented growth and opportunity, along with a bit of nostalgia. CHANGE: BOARD One of the first and most significant changes to take place this past year was the retirement of Rev. James Harper. Rev. Harper had been President of the Lake Springfield Baptist Camp Board of Directors nearly since its inception. He guided the Board and staff through multiple building projects, through the creation of LSBC as an independent non-profit entity, and many other changes over the last six years. He was succeeded by Rev. Patrick Embley. CHANGE: ORGANIZATION Another change that took place in the Spring of 2016 had to do with the structure of staffing. For many years, Doug and Jennifer Brady had been co-managers, handling everything from ordering food to mowing grass. When Doug had to step away a couple of years ago due to other work commitments, Jennifer tried to maintain all aspects of the camp on her own. Early in 2016, it became evident that this had become too much for one person to handle. The Board re-aligned the staffing structure into 3 positions: Program Manager, Maintenance Manager and Business Manager. CHANGE: STAFF With the change to the organizational structure came changes to the staff. Maintenance Technician Roger Furkin resigned. David Holland was hired as Maintenance Manager. Kim Runkle was hired as Business Manager (later re-titled as Business and Marketing Manager) and Jennifer Brady was retained as Program Manager. CHANGE: STAFF (part 2) Just as the summer camping season was getting underway, we learned that Jennifer Brady would resign as Program Manager at the end of the 2016 camp season. She had been blessed with another opportunity more suited to her family s lifestyle at this time. CHANGE: MOVING FORWARD The more things change, the more they stay the same. Lake Springfield Baptist Camp remains the secluded, peaceful retreat many have come to know and love. There are several projects on the docket for the next few months; some general maintenance and some improvements, so that LSBC will continue to be a place that kids and adults alike will come to unplug from the world and be able to hear and feel the Living God. Blessings, Kim Runkle Business and Marketing Manager Board of Directors PRESIDENT Rev. Patrick Embley First Baptist Church Graymont, IL SECRETARY Rev. 5 Directors Give Their Thoughts on Camp The 4th - 6th grade camp took a look at several Parables. We looked at the stories Jesus taught and how they applied to our lives. We sang loud during worship times and learned that we can sing and dance to praise God. We had fun playing in the pool, boating and playing games on the field. We spent time in small groups where we were able to dissect the morning lesson, share things that were happening in our personal lives, and learn from others. Many of the campers left Friday morning ready to apply what they learned and eager to come back next summer. Kelsey Parrish, Director Senior High Camp is always a rewarding experience as you get to see the spiritual growth that has happened since the previous summer and the growth that takes place during the week. We had several first-time campers who experienced a sense of community that led them to share their testimonies with the camp as a whole. We had a camper who struggled with staying at camp the whole week and yet at the end shared how God was working in her life even though she was still struggling in her faith but more hopeful than when she arrived. One of the other joys of Sr. High Camp is watching the counseling staff, many of whom are former campers. They became very diligent at trying to find the answers when their campers ask them tough questions. They spent time looking through Scripture and talking with us "older" staff to be able to respond to a camper's searching. There is a real sense of "legacy building" at Sr. High as we see the leadership baton passed every year to a new leaders. I always leave camp with the feeling that the church and the Kingdom are in good hands. Rev. Kathy Hutchins, Director I directed a day camp. This was my second year doing that. I was lucky to have many seasoned counselors with me that could help guide me. We focused on the parable of the workers in the field and how our version of "that's not fair" lines up with God's vision for his children. I had one little girl in particular with special needs whose mom was a little concerned how she would handle the entire day, but she attached herself to me and stole a piece of my heart in the process. With these little ones you don't always see the dramatic conversion-type experience of say a senior high camper...but you do have the privilege of "planting a seed". It might be a seed of belief in God or just a seed of love for church camp, but either way its exciting to be a part of the journey. Debbie Kershaw, Director This was my 5th summer directing camp, and it was very similar to years past. We had around 80 kids in grades 2-5. My favorite part of camp is seeing the counselors develop relationships with campers and the bonds that are developed within the cabin groups. There were many instances the last day of camp when I would overhear a student say "I'm going to miss you so much!" to their counselor, or "She's my new best friend!" about one of the kids in their cabin. Relationships are such an important part of the camping experience, so I love seeing those develop even in the three short days that we are at camp. Some of the fun things that we did at camp this year were a photo scavenger hunt, night swims, the traditional counselor hunt, and some late night cabin parties. Spiritually, we talked about Faith, Hope and Love, and how the parables in the Bible displayed those, but also how Jesus' love on the cross was the perfect example of each. We had several students who experienced spiritual growth, and our small group time led to some good conversations about who Jesus is and how important it is to have a relationship with Him. Bethany Russell, Director At 1st-4th grade camp we studied the Parables of Jesus. We spent time in our cabins studying the different parables in a small group. During chapels we sang and danced to worship music. We loved swimming in the pool and taking our turns out on the boats. We played games on the field and did crafts. Many of the campers left Wednesday morning excited about their camp experience and the new friends they made. We believe that for many of the campers this is the age group that will decide their camping experience for the rest of their lives. We tried our best to give them a positive experience. Kelsey Parrish, Director

7 Looking Ahead to 2017 RESIDENT (ON-SITE) MANAGER UPDATED MARCH 1: Rev. John and Kelsey Parrish have been named as the new resident managers of Lake Springfield Baptist Camp. John is currently pastoring at First Baptist Church of Virden, Illinois, and will continue in that role, as well as assuming some of the managerial duties of the camp. Kelsey is currently a wife, mother, and active church volunteer. They and their three daughters will be moving into the manager s house at LSBC by the end of March. Their new address is: lsbcmanagers@gmail.com. SUMMER STAFF We are beginning the process of hiring summer staff. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and have a valid driver s license. We are looking for kitchen staff, maintenance/custodial staff, and lifeguards. A kitchen manager is also needed; that person must be at least 18 years of age and possess or be able to obtain a State of Illinois Food Service Manager s license. Lifeguards must be Red Cross certified. Most summer staff positions are livein which means that in addition to a cash salary, lodging and meals are provided (except on days off). Anyone interested in applying for a summer staff position should fill out the application on our website, or contact John or Kelsey Parrish. CAMP DIRECTORS UPDATED MARCH 1: LSBC is fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers to lead camp every summer. Even so, we still have one camps that needs directors. If you can volunteer to lead junior high #1 from June 11-17, please contact John or Kelsey Parrish. HONEYSUCKLE ERADICATION An invasive Honeysuckle plant has nearly taken over our wooded areas. This particular type of plant grows near the bases of trees, choking off the tree roots and causing the trees to die. This, in turn, causes a hazard as the tree limbs (or whole trees) start to fall. For the safety of our campers and our cabins, the eradication of this weed will take center stage this spring. We will need all hands on deck for a few Saturdays and would appreciate additional weekday help, as well. Please contact Maintenance Manager David Holland if you or your church or group can volunteer for this project. MANAGER S HOUSE When the manager s house was vacated late last summer, it gave the Board an opportunity to inspect the interior and make some changes. In January 2017, painting and carpet installation is taking place. Other repairs and hardwood floor installation will follow. As the final piece to this project, the Board voted in early January to rename the structure the Starks Family Memorial House, in honor of Pete and Jacob Starks of Graymont, Illinois, whose family made a generous donation to the camp in their memory. Lake Springfield Baptist Camp Mailing address: PO Box 556, Chatham, IL Physical address: 5878 Iron Bridge Rd, Chatham, IL Camp Phone: ! 2017 FUNDRAISING DINNER The annual spring fundraising dinner is a major source of income for the camp each year. In 2016, about 15% of LSBC s total income was generated at the fundraising dinner. This year s dinner will be held at Cherry Hills Baptist Church on Saturday, April 29, at 12:00 noon. A catered meal and entertainment by 4 His Glory (Greenfield FBC) will be enjoyed by those in attendance. Table captains are needed for this event. The table captain s responsibility is to invite at least 8 people who can make a meaningful contribution to LSBC. Many times, table captains also bring donations from persons not able to attend. This event is vital to the continued success of LSBC. Anyone able to serve as a table captain should contact Kim Runkle by March 1. CAMP REGISTRATION Registration for 2017 camps is open on our website, lsbconline.com. For those churches that prefer their members to register the oldfashioned way, registration packets are available. Please call or Kim Runkle to have a packet sent to you. kim.at.lsbc.office@gmail.com or lsbconline@gmail.com SENIOR ADULT DAY Each year, LSBC holds a camp day for those more experienced campers. This is a great day to reconnect with old friends. Mark your calendar for July 27. Only $15 for breakfast, lunch, and program. MANAGER PHONE #S Kim Runkle David Holland John & Kelsey Parrish
