1 United A Church for Everyone! SEPTEMBER 2018 NEWSLETTTER
2 Did you hear about the social justice warriors who were strolling down the street? The fellow said to the woman: "I am going over to pick up my unemployment check, then I'll drop in at the university to see what's holding up my check for my federal education grant. After that I'll pick up our EBT cards. Meanwhile, you go over to the free clinic and check your tests, pick up my new glasses at the health center, then go to the Welfare Department and apply for an increase in our eligibility limit. Then I'll meet you at 5 o'clock at the Federal Building for the mass protest against this rotten Trump Establishment." No matter how much some people receive they are never quite able to see that their blessings come at someone else s expense. My Dad use to say Boy don t be always taken, cause it cost somebody or in other words There is no such thing as a free lunch. Our nation was founded upon Christian principles one of which is the Christian work ethic, to work to provide for you family and to have to give to those in need, so many have just abandon that thinking but instead of being grateful for what churches and government give to provide a living the simply yell for more. It is a spiritual problem. For we who know that every good and perfect Gift come from the Father (James 1:17) still after receiving from His hand thousands of uncounted blessing still gripe and complain and fuss about what we do not have. There is a legend about two angels who were sent to earth to gather up the prayers of men. One was to fill his huge basket with the petitions of mankind. The other was to gather in his huge basket their prayers of thanksgiving. Sometime later they went back to the Father's house. One had a basket heaped high, and running over, with the innumerable petitions of men. The other returned with a sad and heavy heart, for his basket was almost empty. The thanks of men were heard but rarely on earth, even though the angel had searched diligently. Are we any different than those social justice warriors who take and take only to protest because we do not have more? Do we look at our homes and families with loving gratitude, do we at each meal bow in thanksgiving, do we look at our clothing or cars no matter how old or out of date with reverent joy knowing there are many who have so much less? Or do we complain and moan because we do not have the latest version of I phone or this year s pickup is so much cooler? It is always a matter of perspective the command is given to us to be thankful David wrote: Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. Psalm 95:1-3 And Paul commanded: Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. Let us not forget the thanksgiving side of our prayers. Pastor Charlie 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' 4 "For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!'"
3 A Note from Terry Snyder Note: I had already planned on writing on this subject for the newsletter (at least unless I had another idea that would make me delay, or felt led for something else) when real life hit. At least part of the message was further reinforced to me prior to my writing it. I once wrote about a word that I heard from pastor and former Gospel artist, Gary McSpadden. He recounted about his mother being in a nursing home, and how she had knickknacks at home from all over the world, yet there she was in a wheelchair with two Wal-mart bags, that had everything she needed at the time. All of a sudden, her focus had shifted and the things that once held value to her, really didn t matter much anymore (if at all). During one of my many conversations with Chuck Dilsizian, he told me all of the things he would be doing if he could get out of bed. Laying in bed gave him much time to think and being limited in that way kept him from doing many things that he had taken for granted (perhaps) or things that he may not have even given thought to during his normal life. I know that when I was laid up with the blood clot, I had much the same reaction. I had plenty of time to think and thought of the things I should or could be doing. Also, my two close brushes with death (in quick succession), gave me a laser sharp focus. I was able to filter through all of the stuff that seemed important in favor of the things that seemed to be important (and maybe to some degree was) in favor of the things truly important (or at least more important). You have probably also heard of people who had life changing experiences and vowed to do better, live better, be better etc. You may have been one yourself. But, unfortunately a lot of the time there is no real, long-lasting change. I have heard of a man who kept smoking through many illnesses until finally major health and threat of death caused him to stop. I have heard of a man who drank and even after being released from jail, went back to drinking. God gives us the ability to make decisions and free will. Yes, some people seem to be able to make changes or stop bad habits by sheer force of will. But, usually real, lasting change comes from God. I can t even say that God doesn t give help to those who don t believe, but even if He doesn t, He made them, gives them breath and so forth, so no man can make it without God. You have probably also heard of people in your life (or friends lives) or at least in the media who made deathbed confessions of faith, and accepted Christ. Of course this is a dangerous risk to take as we are not guaranteed tomorrow and may not have the chance to get right before dying, but I believe God is faithful and just to accept those people. He did it with the thief on the cross who apparently also discovered what is important when faced with sudden death. But, I also wonder, if those people managed to get a miracle and were spared (or healed) on this earth (instead of the ultimate healing in Heaven with a new body), would continue to accept the gift and serve God, or would they go back to their old ways? I am sure God has the answer to that. I would like to say that my brushes with death made me always remember the important things since then, but I would be lying. But, although I had it in my mind to an extent (at least), the possible loss of mom I had on vacation further strengthened the message. I would also like to say that I will always remember and live with that in mind, but I will likely still get bogged down with lesser things at times. We humans still have the flesh to contend with and it is easy to lose focus. I am going to close with lyrics to a song that I had actually picked out (perhaps with a nudging from God?) as a praise song to be sung when I was gone, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace!

6 Happy Fall, East Columbus! I ve been collecting sayings for some time and I d like to share some of them with you. Some you may recognize others may be new hopefully one will inspire you to share the love of Jesus with someone else today Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart. To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart. Anger is only one letter short of danger. If someone betrays you once, it's his fault; if he betrays you twice, it's your fault. Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. God gives every bird its food, but He does not throw it into its nest. He who loses money, loses much; He who loses a friend, loses more; He who loses faith, loses all. Beautiful young people are acts of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art. Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself. The tongue weighs practically nothing, but so few people can hold it. Till next month share love and laughter with everyone you meet Till next month Timothy A Full-Time Sunday School Teacher is needed immediately for the (8 th - 12 th grade) Junior and Senior High Teens Class. This class meets upstairs in the Youth Room at 10:40am during the Sunday School Hour. Please contact Morris Percifield if you are interested.
