6 From our past President By the time you read this, another year, 2011 will have gone by the wayside and be but a memory. I would like to take this opportunity to revisit the past twelve months, at least as it pertains to this organization. We have come a long way, made a few changes, impacted a few lives, and had a great time doing it. It all started at our January General Meeting, with the installation of new officers. The Baton was passed to me, from Ron (actually it was a gavel), and it seemed as though 2011 just began for the CPAAA. When in actuality, it was just the beginning of my Presidency. I can t begin tell you what this year has meant to me; but I can say it was a lot of work and a whole lot of fun. It was such a pleasure to work side-by-side in the so called trenches with all of you, as we set out to improve and grow our organization. We hosted CPA Class 25, which was as much fun for some of us as it was for the students. Class 25 garnered some very fine additions to our ranks; which helped greatly with accomplishing our goals. We delivered flowers once again on Valentine s Day, which helped boost our coffers. Valentine s Day also saw us present our last Officer of the Quarter award to a deserving Investigator Eddie Ocanas; though it was from the 4 th Quarter of We also lost several of our beloved members this year. Charles Andreas passed March 25th, but the group didn t get the word until our April Meeting. That was in spite of the fact that we had established a New Committee at our March Meeting, The Benevolence Committee, for just that reason, so we would be informed about these things. Keeping its members informed should be one of an organization s top priorities. Well the Committee is working fine now and has kept us well informed and the news hasn t always been bad; it has informed us of great news too: like, Debbie Northrup s cancer being in remission, Millie Keller on the mend, Jean Winter s surgery being successful, etc. Thanks to Clyde, we have heard from and learned from some excellent speakers this year. Do you remember them and their messages? Julie Renken talked about the Judicial System here, Donna Damon enlightened us on the probation situation, Sgt. Mark Whidden talked of the Sheriff s Department, Steve Westbrook spoke about law enforcement in the State, Chief Phelps kept us updated on all things BPD related, and finally Assistant Chief Petrash came by for? Oh yes I remember, to thank us for the guns that we purchased for the department; and of course, for comic relief (he s so good at that). This year saw our organization help the Police Department with the purchase of a Traffic Trailer, which I am sure most of you have seen deployed throughout the City, gathering vital information for traffic studies that will impact many aspects of our daily commute. The group also purchased a new Glock hand gun for every Officer in the Department. This purchase was appreciated by every Officer that I spoke with, especially after their time at the shooting range. These purchases could not have been possible without the tireless efforts of this group to raise funds, through our various fundraisers throughout the year. Many thanks go to our fundraising Chairperson, Annette, whose efforts were recognized by our group as she was voted CPAAA Alumni of the Year. Our group also rallied to show patriotism and support by standing out in the rain to honor fallen hero Army Spc. Riley S. Spaulding when his procession took him thru Downtown Brenham on May 12 th. We had other occasions this year when we showed our patriotic side; National Night Out had a patriotic theme, the Veterans Day celebration at the American Legion Hall in Fireman s Park, and our Christmas Stroll Parade float also had a patriotic theme (I would say our group is patriotic throughout the year). We also supported our community by giving blood at our Guns and Hoses Blood Drives held quarterly throughout the year. We sure are a great group! This year was no different than in years past, two deserving young people got their college careers started with scholarships that we afforded them. The Officer Marsha Ellis Ullrich Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Brooke Hutson (I had the honor of presenting it to her). The William Kenneth Carnes Scholarship was presented at Blinn College. This was the Twentieth Year for our organization, and it was first thought that we would celebrate by having a 20 Year Reunion Picnic. I secured the Fireman s Training Center for the location of said party. But after much discussion, it was not to be; we settled on having our usual fun fest. It was not the usual, because it was indoors, climate controlled and bug free; it still felt like a picnic and everyone had a wonderful time (I hope we can get the FTC again next year). The CPAAA also observed National Communications Week and National Police Week; along with National Night Out. We also observed and participated in our Annual Halloween Candy Drive-Thru, and for the first time, we entered a Float in the Christmas Stroll Parade. We even managed to have fun at our Bake Sale and Sirloin Steak Drive-Thru fundraisers (what a group). We did some serious stuff too, it was not all fun and games (well mostly fun and games). We made some changes to our By- Laws this year. The City offered us free flu shots. We took a CPR Class that was open to all CPAAA members. We were honored to attend several funerals of members and Officers family members, including that of Robert Hickey. We hosted Ray Wilkinsons retirement party. The list of things that this organization accomplished or had a hand in is quite lengthy; and the above ramblings are all I could come up with for this, my last article as your President. I would like to thank all of you that showed your appreciation for all the work that I did for this organization by voting me your CPAAA Alumni of the Year. To be recognized by one s peers is the ultimate form of gratitude. It was a labor of love; and I enjoyed every minute (almost every minute), and would do it again if asked. I would like to conclude by reiterating how much of a pleasure and honor it was serving all of you in my capacity as President, and know that when I pass the Baton to Larry that you will show him the support that I have felt all year long. HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of YOU and to our GREAT ORGANIZATION. Rob Aguilar
