1 First Christian Church of Orange (Disciples of Christ) 1130 E. Walnut, Orange, CA s orange1st@fccorange.com s An Open and Affirming Congregation November 2014 From Dayna Every week in worship I get to hear one more reason to become a member of First Christian Church of Orange. I never cease to be amazed by the stories that are told and the lives that have been touched by this congregation. A couple of Sundays ago, Wendy Chieffo gave an invitation to membership that made me want to walk up front and join. I asked her if I could share her invitation because it is a great resource for sharing FCCO with others. Thanks, Wendy! Invitation To Discipleship Wendy Chieffo in Worship, October 12, 2014 I m still a relatively new member of First Christian Church of Orange so, for the Invitation to Discipleship, Joyce Miller suggested that I just share with you a little bit of my experience and tell you what this church means to me. Don t worry I ll give you the Cliffs Notes version, and my apologies in advance to anyone who has heard this story before. I was raised in a very strict, conservative faith tradition that I chose to leave in my mid 20's. Since I had a bad experience growing up, I decided that I didn t want anything to do with church or religion for the next 20 years. Thankfully, God was very patient with me for a couple of decades while I worked out all of my angst. A few years ago, I eventually started dipping my toes in the church waters again and, through a series of amazing coincidences, God opened my eyes and my heart to His way. I was baptized as a follower of Jesus Christ four years ago, and I ended up joining another local church here in Orange County. However, after a couple of years at this other church, I discovered that it also was very conservative and dogmatic, which just was not a good fit for me personally, and I began feeling that God was pulling me in a different direction. So, being the obsessive-compulsive person that I am, I decided to go on a quest to find the permanent church home where I felt God wanted me to be. I researched and made a comprehensive list of all of the progressive, open-minded churches in Orange County, and then I started visiting every single one a different church every Sunday for months and months and months. I really had an incredible time during this period. I met a lot of wonderful, kind, loving people, and I learned so much about all of the different ways that people relate to God and worship God. It really was an amazing experience! But in my research, I stumbled across this really strange denomination called the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which I think holds the Guinness World Record for the longest denomination name ever! I had never even heard of the Disciples of Christ before and, to be honest, at first I thought that the name sounded a little bit hinky! But as I was surfing the internet and learning what the Disciples are all about, I started to think, Wow, this is really cool! First of all, I learned that, in a Disciples church, no one will tell you what you have to believe. Instead, everyone is encouraged to study scripture for themselves and to use their brains as they seek God s will for their own lives. In fact, someone once told me that, if you get ten Disciples in a room, you ll end up with 11 different opinions. I think that s way cool! Next I learned that Disciples share communion every week and that everyone is welcome and invited to participate in this celebration of Christ s love and grace, no matter who they are or where they are on their spiritual journey. That s really cool!! Then I learned that Disciples have a real passion for social justice issues. They really believe in doing the best they can to follow the admonition of Jesus to love our neighbors, to care for those in need, and to work at making a real difference in this broken world. Again, super cool!! Finally, I learned that, although each Disciples congregation is different, First Christian Church of Orange has been officially open and affirming to the LGBT community for ten years, and every human be

2 Invitation to Discipleship continued ing is respected and welcomed into full fellowship and community, no matter who they are. I started to think that this all sounded too good to be true! So, while I was going through my year of church shopping and exploring, even though I was really excited to check out FCCO, I specifically waited and saved it for last because I just had a feeling that was where God was guiding my path. Sure enough, on my first visit to First Christian Church of Orange, I knew that I had found my home. There is a beautiful song by the band Kutless which begins with this invitation: All who are thirsty, all who are weak, just come to the fountain. Dip your heart in the stream of life. So that s my invitation to you today. If you re looking for a church home where you will have opportunities to learn and grow and serve, where it s really, really okay to question and to be different (I am Exhibit A!!), and where you will be loved and accepted completely, just the way you are, as a beloved child of God, then First Christian Church of Orange just might be the place for you also. If you are ready to come to the Fountain of Christ, and dip your heart in the stream of God s love, I invite you to just come up and greet Pastor Dayna and Pastor Michelle during the singing of our closing song, and you will be welcomed unconditionally into our church family. Maybe this is where God has been guiding your path as well, and all of us would love to join you on your journey! The Conversation Continues Journey Team Update On October 12 the Fireside Room was filled with lively conversation. In groups of four we shared personal stories and our ponderings about possible new/ renewed ministries at FCCO. We doodled and reported on poster board and concluded by asking each small group to come up with a few What if statements for FCCO based on our conversations. Very soon you have the opportunity to look over those poster boards and the resulting What if... statements. They will be posted at the church as well as electronically. If you would like to add a What if statement you will have that opportunity. You will then have an opportunity to indicate which ones you like. This information will be tallied, reviewed and readied to present to our 2015 leadership. Watch for updates from The Journey Team. Disciples Women Service Highlight Did you know?...i didn't know! (Well, not all of this story) This story begins In 1984.Some people, homeless we call them, were companions together at a city park, which had tables and benches for their gatherings to take place One day a woman met them at the park and found them to be without food, and especially she found that they had not had, " A HOT LUNCH!'". She told them to stay there, she would return with a hot meal, and a hot meal she did make at her home to deliver to her new friends at Hart Park on South Glassell. Today that process still exists A hot lunch at noon!!! This Angel had a name Mary McAnena, better known as Mary of MARY'S KITCHEN fame. MARY'S KITCHEN was at Hart Park on Glassell for 18 years. So, then at this point the City Of Orange along with Chapman University and several business people changed the arrangement for MARY' S KITCHEN. and it was moved to modular units in a year round housing facility on Orange City property on Struck Street where it functions successfully today. It is run totally by 100 volunteers. Women and men can daily go to MARY'S KITCHEN, and some do come there, not only to receive a hot lunch, but a healthy snack to take for an evening meal. And THE SHOWERS, oh yes HURRAH!...HOT SHOWERS!, for which Disciples Women have sent your small donated soaps for those nice hot showers. MARY'S KITCHEN has been in existence for 30 years total in it's two places. Mary has since died while working most of her 100 years. I do so hope MARY'S KITCHEN will be in existence for at least another 30 years. Update for Stephen Ministry The Stephen Ministry Leaders are training a group of 6 trainees this fall and next spring. Signups for dinner will begin soon in the courtyard. More Happenings Quilting Tidbits Say, all you Quilters! Quilting for October 11th has been rescheduled with a date of Saturday, November 1st. Here are the projects we will be working on. First: We have four baby blankets for our machine operators to work on. These laprobes are knitted and need a machine zigzag stitch around all four sides to give them a finished look. They will not need backing. Second: Pattern design, pressing and pinning are needed on four sets of finished squares. The squares need to be arranged into suitable laprobe patterns, then pinned and pressed. Take them to machine operators for stitching. Have Martha check them before moving on. Third: Four laprobes which have been started, but need serious pressing and to be marked for yarn ties. Backing may be needed. Next put in the yard ties of an appropriate color and these laprobes will be complete. Fourth: A batch of unsorted squares that need to be sorted into appropriate design groups, laid out into strips, pinned and pressed. Take the strips to machine operators for stitching. Then they go to the cutting board for a backing piece to be cut. Then pressed, and pinned and back to machine operators for stitching. Ask Martha if they need yarn ties. Fifth: We have a beautiful large quilt made by our own Martha Braun some years ago. It will be on display for us to view and admire. The only thing needed to complete this project is to mark the places for yarn ties, and put in the yard ties. This is a take home project for anyone who is interested. We really don t have space to work on it in the Fireside room. Choose your project and we can get going on some laprobes for a new year. Last year we made a total of 14. Perhaps we can match that number this year. Where did all these neat projects come from? From the inexhaustible storage closets of Martha Braun. Thank you, Martha, for your resourcefulness. See you at Quilting. Cheri Stevens Bucket Change Bucket Change for November will be distributed to the Adopt A Family program. This gives us the opportunity to help a needy family in the Friendly Center community receive much needed gifts for Christmas. As you depart worship each Sunday, please take note of the buckets provided at each exit to collect your spare change and cash. 10/29/2014 Church Life Page 5

6 Protecting your future Long Term Care Planning Options November 23 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. Why is this topic important to you and your family? For starters, the need for long term care can have devastating financial and personal consequences whether that care is for you, your spouse, a parent, grandparent or other family members. For those of us who think of long term care as something required only by older people, here are a couple of realities to keep in mind: Accidents can happen at any age, and illness can suddenly replace good health. 40% of those who currently need long term care services are under the age of 65. Think about the changes you would have to make if you or someone in your life were in an accident or diagnosed with a debilitating illness. Who would provide care? Who would pay for it? This last question is especially significant when we realize that the cost to provide care can easily exceed $100,000 a year - leaving your 401K and savings at risk. Learn more: Immediately following our service on November 23, you are invited to attend a short presentation in the Fireside Room to learn what long term care is and the options available to you. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for a personal consultation with Glenn Kroe, a Licensed Insurance Agent, who can meet with you, your spouse, and extended family members. Christmas Musical The 2014 Christmas Musical will take place at First Christian Church on Christmas Eve in the 5:30 p.m. service, when our youth and children will tell and sing of the Christmas story in a fresh new way. This year s story is titlted A Play in a Manger. Another opportunity to experience this musical will be during the open dress rehearsal taking place on Sunday, December 21, at 6:30 p.m.. Invite a friend or neighbor! Call for Set and Costume Designers & Behind-the-Scenes Gurus A great production involves a lot more than great singers and actors. If you are eager to help with some set design, costumes, or other off-stage assistance and support for the musical, please contact Pastor Michelle and/or Children s & Youth Choir Director David Ruby. Adults and youth welcome. More Happenings Friendly Center Thanksgiving Dinners During the months of November the Christian Action and Outreach Committee will be collecting foods to provide Thanksgiving dinners for families supported by the Friendly Center. Our church will provide dinner for 15 families, like we have done for the past several years. We also plan to provide dinner for those living in the half-way house across the street. Please bring canned or boxed food that can be used for Thanksgiving dinner to the church beginning the last Sunday November 2 through Sunday, November 23. The final day for donating food is November 23. Suggested boxed or canned items to bring: Stuffing Yams Gravy Cranberry Sauce Rice Potatoes Canned Fruits, including pie fillings We also welcome Smart & Final gift cards. Thank you for your generous support of this project to assist local Orange families. For questions please contact Hazel Stover. Sunday Night Together Restaurant Fundraiser Tuesday November 11 11:00 a.m. 9:00 p.m. Join us for a fundraiser at: Tutto Fresco 1333 N Glassell Orange, CA 20% of all participating sales will be donated back to Sunday Night Together. 7 Regional & General Church Happenings 2014 Thanksgiving Special Offering Support our students so they can Come Home to a Disciples of Christ Institution! Your gift to the Thanksgiving Offering helps underwrite the education of students attending our 14 member undergraduate institutions and our 7 seminaries or divinity houses. You are helping ensure that when students from your congregation go away to study they will Come Home to a Disciples institution. Coming home to a Disciples College or Theological School is possible through the scholarships and grants that are made available by generous individuals, the Disciples Mission Fund and your gifts to the Thanksgiving Offering. Together, we can make coming home to Disciples educational institutions more affordable. For generations thousands of students have attended the Colleges and Universities of the Christian Church receiving both a quality education and the opportunity to remain within our Disciple s heritage. The Thanksgiving Offering helps continue this tradition. Pet Blessng Redux Pacific Southwest Region Regional Assembly 2014 Review The Pacific Southwest Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) gathered in Garden Grove October for worship, workshops, and two items of business. FCCO was well represented at the assembly. Amanda Johnson was invited to share about our shoe collection and announced that FCCO collected 900 pairs of shoes. That is 36 bags and $360 for our Good Samaritan Fund. The two items of business, both unanimously approved by the assembly, have to do with people who are, or who have been, incarcerated. The first resolution calls the congregations of the Southwest Region to become a people who are equipped to extend grace and welcome to persons who are currently or previously incarcerated. Congregations are encouraged to study jail and prison issues, including but not limited to the War on Drugs and the disproportionate number of people of color who are incarcerated. The second resolution endorses Proposition 47 which will be on the November ballot. This proposition proposes a reduction of several nonviolent offenses from felonies to misdemeanors retroactively. The money saved by not incarcerating these individuals will be used for treatment, education, truancy, and mental health. The assembly commissioned, Paul Turner, to be a missionary in the Congo for four years. Our youth lifted our spirits with a Happy video. Our Co-Regional Ministers, Don Dewey and Susan Gonzales Dewey, also gave a State of the Church address celebrating the ministries of the Pacific Southwest Region. It was a great event! 10/29/2014 Church Life Page 7
